Here it goes:
Centaur captains: The best 1st level creature along with those Castle guys. Fast and durable with good attacking abilities. Their speed enables them to wait and then strike two times in a row, which is excelent for taking down early game creatures on the map.
Battle dwarfs: I like them. I leave them in the castle at first because they slow down my main hero. They come great when defending a castle against a siege. When they stack up I place them in my main heros army and use them tacticaly. They can take the counterstrike and open the way for someone with greater attacking power to make a blow or defend elves...
Grand elves: favourite shooters. So elegant... It' very important to upgrade them ASAP because their two shots are very deadly and make fighthing map creatures a lot of fun. Too bad for their waekness in defence, because they are probably the most targeted creature in the game.
Silver pegasi: good and bad. Good for their great speed which gives you the first turn in most cases and alows you to have two strikes in the row when waiting. They also make oponents spells more expensive which is defenitely a good thing. They are very week and easy to kill, but very often you get their dwellings near the castle and they guard crystal mines so when playing with Ryland (diplomacy) they will probably join you. So there are ways to keep their numbers big :-)
Dendroids: great! Extremely durable and with their special they give you great tactical possibilities. They can defend grand elves, block castle breaches in a most effective manner, attack and bind some strong units that would otherwise do a lot of unwanted damage... They are slow though so early in the game I leave them in the castle to stack up.
War unicorns: very good. Fast, strong, durable. They make good average damage (18 - 22) and have great specials. I place them in the middle of my army to protect grand elves and dendroids with magic resistance.
Gold dragons: also very good. They are strong, can deal a lot of damage, too bad they don't have maximum magic resistance and also it takes a lot of ore and crystal t upgrade them.
Buildings: Treasury: excelent! I try to build it very early to make the most of it's profit making ability.
Ponds: Very good! Resources and +2 luck in a siege. I think luck is a very good skill and normaly I pump my hero with luck as much as possible. Expert luck makes a difference on the battlefield!
Dendroid saplings and miners guild: as I said i like to stack up dwarves and dendroids in a castle so these comes very handy.
Mage guild: one of the best ones!
Overall: I place Rampart as 3rd best town in the game.
One of the things that ads up to their final grade is the atmosphere and the image of this town which makes it very enjoyable to play it. Mythology of it's creatures is probably the most known which also makes this town very friendly.

Great explanation, almost everything i would do and have.

They arent low in defense, all rampart heroes are rich at defense, but they have low HP.And therefore AI or neutrals on the map are always trying to do the most dmg they can,no matter who it is,so if u r fighting archers and u have elves and centaurs, theyll attack elves unless u place u centaurs so that they can shoot them with full arrow.Unlike AI,human players will kill anybody who will deal the most dmg to their army.So that makes rampart a very great early game caslte.

Thanx for the correction Nikita! Too bad for elves to have such low HP. Wouldn't it be great to switch HP's between elves and dwarfs? :-)

Wow there's been some impressive thread necromancy on this one. Running for 7 years!
The balance in HMM3 is so good that there really isn't a best town , its all about play style and individual preference. On that note here is my personal view of Rampart. Note I almost exclusively play single player XL maps.
It basically depends on use - I love defending with them but attacking with that army is rubbish because:
-only a single ranged unit.
-very slow Lvl 2 and 5.
-Lvl 7 imo below average.
I'd take the town and/or use the army to defend a key location but won't use on my main.

try to play online i bet that you will find it much more interesting (if you will play vs experienced players)

this is one of the best and most important units (grand elves) in game. Read threads about "How to take full crypt early" and similar

very great units. Pretty cheap and with good growth. With their help you can fight for conservatory on week 1...and with early angel Rampart is extremely strong.

dragons are not very important, at least when you play vs human - because they are expensive and usually in low quantity.

Here are my 2 cents about Rampart:
Advantages:
- An awesome start with the centaurs/elves combo
- You can easily build Unicorn Glade in week 1
- Mostly rich in resources start zone
- Logistics speciality might hero (Kyrre)
- Cheap units
- Level 5 mage guild
- Combine the facts stated above and you can easily storm your oponent
Disadvantages:
- Troops cannot take a good beating in later game (for example: defending the elves won't help you too much because after 5-6 weeks the oponent will certainly have a good counterattack prepared for them)
- Too much crystal needed for dragons (10+4+20+20), you may get unlucky and won't get too much around your castle and you'll be forced too explore further and leave your town undefended
- Treasury is only good in later game (the 5k you spend on it will not recovered as fast as you think)
- The AI will aim for your elves often
- Kinda sucky grail
Final conclusion: Fun to play in single player, good for a Blitzkrieg tactic in online games, can't take a beating later on
I give it a fair 6.5
