I am not sure what your areas of study are in your school, but I will wager that learning H5 scripting is a challenge equal to any of them, especially if you have not done any computer programming before.
If you wish to relax from your exams, get a copy of HOMMM3. Making H3 maps is a simple and relaxing creative outlet, and you can share your creations with the HOMM community. I posted an H3 map about a month ago and it has been downloaded by over 400 players from the Celestial Heavens web site, so it is still very much alive and well in the community. If you are inclined to heed this advice, you can get H3 free with BitTorrent, or look on e-Bay and get it for a few dollars. Try to get the H3 Complete package that has the original H3 plus the two subsequent expansions.
If you like H5, you will like or even love H3, since H5 is more like updating of H3 that does not offer superior game play.

Oh, you know, I loved H2, H3 and H4 too. But thanks for the advice. I didn't know there are still so many H3-ers. Interesting. (and bittorrent is illegal, isn't it? )
Ah, I think I leave scripting for the summer break and make a simple "kill them all map". Thinking of I didn't intend to involve scripting at all, but I accidentally chose tiny map and I thought a prequel would be nice...
Anyway, a map needs to be done, a kingdom has to be endangered by loathsome evil and heroes are to be called... umm ^^"

Like many things in life, BitTorrent is a tool that can be used for good or evil. I was giving you a choice, not a recommendation.
I think a prequel would be a good addition to your map, and I have a strong desire to see the HOMM community survive. You seem to have the kind of energy it needs. So, I will help you if you are willing to collaborate. If you make your H5 map, placing the hut of the magi and the garrison where you desire them, and send me a copy of the map via email, I will do the coding required to make that objective work for you, and then I will send the map back to you. You may then proceed with your development effort and testing on your own.

Wow thanks!
It's kind of you. Good that I didn't delete that map I'm sending it right away then. You really do have enthusiasm for the heroes community, don't you?
ps.:I hope my joke about torrent didn't offend you or sg. After all the help you gave me the last thing I would like is to offend you in any way.

Good that you are sending the map right away. I may have to go out of town to a funeral in a distant land far away from my computer in the near future. The timing of this trip is up in the air but I think I will have enough time to do the coding and write a few notes for you.
Truth -- the larger the ego, the smaller the thing required to give offense. Consequently, it is nearly impossible to offend me these days, though that has not always been true.
My children grew up playing H2, H3, and H4. I spent many a happy hour making allegorical story maps for them and playing hot-seat games with the family. As I get older, I am getting more sentimental and view the HOMM games with great nostalgia. So, while I cannot bring those times back, I can support the community who also loves HOMM and call tell similar stories from their own lives.
BTW -- play a few of my H5 maps and let me know what you think. My favorites are The Virgin of Ponce II, and Mining Tycoon.

I would love to try your maps, too bad I have only H5 standard and it won't run them. Sometime -when the cost lowers a bit- probably I'll buy TotE.

The map-check thingy tells me this:
"Shrine at [coordinates] has spell level SPELL_NONE but spell of its level is not allowed on this map." or something very similar. What does this supposed to mean? I didn't restrict spell-levels anywere as far as I remember.

Well these may seem very easy questions to experts but here they go:
1. How do I connect subterranean gates on surface and underground? Placing one right atop the other does not seem to work (or I am blind and have misplaced it).
2. How do I place a Tear-of-Asha structure in a town, can I do it for a random neutral town?
3. Can I block passage with an obstacle that is quest removable? If yes, how?

3. Can I block passage with an obstacle that is quest removable? If yes, how?
As my above question obvioulsy shows I'm not an expert but I may be able to help with problem 1 and 2.
1, You click the subterra-gate (select it) hit scpace button, then a small properties window pops up. You can select groups there. Select group 1 for example. Now select the subterra exit, hit space then select group 1 there too.
Many other things can be groupped: teleports, whirlpools, hut of magi, eye of magi. It should work, though I did not try in practice, but the manual says so as well.
2, You need to select the town and hit the space again. Go to the Buildings tab in the popup properties window. There you can customize buildings. You select the building then check/uncheck build. Also you can fordide (disable) buildings. You can perfectly disregard the in-game building tree. You can customize a town like this: town hall, castle, archangel dwelling, archer tower, disabled smith, disabled cloister (monastery whatever).
All you need is to find the name of the grail building and check "build".
As far as I have experienced you can't build grail structure in random towns, but I can be wrong.
3, Sounds like scripting to me. Cry out loud for help
-----------------------------------------------------------
I still am waiting for help about the check-map thingy. I hope this thread is not dead except for this few 3 people...

@ Galev
Most of the map check error messages are without meaning. This message that you are worrying about can be safely ignored. No one uses them. The only error messages that have value are the errors reported on the developer's console. Unfortunately, by default, the console is not enabled, so don't go looking for it.

Thank you Galev .
As to #2, I am more interested in random towns, unfortunately.
Perhaps someone with proper expertise will answer #2 and #3.

Yes you can have obstacles that are quest removable, but you must use the script to do so. Look at the script in my Jackdaw Jake map to see how it is done. It is difficult to tell you exactly how to do it in a forum message because the script has to be tied to the player's actions and the objects on your map.
If you truly wish to do it, then download the The Basics of Heroes V Scripting ver. 2.0 for H5, HOF, & ToTE from here: http://www.celestialheavens.com/viewpage.php?id=567 Read it cover to cover, then study the script in Jackdaw Jake until you can figure out how to try it in your map. Ask for help when you get stuck.
As for the grail structure in a random town, I am pretty sure you are going to have to hide the grail artifact near the town and make it easy to discover. For example, use just one puzzle monolith.

I need help. I created a tiny duel kind of map with multiplayer purposes. But I accidentaly made a single scenario. Please tell me there is a way to convert it into a multiplayer map and I don't have to re-do all the job.

Thank you rdeford, I will attend to those scripts in some time.
About the grail structure, I want it to be there already when the town is conquered, so your advice is of little help to me. Thanks anyway .

Then you probably need to creatively go around the problem. If you think, post the main idea of the map (why you want it to be a random town etc) and we might be able to find out something together...

I agree with Galev about using creativity. You could, for example, make the grail artifact available to the player upon approaching the castle. Using the script, it is fairly easy to give an artifact to a particular player and/or hero upon entering a region on the map. Or, better yet, you can give the artifact to the hero when the castle is captured. To remove any doubt as to your intention, you can easily pop up a message to the player telling him or her to use it on that castle. If you are interested, I can post an example script that will give the artifact to the hero when the castle is captured.
