Adventure Spells

I was reading the Spells section at Age of Heroes (great work, sfidanza!) and noticed that the requirements for Adventure Spells were not listed. After some searching online and testing done with the demo, here are some ideas. Hopefully, we'll get more info when the manual is released.

In Heroes V adventure spells don't belong to any of the four schools of magic (unlike in the prequels, e.g. Town Portal was an Earth Magic spell). Now each faction gets the spells as soon as an appropriate level of Mage Guild has been built.

In addition, it is important to note that all heroes can learn all the adventure spells when they reach the required level, regardless of their magic skills and abilities. For example, you do not need to have Expert Summoning or Wisdom to learn Summon Creature spell - the only prerequisites are a hero level 10 and Mage Guild level 3. Naturally, the hero still has to enter the town.

The complete chart looks like this:

There's a gap between levels 1 and 10 - is it just a balance issue or...?

Again, there are still lots of unknown things to find out in the future.

Here's some info based on the official description and my testing:

1) Town Portal doesn't require any movement points left.

2) When cast, Town Portal sets the hero's movement points to 0.

3) Instant Travel requires the hero still has 50% of the movement left.

4) The hero cannot summon a boat if there are no boats on the map, even if he has the spell and is standing next to the water.

Thanks Vlaad. Nice explanatory post.
I'm adding comments to the spells, because some lack explanations. So some of that info will be directly available there. I'll wait for confirmation for the actual mechanics of Instant Travel and Town Portal and add notes about that too (and check it myself when I can).

Thanks , although my intention was to start a discussion. It seems we'll have to wait for more info, though.

You were right NOT to add my notes, as some of the results were incorrect. I've edited the Instant Travel explanation above to avoid confusion, since the movement points obviously do not equal the spellpower (e.g. a hero with spellpower 30 will not move 30 movement points using Instant Travel ).

Oh yes, that would be nice

As you say, it would be good if others join the discussion here, so we can gather those infos on Instant Travel and Town Portal.
On Town Portal, you say it doesn't require movement points left. But I guess it is limited to one portal per day. Or is it not?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems point 4) on Summon Boat is explicit in the official desc:
"Summons a sea ship. Hero must stand on a shore and there must be an unoccupied boat nearby for the spell to be successful."
(ok, I edited it: "unoccupied" is actually "occupied" in the demo, which doesn't make any sense...).

Also the modified spells pages with comments and explanations are not yet online, but they will be soon.

It's not. It is supposed to, since casting Town Portal sets the hero's movement points to 0. That means the hero cannot move farther than the town he has just teleported to. However, if that town is Haven with Stables and the hero has not visited it this week, he'll get a movement bonus - enough to move farther that day... and cast Town Portal again! So, it is possible to cast Town Portal twice a day.

I'll add the explanations we're gathering here as soon as there more complete and confirmed.

Yeah, did all that.

Just now loaded earlier save to see if I missed something, but again no Instant Travel. Was level 15 now.

Also, mage guild said there is only summon creatures, so I think not a bug, but it was just disabled on map. Falcon map played, with academy vs dungeon.

Btw, little off topic, but Lethos is scary. Start of combat, mass decay casted. Or poison, not sure. Know that many troops of mine died, and continued dying. :-)

Lethos is scary, very scary.

Town portal only takes you to the closest city. You can not exploit this by placing other heroes in towns.

Those are all the adventure spells, nothing at level 5.

I'm glad to see that Instant Travel aka Dimension Door is now made into a reasonable spell. You can no longer jump through half a map, the range of the teleportation is very, very limited (it's like 4 squares)
I have a feeling that those spells were well though out.

Blaaah - they've rendered Town Portal completely useless? Not only can you no longer choose your town - and we're talking level 20 heroes here, so it's gonna be late game, and thus a powerfull spell wouldn't be completely off - you're also using all your movement. So, basically the deal is - you can use all your movement at being transported to a random town - and if that's in the wrong end of the map, you can use ALL your movement the next day at trying a new town, and so forth ... On large maps, that's gonna be an awful lot of wasted days with random traveling. They could have at least made an extra spell availabe at level 25 or 30 with the full Town Portal power:

Vessel Of Shalasa - level 1 spell - avialable at 5th level
Summon Creature - level 2 spell - available at 10th level
Instant Travel - level 3 spell - available at 15th level
Town Gate - level 4 spell - available at 20th level
Town Portal - level 5 spell - available at 25th level

Do you know whether it's possible to travel to a town with a visiting hero? (In other words, can you increase your odds by blocking off certain town - and will this just make the town fail if you hit an occupied town?)

I think a lot of this information was on the site - but thanx anyway.

No, it's not possible to travel to a town with a visiting hero, BUT you can't exploit the spell in this way. Town portal teleports you not to a random, but to a closest town.
If another hero is occupying the closest town, you simply cannot cast town portal.

The good news is the AI can use Instant Travel and Town Portal very well. I've just played "a very big multiplayer scenario" in singleplayer mode versus computer opponents, and the AI's heroes skipped border gates and mountains and gated back to their towns for reinforcements.

1. Summon Creature is probably the only useful spell.
2. Instant Travel is absolutely useless, the distance you can travel is TOO short!
3. Town Portal is nearly useless, just ask yourself how many times you wish to return to the nearEST town.
4. Vessel of Shalasa is another almost useless spell --- it does not create boat, but you must find an empty boat nearby.

it is VERY useful for jumping over obstacles. That's how it should be used. I think it is a clever solution without making the spell overpowered. Admittedly, i would tone down the Movement Point consumption.

once again, it should use strategically. get nearER a town, and bam, you travel quickly. Imagine two town in opposite corners. when you're in the middle of the map, you can travel almost instantly to one. It can be very helpful to defend, obviously.

still, useful for some situations. Not all the spells should be cast over and over again, i would find that very boring =)

Instant travel?

In any case, instant travel is basically the same as dimension door except you can't "train" it. I dont see any use in it except unless you wanna avoid the colour gate thingy.

Summon creatures is good but the mana toll is too high (esp for 1st and 2nd level units). You will need nearly hundred mana to just summon all your creatures.

I agree, but in "Rise for Power" the colour gate thingies are all over the map, most off them located very close to your town.

Not a problem if you have a magic well nearby.

About Town Portal...

I know multiple sources say that Town Portal drains the rest of your move points, but I was playing a Single Scenario map this one time, and after I used TP, I still had enough move points to go about 4 or 5 more steps.  (I TPed to a Sylvan town, not Haven, so I didn't have any stables.)  This only happened once, so it might have been a glitch?  I'll have to look into it.
