Also since they are undead that means all the neutral creatures don't get their normal +1 morale which can screw every other level 3 you try and use like that.

Can't edit it for some reason-
Like that, in other words any creatures you try and get 0 losses with by waiting, but the neutral creature gets a moral move and attacks first.

From each level my favourites are the Fortress creatures... Anyway, I didn't see anyone mention the Iron Golem. It is very strong and gains almost no damage from spells. A typical defending unit like the Dendroid and the Dwarf, I think. And there have to be such units.

Best lvl 3 huh?
Ok, grand elves kick ass in battles against wondering creatures.
But when doing battle against other heroes, Grand Elves are on the "Obliterate" list. Even the cowardly heroes who retreat, they never forget to tease the Elves with a Lightning or two.
Not to mention that in major battles, my elves barely escape.
In this case, the best 3rd level creatures for big battles are Royal Griffins and Cerberi.

I vote for hell hounds, I don't know if this was chaged in a patch but hell hounds do more damage then cerberus. I know they have that 3 units hit special but I don't usually have a chance of hiting 2 creatures that way, and I can't remember a time when I used them to hit 3 creatures.

Yes you can take elves out easily and they won`t stand for a lot of damage. Well, why there is then such a things as resistance, troops and tactics wich allows player to cover Elves (I prefer myself faster creatures for covering elves while slower troops are put front), War Unicorns, Anti-Magic (and in the case of Blind, Dispel and Cure) and resurrection. So there is a plenty of ways to guard your shooters. Hard to protect? I think not.
For second, Grand Elves will easily do more damage than any other 3rd level creature. With Archery (Rangers will easily get it as logistics and resistance) Grand Elves will do more damage than BOTH Dungeon shooters and with Archery 14 Grand Elves are almost as effective as Titans. Needless to say that Golden Bow makes Elves much more annoying to opponent.
Grand Elves are the best 3rd creature and I don`t believe that none can prove me otherwise.

I like the Golems. Your Grand Elfs might be good, but they will die in the first round. Golems stick around.
Griffins are also good.

I will surely go for the dragonflies.
- there are no Lev 1-6 units, which are faster !
- they have two (!!) special abilities (dispel, weakness)
- they are flyers (in siege combat not unimportant !)
- they have acceptable hitpoints and a/d skills
...nothing more to say.

@Dingo - first of, Thunder already explained that the "diability" of Elves depends on the skill of the player and they might as well all survive to see the end of your last golem. Golems are slow and only useful in sieges and major battles, while Elves are useful in just as many situations as Royal Griffins if you protect them right.

Well the upgraded 3rd level creature I like best is Cerebus.
The best all around though I would have to say are the Iron Golems. I mean as long as you have enough of them they rule, plus you won't lose to many of them since you can still cast Haste,Stone skin, Shield, Bloodlust, Bless, and Prayer (My fav) on them. I mean even Implosion cast by a relativly strong heroe will still not even really kill more than a couple of them! Although every thing changes depending on are they alone or do you have a heroe with them or other troops from there town. I mean if you have the Grand Elves and expet resurection plus some Denedriod gurads Dwarves to guard them your ok. Not to mention the Pegasai to make his bolts or Implosion spells cost more, and a bunch of Centaurs to get at his shooters.
Keep in mind that in all of this each town has it's sucky units to make up for it's really good ones.

Think serpent flies are most usefull lv3 critter. Atleast at start.
Early scouts with 9 speed are great.
Elves pretty good also. Hell hounds and griffins are nice but seems like I never build them.

Way old thread here, and I'm a new poster, hehe.
Anyhow, Dragonflies are Awesome for annoyance. Dispell/weakness, and the speed to quite possibly allow your army to go first, letting you cast the first spell etc.
Grand Elves are my favorite though, they do a great amount of damage from afar. After 4-5 meaningless battles you have a good chance of having all your elves still... while you'll likely have lost some Dragon Flies if you use them to take out archers (and get surrounded and slaughtered in the process).

You cannot beat Royal Griffins. I think they are the coolest looking units in the game and if you have heaps you can defeat an entire army with their unlimited retaliation.

maybe its the spells that are so strong...?
