Gas prices Skyrocket

http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/2005/09/23/gas_panic_goodale20050923.html

pictured in this site is a Petro Canada in Quebec selling gas at 1.67 per litre. I filles up here in Manitoba at 99.9 cents this morning. rumours spreading are saying it could hit 2.40 in Ontario, a rise of 400% in about a year and a half.

This means the cost of everything will skyrocket, inflation is already at 2 year highs of 3.4% I expect that to rise to 4 maybe 4.5% if the prices don't come down. interest rates will rise due to inflation, which will raise the value of our dollar (running at a 13 year high), which will hurt the manufacturing sector, taxis will raise their price to at least double, maybe quadruple current prices, busses will go from 1.85 to probably 3$ or more. SUV sales will finaly fall.

my personal fuel use will rise from 4% of my net salary to about 10% (which will hurt the most ) the government is in no possition to do anything about the prices, and I seriously hope they don't reduce the taxes collected on fuel we need that money for infrastructure.

Were lookin at rough times ahead, at least europe had time to deal with this.

I wonder what diesel is going to rise to? maybe I'll buy a Golf TDI or something

EDIT: Conan brings up a good point. and I dont take the bus cause there is no bus that goes to my work, but I was looking at housing closer to work save me 10 minutes on a 15 minute ride there and 10 minutes on a 35 minute ride home

220.0(acording to Jebus)*3.75(3.75 litres per US gallon)*0.855 (exchange rate)

7.054 US dollars per US gallon

I find it funny that everyone runs out and fuels up when there is that type of warning...  Specialists have said that due to this, they run the possibility of a gas shortage in the area thus causing prices to go up again.

(i wouldn't be surprised if it's all a scam to get us thinking that 1.03 is a GOOD price by scarring us about the 2$/L.  think about it... we use to think .95 was high, so nobody gassed up... then they boosted up to 1.26, motivating people to gas at .99 (and actually thinking that THAT was cheap)..  now they're gonna boost it up to 2bucks, so of course, we all think that 1.25 is great!)

Im gonna build a wind power flying-auto-matrix.

funny, I just read the same CBC news article.

By the way, the gas was selling at 2,20 in Toronto... that's not a normal gas price and things like this fuels our fear. I couldn't beleive that we'd brake the 2,00$ mark.

For you americans, we are talking about cents/Litres.

Last year at this time gas was selling at 0,87.

You know what the worst part is, everyone complaining and then riding on the bus and seeing all those complainers sitting by themselves in their cars like idiots. If you still take your car to work, then you're not one to complain. This drives me insane, to see people wanting for the gas prices to go down, and saying it's ludicrous they are making so much money. Then they turn around and use their car to go to work and not even try to cut down on car usage. We are all responsible for this price elevation. The companies make money off of people who don't think before taking their car.

Another mystery of life, actually - human stupidity. All waiting to get to work in their cars jammed in traffic, using much more gas because they ain't moving. What idiots.

TOUCHé!!
(that means "touched?" for the english" and actually loses all it's meaning in the translation!!)

that's a darn gosh good point bud!  I gas up once a week and I don't tend to care about the prices at all!!

If OC transpo was smart, they'd drop the prices of bus passes and get their own ridership up! Only thing is they'd have to be a heck of alot more reliable.  But they don't care, they look like they're gonna strike next month!

Yeah, last nite I went out with the hubby at about 8:30 to pick up some food and every gas station we passed by was lined up like you can't imagine. We needed gas too, but it just didn't feel worth the wait...

What's funny is that we just bought a new (well not new new) car, and our old car is still sitting in the lot - it's quite likely that the value of the old car can be measured by how much gas is in that tank, lol.

Anyone out here who can explain syphoning to me?

Think about it for a moment...

I hope the price of gas skyrockets to about $5 per gallon here in the United States.  My theory is the following:

As gas prices increase, this reduces the number of poorer people on the highways, since they cannot afford to pay the higher cost.  From a socioeconomic perspective, an individual's level of education is somewhat relative to his or her level of income, meaning that higher educated people usually make more money than lower or uneducated people.  Therefore, there should be less poor people driving on the roads.  The rich (and more educated) will continue to drive, although some will carpool, etc. (who truly are the 'smart' ones).  This will reduce my chances of getting into an accident, because there will be less undereducated drivers on the road.  In addition, if I happen to get into an accident, this will lower my chances of getting into an accident with an uninsured motorist.

Of course, this entire theory is based on the presumption that educated people, on the whole, are better drivers than uneducated people.

Just my two cents.  Better yet, just my $3.04 per gallon (current price of gas where I live).

Actually, that was pretty funny Khayman, but in all seriousness, this should have another safety impact.

In the province where I live, there are plenty of hoodlums driving modified cars and the only way of pressing the gas pedal for them is flooring it.

This gas increase could have the effect of calming them down ... or at least making people drive a bit slower, accelerating slower and being thus more careful.

Khayman,
in my experience the most ignorant drivers are the one's driving the "higher end" cars...  some rich punk in a BMW driving like a maniac because he thinks he's entitled to it and that the world owes him...

the people around here that drive the ****boxes are not the ones driving like morons...
(so your theory would be better for the hwy esthetic more than anything else!!)

