You know, I was editing the height of an object once and it suddenly vanished! I put a new one in and it vanished too when I edited it's height. I had to restart the program to get the program to let me do what I wanted. Silly editor, both the objects were on the map according to that list so I had to delete them that way.

What happenns to me when something "vanishes" is a bad habit I have of not being careful when making changes at XYZ. (I'm really prone to this if I am tired or making a lot of changes) e.g. At times I will take X or Y to a .5 value or point something, so when I re-enter the number instead of say, 126.5 (wanting to center an object), then I forget the decimal point and poof! Then I'll find it at the very edge of the map Needless to say, there is no cell numbered 1,265.
When I do this with colors...no big deal. I just see that something's wrong, like no color or I get temporarily blinded, but tracking down objects when I'm not sure what it was that I mis-entered?, I'm more deliberate now.
I guess height mis-fire I have yet to encounter, since I have not lost something, "in that direction"
About the Editor. I've experienced the same thing. I don't know why but since I do a lot of mapping, it seems if I do not "re-boot the computer" for long peroids of time, then the Editor seems to be much more fickle. You might try this; I have noticed one thing that seems to ward-off the problems to some degree and that is " frequently saving the map, alot". It seems like it sort of "re-sets" the editor besides safeguarding. Nowadays it gives me less headaches and I'm guessing it is that newer habit of mine.

Hey everyone, I was just wondering if there was any way to make a subterranean level look like the above ground of a map. Essentially I would have two above grounds, with each accessible by subterranean gates. And by "any way" I do actually mean any way, mods, fixes, buttons, magical Map Editor goblins. Anything.
Thanks for the help

Easy as pie. Simply clear the whole thing out. Then use the same tiles to cover the floor as you do above ground, such as grass, sand, etc. You can use trees, mountains, rivers, etc. You might wish to set the ambient lighting to the same as your above ground as well.

Excellent! Thanks for the help, I appreciate it.
Also though... How would I change the ambient lighting of the underground to match the aboveground?

I could answer that but why not follow my link listed at bottom of this post? there are sections where I talk about the "skydome" and also about point-lighting. That's my favorite part of mapmaking. Well that and creating the land.

If you can post an episode, I'll take a look to see what you mean. Those maps should be available for D/L if you're interested in looking them over yourself.

I seem to recall a post from a long time ago from a map maker who said he was able to copy/paste from the campaign map into his map to recreate those deep fissures. As Markuur says, you can get separated, editable copies of the campaign maps. I downloaded them back when I was a beginning script writer to see how they scripted the various special effects and other tricks. As I remember it, I did a search (e.g. Google) to find out where they were posted for download.

Hello everyone. I'm new here but have played the Heroes of M & M games since HMM-2.
I've been playing with the editor for HMM-5 and can't for the life of me get the town shipyard to work properly.
I always get the message "there aren't any workers to build a boat" but I'm thinking that that is just the game's way of saying "you haven't set your town up properly". (I enabled "BUILD" for the shipyard in the town too)
I have the coordinates for a boat to appear set up, but I noticed when looking at a campaign map's town that they show coords in the minus (ie -12, 10)???. Is it counting coordinate squares FROM the town. How come I can't use the coordinates shown in the bottom-right of the editor?
Also, is the water supposed to "touch" a town in a specific way as it did in earlier HMM games?
I searched all through this thread and couldn't find the answers.
If anyone still uses this site, could you please assist me?
Thanks in advance.

I haven't messed with the H5 editor in years, but I can answer your question. Place the town near the water. But a ramp down into the water next to the town. Place the shipyard at the top of the ramp and watch the water at the foot of the ramp carefully as you slowly slide the shipyard around a bit. When you see a faint square of color (blue I think) appear in the water at the foot of the ramp, stop moving the shipyard around. That's the spot where it will work for the town.

When you place a town near water (will need to move it around a bit) you will see the green water access cell at times. (passaiblity must be off to see the tile) Set the town where its cell is where you want to get on ships.
Shipyards will work two ways. The first is with the water brush in making rivers lakes etc. The other way is if you've "lowered" the terrain to what I call the ocean. However, to access that water there needs to be a "ramp" near where you want to place the town. Also when you ramp; "smith the ramp" so your boats will stay whole when you summon them <L> Btw, the XY-coods for the ship tile do not work, so you'll have to do it as I've shared.

That's correct...and in the past<S>

Sorry Dante, I haven't seen it, hopefully somebody else has but not a lot of people visit this forum anymore. Only a few more dedicated people.
I have a question for everybody though. I've been researching the old "how to customize a town's spell list" problem and haven't found much in the way of definite answers.
I tried editing the town's spell ID list in the map editor and that turns out to do absolutely nothing.
Is there a way to customize spells in a town or am I just stuck with customizing spell shrines?

@fulano: It doesn't work because your file isn't copywrighted. In other words, any time you save your changes and close the editor, it changes back to default. That's because AdvMapTown belongs to the hardcoded files. To avoid that, you need to copy the town-/map-file from the data-folder/your map-folder (open the map with winrar) and change it externally. Then you make it copywrighted and put the file back into your mapfolder.
I'm not sure if your concern will work this way, but what you can definately do is make a new town-file and change its visual appearance, costs for buildings and even the magic schools.
Hope that helps

Thanks for the reply, though I'm a little confused at what you're saying. Let me see if I understood:
First, by "copywrighted" do you mean "read only"?
Second, it looks like you're referring to changing the "AdvMapTown" files. After scanning through them it looks like all I can do is change the school of magic the town favors. The list I'm talking about is in the "Map.xdb" file. I'm not seeing such a list anywhere else in the data files that might be overriding my settings.
The map editor lets you change what spells are available globally in the "View > Map Properties" window, but in the town properties tree on the left there is a list of spells for individual towns too. It looks like the town list doesn't do anything. Maybe it lets you disable spells globally then enable spells for the specific town... Or maybe the town SpellIDs disable what spells can be used during combat... I'll go test that.
If anybody knows where there are map editor mods available for download, I'm sure Dante would appreciate it.
@Dante: I'm disappointed in Heroes VI and I haven't even played it yet. Besides I figure I'm too old and busy anymore to go learn how to play and mod a new version of Heroes.
EDIT: As far as I can tell the SpellID list for the towns has no effect whatsoever. That's probably why there isn't a spell tab when you press spacebar and look at the town properties window in the map editor. Looks like I'm just down to just specifying what is in the spell shrines.
Does anybody know a way to teach a level 4 or 5 spell to a hero during the game? Like customizing a pyramid or something?
