Good evening..
Well in my opinion grand elves are the best 3lvl units cause they shoot so perfectly.. Then I like orcs because they cost so low Golems are interesting because against a spell caster like faerie dragons, you won't lose really much
Royal griffins are good in traditional maps but in adventure maps (like empire of the world 2) i rarely use them cause they deal not so much dmg..
Dragonflies are really fast and that is a reason why I buy them in every map.. But in my favourite list evil eyes are on top of the list cause I have always had great experiences with them. Just imagine that you have 100< of them in traditional maps and other dungeon troops behind the wall while defending..

Also, can't grand elves be upgraded to sharpshooters (or whatever they're called) if certain conditions are met?

Only Gelu can, so it's limited to the campaign and a very low amount of scenarios.

Anyway, my favs are:
1. Grand Elf - makes 1st and 2nd week for Rampart great!
2. Royal Griffin - 3rd lvl tank Unl. retaliations
3. Dragon Fly - great speed and good defence + weakness

Royal griffs have the best stats of all level 3 creatures in average. They're like the naga queens of level 3's, stat-wise.
The reason this often isn't very obvious is due to the big cut between level 1-3 and level 4-6 units.
You can find level 1 units which can beat level 2 units (e.g. centaur captain vs. some shooters, zombies, etc.). You can find level 2 units, which can beat level 3 units (The most applied example is wolf raiders vs. orc chieftans). But you can't find any level 3 units able to defeat level 4 units. The most powerful level 3 unit when considering all stats (including speed), loses to the weakest level 4 unit stat wise (silver pegasi).
For level 4 units, the obvious example would be vampire lords, which are as strong as some of the strongest level 5 units, but another example would be arch-magi, sharpshooters, etc. Oh right I forgot, there's actually an instance where a level 3 unit can defeat a level 4 unit. Dragon Flies destroyes Sharpshooters. Which is kinda funny considering Sharpshooters easily defeats Dendroids, which easily defeats Dragon Flies. Among level 5 units, Master Genies can, as a wild example, take down Dread Knights, but that's very luck based and there are other more obvious encounters which favors the level 5 unit against the level 6 unit.

Grand Elves are the best if you ask me. Exelent for clearing the mines and will be useful in the late game.

You're right the_horn, that's something I always liked about Royal Grifs, and which really makes up for the big difference from level 3 to level 4 units.
@NoobX
Grand Elves are indeed a much more important unit for Rampart than RG's are for Castle. Another example is the Cerberus. Despite having very nice stats, second or third best among level 3 units, Inferno will usually still convert 100% of their dogs into Demons.

That's nice in ideal 1vs 1 situation, but you need to see the use of each creature in real combat in my opinion.

Right again, you are. I was merely pointing out that RG's are anything, but weak. If you look at my previous post directed at NoobX, you'll also see I agree that, e.g., Grand Elves, despite having worse total stats, are more important for Rampart, than RG's are for Castle.
Edit: Likewise are Dragon flies much more important for forretress due to the very early travel bonus to their heroes.

You're right, dragon fly is a must unit in fortress army due to their lack of speed units.
Also, iron golems managed to save my &ss a few times for now.
I was nearly defeated by a bigger army of my opponent, and then started to cast armaggedon and run with iron golems in battlefield as much as I could, and win that fight and game in the end.

Hahah, that's cool. Salamandre also sometimes talks about the "good ol' days", where there were two types of scouts. The common scout of today and then the magic focused scout. A hero which focused on magic and slowly travelled around with todays useless, slow, high hp, units, such as Battle Dwarfs and Zombies. In a scout war, this hero would often be able to defeat opponent scouts, simply by applying damaging spells and having much more hit points than the opposing site.
I think it's Salamandre who'll sometime talk about this, but you'll have to check his program code to make sure.

The choice wasn't easy but I decided that my favourite 3rd level unit is grand elf. His double shot can do a lot of damage. Hit points are low but if elves are well protected, they can kill many enemies. Other units on this level are good too but in my opinion elves beat them all.

