Disecting the Tower...

Tower is Power.

The Library is a great special building and the wall helps it out. But I like the creatures, the only one I might get rid of is the golems but they do tend to absorb alot of damage without worrying too much about spells.  I love to have titans lob lightning bolts and force the enemy to come to you.  Nagas are supurb battle tanks and mages are a good shooter, while master gremlins are my favorite 1st level creature(this only applies in the early and middle game).

well, I think I've said enough about tower, one of my favorite town.

Just one thing, IMO, the tower blacksmith is one of the most useful blacksmith of all towns: ammo cart + shooters.

And if you can, always choose me, oooop, I mean Solmyr as your main hero. Don't make him doing those scouting or resource management works. It is a humiliation.

Tower has good troops, but man, are they expensive.  With all structures except tthe Grail building, it has the most expensive creatures to buy per week of any town.  On a map that's liberal with the money, this town can take all the others down.  But on a map with few gold mines, you will die playing this town.

Creatures:
1) Gremlins. Low level shooters are extremely handy. No difference here.
2) Gargoyles. Quick units, and all around average.
3) Golems. They take a beating, but they aren't quick to get in the fight.
4) Magi. Spellcasting helpers, range attacks, no penalty through walls or in melee, ... all is good.
5) Genies. Spellcasters (Frenzy on Titans ... :shudder: ... or Nagas for that matter), quick, but not too durable.
6) Nagas. No retaliation, best damage, what is there not to like?
7) Titans. Big, range attacks, no melee penalty, won't go Berserk, ... again, what is there not to like?

Special buildings:
Library: Who wouldn't want D-Door and Implosion, Chain Lightning, Meteor Shower, and TP all in one town? (I've seen it happen. Not pretty.)
Wall of Knowledge: Useful, but not on the same level as the other +1-skill buildings.

Heroes:
Solmyr or Astral are the best by far. Solmyr's specialty is dangerous to you early and is usable at best once or twice in a battle, but it's devastating when you use it. Astral's specialty is better early but rapidly fades.

Overall: A great town, but you need plenty of cash to make it run.

Aren't Titans imune to all mind spells? Can genies cast frensy on Titans? I've never seen that.

Frenzy just changes the attack and defence, mind spells are the ones that let you controll the others actions like hypnotise and berserk.

let's not forget

about the Pendant of Negativity.  Get this and combine it with chain lightning and you can devastate an opponent with ease.

another building that is sometimes a lifesaver is the Art Merchant.  Sometimes a gamesaving art (such as the recanter's) can be purchased there.

this reminds me of our last game when you kicked my @ss with Recanters, Lightning and the air orb. Funny thing is that I had the Pendant of Negativity, just didn't put it on.

lol, SOS

That recanter's is the only reason I won that game, bud

As soon as I saw that I had a stronghold and you started with a tower I was lookin for one.  Didn't get it until I hit my utopia.  Man, was I ever grateful to see it in the arts I got from there.

That game would have ended much differently if you had been able to use your Implosion and Resurrection.  It would have been an ugly beating for Old Lichy for sure!!!

Great game, though, and it's always nice to spend the time with a person like you.  Win or lose, it's time well spent

Oh, that would explain why I can never get the Genies to cast Frenzy on the Titans. It would be scary, though. Their attack skill would be (60 + hero's attack + 1.5*hero's defense) - with a typical late-game Wizard, that's gonna be about 85-100. That ain't pretty. When I get it on the Nagas, they usually have an attack skill in the 50s or 60s, so if they attack it's devastating.

This maybe a great town but...

I lost the most games with this town. And I haven't played with it more than other towns.
I don't know maybe I'm doing something wrong...

Anyway, when Heroes III first appeared, me and my friends thought that tower was the best town by far.
But after that things kind of changed. I saw Tower, Rampart and Castle as the first towns (and Dungeon was ascending).
Now... I don't know Maybe Conflux, Rampart, Dungeon, Castle.

The thing I want to point out is that Tower constantly decreased in my eyes (in terms of it's value).

And especially since almost all of my games are on random mediums, the chance of getting titans are not that big. On some games you don't even get the upgrade for arch magi while at other castles you got all the 1-6 lvl troops with upgrades.

So the thing is they are too expensive!

Tower, from a statistical point, should be at least the 2nd best town.  What happens though when it gets played?  The question still perplexes me.

The creatures look great on paper...

Master gremlins:  Is there another level one in the game that someone would rather have in the beginning?

Obsidian gargoyles:  Solid, solid, solid.  Upgrade has a 9 speed and 16 hit points help to keep'em going as guardians.

Iron Golems: They are exactly what the dendroids should have been...tanks.  Yes they're slow...but everyone knows that with 3 ranged creatures, the tower won't lose many shooting matches.  So, you are assured that your opponent will come to you.

Arch-magi:  Solid, respectable ranged.

Master genies:  Great punch...no staying power.  40 hit points for a hand-to-hand level 5 kinda sux, doesn't it?  Spells could be useful, but I've had too many 'protection from water' spells cast on me.  Spell books could have been better.

Naga Queen:  Absolutely fearsome.  The most devastating level 6 in the game, with a pricetag to prove it.  Her one maddening drawback?  Speed.

Titan:  I'm not sure why, but I have no respect for the Titan.  On paper, he's great.  40-60 damage...no melee penalty...launches death from where he stands.  What's the problem?  He's too expensive for his stats.

And that seems to be the problem with the Tower...the units are too expensive.  I can't count how many times I've tried to buy out my castle only to run short of money with not even half of my mages bought, never mind anyting else below them.

Also... and no one has touched upon this.  The resource cost for the magi is ridiculous.  The designers took their cost straight from of Heroes II.  Magi were a level 5 in that game, just one away from the top.  No other level 4 comes even close to their resource cost.  If you play on poor maps on 160 or higher, you WILL get stuck.

