Quote: Why are you playing fantasy games then?
play Age of empires if you want animals!
PLEASE dont ruin this game with snowty creatures like animals.
Its idiotic. NONE of the previous HOMM games had wild animals in them and it worked alright. so lame....you already got ravaging monsters, why have animals? worst idea ever. KEEP THE ORIGINAL HEROES FORMULA WITH 3D GRAPHICS SOUNDS FINE TO ME! Animals....bah
listen to this dude everybody!

I am entitled to my own opinion just like your exspressing your own right now.
However....I wont worry about this idea cuz it wont be implemented anyawys. They said they will follow the HOMM formula and theres no place for Roaming animals there. Why dont you ppl go play Zoo thypoon or sumthing?

Sorry, i was in a bad mood. (evil Teacher) but actualy now that i think of it, it would be a bit strange to be attacked by elephants. Mabey it could be a building, like a broken zoo where the animals run wild and you have to save them.

Fregglez:Quote: Maybe the frequency of attacks would depend on how strong your army is, it's more propable that a wolf would attack a lone halfling, then a full sised army, complete with dragons and all.
....
This way by just laying the terrain, you could make some areas inaccesable in the beginning of the game, when the player isn't strong enough to pass the difficult terrain.
that's exactly what i would like to see. some terrains that acted as obstacles for most part of the game becoming passable when you are powerful enough and defeating the map is just a matter of totally unchallenging travelling time with your amy of 100 black dragons and 100 titans.
reminds me of the idea of having sphinx instead of some border guards. you could get the answer to the sphinx's riddle from some oracle who lives far away or you could defeat it with a sufficiently powerful army.
maybe there could be encounters ranging from a solitary manticore that avoids larger armies to encounters with 100 dendroids.
========
and i really can't understand those who are complaining about too natural creatures. don't you know any mythological creatures that like to live in forests and look freaky enough?

So with other words, you would sit down for 5 hours before being able to even explore the whole map? Why dont just use the HOMM map generator and place badguys in every passage?

possible too, but this would bring a bit more varuety. Not allways having monster guards, but sometimes a riddle or a quest.. With ur argument, u could even replace all border gates with monsters

i like confusing people and sending them in obscure directions with quests. but seriously, quest gards are very cool. they are much better than monsters in an interactive adventure.

DARKMASTER:
yes, you could do it the traditional way, but i think passable yet possibly dangerous forests that are too menacing to enter in the beginning game (a bit less dangerous if you are an elf maybe) would add some mystery atmosphere to the game.
and if we are talking about neutral monster ambush, forest seems to be one of the best places to put them. of course there are possible monsters for other terrains, but i would prefer that open plain would be relatively safe. you can just see the open plain dangers from far away unless they are undead that are hidden underground in some undead terrain. maybe there are some other terrains that could have ambushing monsters on them, but i think the game would become somewhat uncomfortable to play if this was overdone.
i think it would be nice if on most maps you could win the game by only walking in the open. passable forest would just speed up the late game.
Daystar:
what i wanted to say with the sphinx instead of some of the border guards was: you can get it earlier and easier if you run around the map. but the mapmaker can eliminate some of the late game boredom (and of course it's a matter of taste if we want to call it boredom or not). it means that the sphinx would have to be tough to pass.
i like games where i don't have to explore all the map and defeat all monsters. e.g. i did like the elf campaign's first scenario where all you had to do was conquer one town and then run past the hostile towns and heroes.

come on....Would you like a bear you would need 100 titans and 100 black dragons to defeat? or did you mean like 5000 bears?
You could make a cool demon bear thou, enormous with spikes on its shoulders and a red glow in his eyes. Maybe with gigantic evil-looking metal claws. I would definatly go for that!

this idea is good. in most fantasy books you do get bears and lions and things.
also, what about archers, and pikemen? in mideaval times you were more likeley to see one of them than you were to see a bear or a lion. in a fantasy world you would be seeing things like dragons and griffins, but you might never see a bear if you stay holed up in your hut. by that logic, the bear is more rare and facinating than the dragon!
did that make any sense?