Level 3 is very difficult, in my opinion. Grand Elves are fantastic, especially for early expansion, but their low HP makes them very vulnerable. The high speed of Dragonflies is a huge boost, and their specials are just the icing on the cake. Dispel and Weaken on their attacks? Amazing. The Griffins, of course, are all-around power, with great stats, a useful ability, and (most importantly) a horde building.
Beholders are a sort of anti-Elf; their damage output isn't nearly as good but they are significantly more sturdy. This does mean that you'll probably have more of them for the final battle, but their absurd cost (1 of each resource for a lvl 3 dwelling?) keeps them from top tier. Cerberi are a toss-up. Nice damage, and three-headed attack can occasionally come in handy, but they die too easily, especially since they're out there mixing it up. Golems provide a lot of staying power and some nifty resistance to spell damage, but their low speed is enough to keep them from the upper echelons.
Finally, we've got the bottom: The Orc and Ice Elemental, both mediocre shooters, and the Wraith, good for only Wraith-bombs. Which is a shame, the self-heal ability is really cool.
I might rank them:
1) Royal Griffin (by virtue of their growth, if nothing else)
2) Grand Elf
3) Dragonfly
4) Evil Eye
5) Cerberus
6) Iron Golem
7) Ice Elemental
8) Orc Chieftan
9) Wraith (blech).
Necro is such a funny town, a blend of amazing and awful units.

Grand Elves like most archer are useful when clearing the map but i tend to dislike archers in general because they will be the first to go. So my vote goes for Dragon Flies.

Golem
1. Grand Elf
No surprise here. They're a great shooter which shoots twice and they are very cheap as far as I am concerned.
2. Royal Griffin
Strong and fast in a huge group. The reason that I didn't put it as the first place was because it doesnt shoot. They're a tad bit expensive if I remember correctly but it pays up.
3. Berserker Fly (or dragon fly if it isnt called that)
Weakness, flying, meh damage.. Quite cheap for their stats though.
4. Cerberus
Three-way attacks yes please! They are one of the reasons that makes Inferno a good town, a shame this isnt added as a requirement for Forsaken Place though.
5. Wraith
Steals some spell points, regenerates, cheap, flies.. What else is there to say? Except for that they have low health.
6. Orc Chieftains
A nice addition to the stronghold town but you need alot of attack skill for these to hit good enough to kill stuff quickly.
7. Ice Elemental
Here is where it starts to get terrible. Their stats aren't good and sure, they shoot but that doesnt make up alot to it.
8. Evil Eye
Oh god. I don't even wanna talk about this. A terrible shooter for short. Brings shame to the Dungeon tower because they are expensive and not that good.
9. Iron Golems
Worst upgrade ever. They are expensive, terribly slow and will probably die before they reach their target.
Remember, this is my opinion and no one can change it except me :3

You are wrong. My biggest beef is Orc Chieftans over Ice Elementals/Evil Eyes. If you look at their stats Orc Chieftans are inferior to the other two in pretty much everything, with the sole exception of cost and slightly more growth than Ice Elementals. But cheap cost, to me, is not a good trade-off for terrible stats, and Orc Chieftans are uber-weak to the point of being rarely useful. Oh and Evil Eyes are a better deal than Ice Elementals if you look at their costs IMO.
Wraiths are also way too high. Stats are terrible. Regeneration is OK but not that good when you have low HP/defense, and taking 2 spell points per turn is eh. And they're more expensive than Grand Elves, lolbalance
The top half of the list looks good though.

Wraiths are also weak in my humble opinion... but if you give them for Chinese players, they can handle them perfectly in some Chinese maps wraiths are key to victory (at least in some battles i think). It was like dealing against 100x stronger opponent, all own units die but wraiths survive, opponent's spell points to zero, resurrect own army, kill enemy's troops without any losses etc... crazy battles
