Poll Question: With Or Without Upgrades?
In H3 and H5, you can upgrade your creatures, but in H1 and H4 you can't.
In H2 there are upgrades only to part of the creatures, just those that have suitable upgrade.
What do you prefer, with or without upgrades?

With upgrades - 100 %!
Of course, there are some creatures that could do without, and sometimes multiple upgrades would be fine (Golems, Dragons), but overall, the best solution is one upgrade for all units.
No upgrades killed Heroes 4 for me. Too boring.

Of course with upgrades!
Too bad that some upgrades are pretty much lame, like succubi -> succubus mistresses. Upgrades need to change the unit a bit, not only add a bit of extra hp and MAYBE 1 special..

With Upgrades is so much more interesting. Can get even more far. It would be cool to mix a feature from H4 and let the creatures have 2 alternative of upgrades. Maybe one base creature can be upgraded to a spellcaster creature or to a might creature with higher stats or something. It would be cool and make each town even more unique!

The Chain Shot is a very strong ability.
I'll give you an example: let's say you fight against humans, and the enemy leaved 1 inquisitor in the side, and he blesses your enemies.
To kill him quickly, you'll have to waste a turn of strong creature.
Instead of it, you can just shoot with the Succubus Mistresses to other strong creature and it will kill also the inquisitor.
And there are many exaples... This is a useful ability.
I don't think there are pointless upgrades in HOMM5.

Yes, I like it too.
But I think it's a little bit unbalanced.
Well, HOMM hadn't been balanced till patch 2.1 came to HOMM5.

I didn't mean that creature is bad.. I mean, come on, who's bright idea was to make it a "succubus mistress"? Maybe they should name it "succubus" and "a bigger, badder succubus" ? ~~ Some creativity, please..
(Anyone remembers "greater druids" from H2? rotfl.)

I can't imagine a heroes game without upgrades.
(I'm trying to recover, DO NOT mention that one! )
What's not to like? There is strategy involved, a set of priorities and different gameplay to spice up things. As long as something offers variety it is welcome.

they seriously need refreshing names

This seems like another "Which Heroes' Game is your favourite?" kind of thread.
Don't get me wrong, I just think that those who prefer Heroes III or V will, undoubtly, chose the "Gimme all the upgrades! The more, the merrier! " while those who prefer Heroes IV (yes, they’re out there and I’m one of them ) will say “Hell no! I like my creatures the way they were born! ”
Of course, this thread being in the Heroes V turf, I can only guess the winner of this poll…

Sometimes I think those un-original names fit well.
Master Hunter sounds great... Arch Mage and Arch Angel Are good, too.
I guess that most of those names come from missing of original names for upgrades.
But Power Lich is much much better then Arch Lich, and more original.

They are just clueless with a bad command of English!
Remember hell charger from hell stallion? And why? Because nightmare implies female and stallion male...Tell that to the rakshasas! Or the fact that during production it and its upgrade had changed 3 times their names There were numerous such incidents some of which came out even worse than they were initially.

H2 for me,.. for some creatures upgrade is forced due to lack of options so i think it would be best to give upgrades to only those creatures that will be noticeable changed by upgrade.

I enjoyed H2 but I like the H3/H5 system better.
The H4 system was ok...but the choices weren't always well balanced.
What the guy above me said sounds awesome. Have the basic units and then 2 choices for upgrades...so for example with haven you could choose which way to go for each unit...but the costs would be different...and of course the other factions would need the choices too. Maybe not even for every unit so it doesn't get too confusing but certainly for some units.

I voted H3/H5.
H4 system is ... well... boring.
H2 system and the 2 possible upgrades idea both sound very attractive, creative and interesting, but face a serious problem - balance.

I voted for with upgrades. I would hate if they did the H4 system again, it was so dull. And just as Geny said, the H2 version could possibly be unbalanced.

Well, it's up to the creators of the game to make worthwile upgrades, or to make not. As well as it's up to them to make creatures that desperatelly needs upgrade boosts, or make them already suficient
Besides, one thing must also be considered when facing the types of creature trees from Heroes 1-5. Its the numbers of levels of creatures available. For example, i didn't like much of H4 system because there were only 4 levels of creatures, and for me, 7 levels is much more interesting. Maybe u all disagree, but i would like to see a game with each town able to go up to ten levels of creatures, where the highest levels being VERY HARD to afford its dwellings, as well as very low population and high cost. But obviously, awesome creatures
Well. The Level 7's even from H3 and H5 aren't scaring and powerfull enough for me. I like those Azures and friends from H3

Born and raised with HoMM2, I enjoy the system more then the others.
I liked that Green Dragons begame red then black. Like for Dragons their are higher lvls, always a way to become more Evil... And like Hobbits are weak and bad they needed no upgrade... I know it might be a bit unbalanced but some creatures are born to get more powerful then others...
Not that I hate HoMM3 and HoMM5 system, I just see more creativity in HoMM2 system... and the system with 2 upgrades sound good... Actully you could do it with Haven Renegade and normal? like a good or evil side?
and just so we are clear: HoMM4 system was just Bad... 4 creatures was to few...

CAn you imagine an alternative upgrade for, say, hunter? Or zombie? Duh. Alternative upgrades would be fun for haven, though. I still think it would be the most fun if training racial skill could train units to corresponding renegades
