Quote: Inferno: Lots of poor units (worst level 4, level 1 saved only by good speed). Poor economy but very fast troops. Poor distribution (only one shooter, no low/mid flyers). Above average magic but not great. A weak town on a good day, abysmal on a bad one.
I disagree here. Most guys who have barely played with Inferno often dismiss it as stupid, useless and uninteresting town. HOWEVER! I have 2 words here: Castle gate. Holy Mother! If you have 2 Inferno towns, you have won. Great thing! Better than TP- no SP used or movement. And you can upgrade only 1 town and upgrade all the creatures. I do admit Archdevils are the weakest creatures (VIIL) in the game but Efreeti Sultans and Armageddon rule!

i believe, it is most challenging to play with the necromancers. their seventh creature is so weak that it hardly counts. the vampire lords are a thrill to play with. in my opinion, castle is the most boring of all. it is just too strong a weapon even in the hands of a mediocre player.
i hope the h4 would be more balanced. not that h3 is unbalanced, but just knights are a bit too powerful fighting alongside with archangels.

Hm, the same hought goes for Conflux. When I play Hot Seat with my friends, we ban it. You just get TOO strong. BTW, I think a Titan is as strong as any Archangel.

I've played plenty with Inferno. Castle Gate requires a few things:
1) You have to have multiple Infernos. On small maps this is rare.
2) You have to be in town to use it, which is not that useful.
3) You can't get to any other towns of yours, just the Infernos.
So Castle Gate isn't that great. Useful, yes, but only if you're in the town anyway. Unless you have Infernos all over the map, TP beats the Gate any day. The "Armageddon Army" is a good tactic, but that and Sacrifice to the Pit Lords are the only things that make the town even semi-playable.

Inferno
I never realized Inferno was that weak, and the funny thing is I don't usually take the time to harvest demons and I almmost never build the castle gate (too much daym cash that can be better utilized elsewhere)
I do usually play TOH games where on most maps arma is taken out of the guilds also. So I guess I should be whining about how wimpy Inferno is.....I like inferno In that Devils are great for clearing a map. It may take awhile but devils with no retaliation can wait, attack and then run to other side of battlefield, very useful for clearing out slow walkers, dwarven treasuries ect. early in the game. also a main hero runnin with sultans and devils/archdevils has one of the better speeds on the map, you can send a secondary hero out with the demons/pit fiends/ lords if want to harvest demons or have a secondary clearing force.
It sounds to me most these comments are based on very long scenarios where the weaknesses of most any castle can be exploited, but If you look for the strengths, any castle can be strong also.
btw I love going random on all matches for 2 reasons, 1)I never can decide what castle to pick (I love em all) and 2) how do you expect to get good at other castles if you never play them.

What a person defines as 'weak castle' often comes down to their playing style. Some of us like speed, other's like shooters, others like magic and some just go for all out might. You all know that a combination of all of these things in your gaming strategy is bound to be a winning one (most of the time), but the problem (if it even is a problem), is that most towns do not allow you to utilize all of these traits within your army. There is always a weakness, and no one town is perfectly balanced.
Castle is far too overrated in my opinion. Sure, powerful town, but it's not unbeatable, regardless of the skill of the opposition. And Licking, necro is easier to play than any other town in HoMM. So what if your level 7s are weak? Your vamp lords in substantial numbers are very very difficult to get rid of with animate dead spell and those 1000's of skeletons you can amass is a game ender any day of the week. Add to that one of the most awesome shooters in the game (the dreaded lichs), and you can just about run around a map without wraiths, ghost drags and zombies and still open up a can of whooparse on experienced players.
Dungeon is my favourite, it suits my style of play down to a tee. I also like Stronghold. Stronghold would be one of my favourite towns were it not for it's ridiculous reliance upon crystal (it's either hemoths or cyclops during the first few weeks of a game).
Rampart is a difficult town to defeat, but you can win providing you can hold off a fast and vicious attack. The silver pegasi can cross a battlefield easily and they come in big numbers so their first strike can mess up a perfectly planned strategy easily. Once you've dealt with them, the elves will have taken out a sizeable chunk of your army and by then, you'll have both golds and unicorns to deal with, which often means that for the next few rounds of heavy melee, you'll be allowing the elves free range at your units, which can crush most opponents and leave their army in tatters.
And Zud, if I was as great as you, I'd never lose a game!

My favorite town is the Tower because that where I play really well! Next is the rampart because it's fast to build your troops other than the Gold Dragon, I like the dendriod soldiers where they make their opponent stuck with them!

It takes no longer to build troops with rampart than it does most other races Still. And dendroids are slow, why on earth do you like them so much? Because they bind units to the ground?

I like those dendriods, when you haste them and bind those 6th or 7th level creatures like angels and partner it with dwarves it's an effective troop. Just place them close to your shooters such as sharp shooters and elves! If they attack your shooters you'll once they are stuck you can move your shooters in a safe spot. At least that's what I do and it works!

I agree eye to eye with you! It all depends on the gaming style. No town is bad when you know how to use it and win with it. I also think Castle is too overrated. Gee, the Archangels cost +3 gems in SoD!
P.S. My favourite maps are large. I never play small. This is why I like Inferno.