Here in New Zealand the prices are up to $1.52 NZD per litre of 91 unleaded. About a year or two ago they were at about 90 cents.

Firstly, I am glad about petrol pices going up. When buying and using petrol, people cause environmental damage which they don't pay anything for - it's not included in the price. There's an attitude that "I've paid money for it, now I can do what I want with it" and no concern for future implications of such usage.

New Zealand is backwards in environmental sense. Calling itself "clean green", there are NO vehicle emission regulations and air quality in Auckland is below international safety standards. There are oceans all around, so the wind can blow a lot of it away, but from far away, a brown cloud is distinctly visible above the city every sunny day.

You'd think that busses are the answer. But about half of the busses here makes so much black smoke, that according to the council, busses are responsible for as much Particle Matter emissions as ALL the petrol passenger cars of Auckland put together! Basically if every person on the bus drove alone in the car (except perhaps full bus at rush hour), that would create less particle matter emissions. I will not ride these busses as I don't want to sponsor such a reckless company that told me lies when I inquired about the problem with them ('we keep our bus fleet regularly serviced and well maintained').

I live in a reasonably central area so I am glad as this price rise will reduce people's usage of cars in the long run. Emission controls are finally coming in in the middle of 2006.

I also don't like people who say how bad the pollution problem is, then get into their 4WD and drive home. I have a 1.3L car and got it tuned. Then I got myself a Charger electric bicycle - it's great. This bike must be pedalled but can add a bit of power to the pedal strokes using batteries (rechargeable from mains) and electric motor. Auckland is a hilly place and this bike lets me travel at close to average speed of the bus, or even of a car if there are many traffic lights. Can bypass all the traffic queues, pass as pedestrian on intersections, etc. But then the air pollution and busses become far more annoying, especially when cycling uphill and when there's no choice to take a deep breath of black diesel fumes or suffocate. But otherways it's great fun to cycle on this bike - can travel at average of 25-30kph without sweat or puffing. The power assist will last for 20-40km in hilly areas, depending on use. The bike is durable and designed very well.

Lately I've been driving because I'm conducting a project the aim of which is to test some of the fuel-saving / emission-reducing devices available on the market and post my findings online to assist others who are interested. I've already had two devices donated to the project, now I'm finding a workshop with a proper diagnostic equipment.

Back to the fuel prices, problem is that the whole food production industry depends on fuel for farming and transportation. But I think gradual price rises are much better than a sudden jump when the reserves are running out.

Before I began my testing project, I was cycling most of the time when the weather allowed, sometimes not starting the car for two weeks.

Overall, in my opinion, in New Zealand, rising fuel prices =

Im under the impression that the places that it DID go up, was where the owners saw the opportunity to make extra cash!

In most places the jump never happened!!
(I know that in Timmins ON it was up to 1.60 or so)

just alot of rumours and panicked people.

EDIT :
sorry Val, missed your post.

Well we're finally contemplating bio-diesel(recycled veg oil) and that can be used in all city buses and garbage trucks... actually most city vehicles are diesel so we could potentially change them all to this fuel.  It's supose to reduce emissions by 70% and is roughly the same cost as diesel.  We really have to excuse not to use it.

TODAY'S HIGH
172.0
Esso
Maloney

TODAY'S LOW
97.2
Sunoco
Blackburn

I like how the price varies by like 90% the highest is almost double the lowest. think of all the retailers whos tanks were filled yesterday at 92-93 cents who are charging 172 (profit margins are usualy 2-3 cents per litre, there making 80 cents a litre!!! x 45000 litres in their tank) makes you think.

even if they only fill 1 car for every 40 they would normally fill they still make the same money.

edit: if I may make a suggestion if you have to fill up at over 110 a litre keep your receipt, Remember what happened after 9/11? the oil companies had to repay their customers for gouging then

$7.00 a gallon?!?    I don't understand the whims of the oil/gas market.

After the initial hike from Katrina (from about $2.69 to $2.99/gallon), many of our prices dropped back down as low as $2.44/gallon.  I got my tank filled at $2.46/gallon this morning, just before everyone boosted their prices back up to $2.69 thanks to Rita.  The information I gave in the other gas thread proved to be inaccurate -- all the stations I saw hovered around $2.99, but AAA found a station in St. Paul charging $3.14 the Wednesday after Katrina hit.  Even that caused people to start calling the attorney general.  I can't imagine the uproar if prices went to $7.00/gallon.

A site for finding cheap(er) gas in the US and Canada: http://www.gasbuddy.com/.  (Holy *@^%$!!!  Someone in Minneapolis is selling gas for $3.19/gallon as of 7:34 this evening!)

Cars aren't nice to bicyclists around here, not to mention the difficulty of biking in the winter.  There are bike lanes on a few roads, but the chosen routes are better for sight-seeing than getting around.  I think I'll just walk.  Free, easy, and enviromentally irreproachable.

They live in Canada, that's $7 a liter.

I got gas the other day for $2.45 before school.  The rest of the stations were jumping up.  THe attendant behind the counter was the biggest jerk in the whole world.  I would have walked out if gas wasn't 15 cents more at the closest station.

Now it's $2.79, at least it was on the way home from school.  It will probably jump up again soon.
