...I guess it wouldn't hurt to go through this again as there appears to an abundance of newbies these days (no offense)...
Favorite playing town: Conflux
Most powerful town (in my opinion): Dungeon
Coolest town: Rampart

My favorite town in Dungeon...forever! Conflux would have to be my second favorite.
I can't believe you...you liked KNIGHT in Heroes II?! It was the worst town type!

being an Elf there is only one choice... Rampart!!!
the reasons:
1. "Tolkien" units (Elves, Dwarves, Dendroids)
2. Average army strength
3. Great economy
BTW: don't bother to ask me which HoMM4 town is going to be my favorite... Preserve all the way!!!!

Any town can do
My story is a long one... first, as anybody, I liked Castle most. Then Necropolis. Then I liked Tower. Then Rampart. Finally Inferno and now-Dungeon. I'm not inclusing Conflux for I think playing with it is like using the cheat codes (yes, it's so powerful). Stronghold can be nice as well but i doesn't suit my type of gaming. So is Fortress, it can be a mighty town but it's not my specialty.
So, my favourite town is the one I'm currently playing with. :-))
p.s. Don't think Inferno is a bad town. Just play with it for a while and we can have a discussion then.

I know that KNIGHT in heroes 2 was the weaker town
but i think that we choose the town we like not the town that are the sronger...
And generally if u like a town and u know how to use u can make it powerful!
example:
i had beat many times my friends that they played with Warlock and Sorceress(Warlock was the most pwerful)

I always play with the towns I feel like. Maybe it dont make me a specialist in one town, but I have fun and thats the most important. If I want to see a behemoth stick his giant claws in an ugly hydra I play stronghold. If I want to Throw lightning bolts at my enemy I play as tower.
But in homm2 I have to admit, my favourite town was Barbarian. Because of the powerful ogre lord!

Each town's strengths and weaknesses:
Castle: All around solid units, although Monks are a bit weak. Best level 7. Average economy and speed. Good unit distribution (low and mid shooters, mid and high flyers). Average magic at best. Overall, a great town.
Dungeon: Mostly good units, but worst level 1. Fair economy, good speed. Excellent distribution (2 mid shooters, low and 2 high flyers). Strong magic, among the best. A good town, but not the best.
Fortress: Good units most of the way through. Best level 5, but worst level 6. Average economy but slow troops. Poor distribution (only one shooter, mid and weak high flyers). Weak magic. A decent town but not very good.
Inferno: Lots of poor units (worst level 4, level 1 saved only by good speed). Poor economy but very fast troops. Poor distribution (only one shooter, no low/mid flyers). Above average magic but not great. A weak town on a good day, abysmal on a bad one.
Necro: The good (level 4 and 6), the bad (2, 3, 7), and the ugly (2). Great economy and good speed. Good distribution (only one shooter, but it's excellent; 2 mid and one high flyer). Average magic or slightly better. A slightly below average town.
Rampart: Average to above average units almost all the way through. Best level 1. Excellent economy and decent speed (some slow, others very fast). Fair distribution (one shooter but a good one; a mid and a high flyer). Average magic. Overall an excellent town.
Stronghold: Good units, especially from the middle up. Decent economy (better have crystal!) and fair speed. Bad distribution (mid and high shooters, but only 1 flyer). Poor magic. A good town if there's abundant crystal, otherwise forget it.
Tower: Average to excellent units all the way through. Level 3 is tough as nails, and 4 is excellent too. Poor economy but reasonable speed. Supreme distribution (shooters at low, mid, high; flyers in low and mid). Excellent magic. One of the best towns.
Conflux: Like Necro, some good units (2, 3, 6) and some bad (4, 5). Excellent economy and good speed. Excellent distribution (low and mid shooters, flyers at low, mid, high). The best magic (only because of the Grail ). A great town, but it has its vulnerabilities.
Town rankings:
1) Castle
2) Tower
3) Conflux
4) Rampart
5) Dungeon (unless you have a few of them, way too much gold, a few gem ponds, and a Faerie Dragon lair )
6) Stronghold
7) Fortress
8) Necro
9) Inferno