What about the heroes?  Well, there should have been an alchemist with specialty archery, but nooo....  As far as the alchemists go, I suppose that Neela is the best, though I don't like to have my main with scholar.

As for the wizards, well they catch your eye but then when you try them they don't work.  Don't believe me?  Solmyr's specialty is a one-hit wonder in battles against other players. Cyra starts with diplomacy but you'll be hard-pressed to afford creatures that offer to join up with you.  Astral's hypnotize is a joke.  The most solid wizard is Malekith and he isn't even a wizard.  My suggestion is... use a Warlock or an Elementalist.
The structures could have been better.  Of course Tower has the artifact merchant...tell me when you can afford to even build it.  I would prefer +1 power to +1 knowledge...and the observatory is an absolute waste. But, the library does rock.

All in all, I get a kick out of the tower.
Cosmetically, it looks great.  Where else can you start your level 7 for a mere 5000 gold?  With 3 ranged units and a horde of spells it certainly has the most unique feel to it.  IMHO, for want of gold, the Tower languishes in 5th place for its overall town strength.

'Toweres are the Bomb '

I disagree with that totaly.
Tower has titans, Magi, and gremlins wich all shoot and can take off nearly any creature with medium creature stacks
and plus

'Just one thing, IMO, the tower blacksmith is one of the most useful blacksmith of all towns: ammo cart + shooters.'

'The Library is a great special building and the wall helps it out.'

Tower is perhaps the most knowledgable town there is
and combined with the library the mage guilds are the best.

sure tower can be great if you know how to use it.
Really great creatures but very exensive.
Mages are great reduce the cost of spells & love those masters.
I have to agree that ammo cart is worthless because I dont remember one single time I needed it. (except with medusas)

Every town has its good/bad stuff. Its hard to say that there is a "best town" since every town is different.

Personally i dont like Tower much tho, Those titans takes to long to get. And the only unit i like is naga queens.

Like OT said: Tower is Power

We all know that it has all expensive structures and units in the game but in a well balanced and XL/L maps they are one of the best choice for a town. The most ranged attack troops in the game. I will focus mainly on upgraded units for some obvious reason.

Creatures:

Titans are the Ultimate shooters in the game. They are expensive but durable although they suffer ranged penalty. If you have an archery skill (Like Orin) or an artifact like the golden bow or precision spell or frenzy spell. They will give the titans an advantage. They have no melee penalty gives full damage on hand to hand combat, immune to mind spells. Slow but you use their speed as your tactic! They are the Tower's tower!

Naga Queens are the ultimate Tank, they will challenge almost any creature in the game. Very good Attack/Defense/Damage, excellent HP and the best thing is no retaliation ability. Use them to eliminate huge stacks.

Archmages - An excellent ranged troop with good attack values and damage. Combined with the Magi's other two specials is no penalty for shooting behind castle walls.

Iron Golem - Average speed and takes only 25% damage from magic damage spells, good guard for range troops. They can take punishments for they have good defense and attack skill. They are the tower's sheild!

Obsidian Gargoyle, A very fast flyer and strong unit overall. Best used to attack opponents' shooters and picking off depleted stacks. Best used with expert tactics! Use them as your decoy!

Master Gremlins - The only level 1 shooter in the game, this upgrade is mandatory right away. As a shooter, these guys suddenly are pretty powerful. They are great for clearing wandering stacks in the early game. Imagine torosars tactics surrounded by your melee attackes in the early game to challenge melee opponents. Good decoys in big combats too.

Spells

Tower has the best spells compared to other castle IMHO. Town Portal which everyone really likes. Chain Lightning for mass unit damage. Implosion really the best spell in eliminating huge stacks IMHO! Also the library gives more spells available to learn which is an advantage for the hero. Summon Earth and Air Elementals are handy for decoys in huge battle. All in all tower's guild just kicks ass!

Hero's

My preferred main hero's are either of the three IMHO:

Torosar - The only DWARF WIZARD (If anyone noticed) and has well balanced skills when built properly. Although his mysticism doesn't really fit to him but his tactic skill is effective organizing/positioning your troops when the battle starts. His specialty in artillery gives him another effective shooter unit in the game as a bonus. Excellent Might hero for tower.

Solmyr - The famous and favorite magic hero for it's chain lightning specialty. Deadly hero with it's astounding magic skill, great use for L/XL maps. Nothing I can say more... I think the best Magic Hero in HOMM III (for what I think)!

Orin (Knight) - Best choice for a tower Hero. Use as primary if available. I wish he was a Tower hero for he's specialty in Archery skill makes him the perfect hero for the Tower. Come's with Leadership skill too another bonus for tower's creature's good moral for an extra turn or for combining  other town's or neutral creatures. Built tough! Excellent Attack and Defense skill. Nothing to say more just use him and see.

Tower is the best town but not if it were in heroes II because all the flying creatures would get there to attack the titans mages and gremlins in one shot whereas in heroes III they take atleast 2 turns to get to the towers shooters giving tower the upperhand with two shots.

Hmmm... actually, the Tower town needs outside sources in order to generate enough money to buy a week's worth of creatures (plus the gems for the titans) However, I usually end up having two armies: Gremlins, Archmagi, Genies, Nagas, and maybe Titans. The second army consists of Golems and Gargoyles, and early on Titans. The first army is good for sieges and walkers, whereas the second army is good against shooters/flyers and in defending for sieges. The first army I usually use for conquering, the second for defending.

Because the creatures are so expensive, I usually leave the melee troops (with the excepton of nagas) unbought so if I need them for a siege I can just buy them then.
