Poll Question: When did you start playing Heroes?
Personally I did start playing Heroes in 98 when the "Price of Loyalty" was out. I was totally absorbed, and had never been so addicted to anything before. I still play it and find Heroes 2 the best of all old games.
When did you start and how did you hear of it? And what was your impression the first time?
Hope to hear many nostalgic look backs

One of my friends had Heroes 1. We always played computer in his house, and I remember we found the game to be really fun. My favorites were the Trolls back then. This was not too long before Heroes 2 was released, which was probably lucky, because otherwise we might have grown tired of the game (Heroes 1 was not THAT great).
Heroes 2, of course, completely blew us away. That was such a great game. I guess the rest is history, as they say. Heroes 3, of course, topped Heroes 2 many times - the graphics were just so amazing (back then). I remember seing the Castle town screen first time and just thinking WOW. That made me hooked for some 3 or 4 years without break. Then finally came Heroes 4, and I will save you my oppinions about that. And now, Heroes 5 is starting to own up to the expectations. Having played some more lately, I come to realize that we should probably give the Nival guys more credit for the game than we do.

I play since heroes2, which is IMO the best heroes game, too. Heroes3 might be addictive, but it had much worse atmosphere, less magic. I never liked H4. Heroes 5 seems a very good game, with a few improvements it would be much better than heroes3. It still needs some flavour (more towns, spells, arties, creatures, adventure objects etc) though, because even with HoF it seems a bit sterile. I hope the coming patches+second expansion will fix that.

I started playing Heroes II, because two of my friends had played it already and insisted that I would play it too. I was eager to try, even though didn't know what to expect. And believe me I still remember one early fight from the first game of my life. I was Wizard and having an army consisting of some boars and halflings and rocks. I went against Archmages, hehe. They were divided into 4 stacks, and they told me to hit the archmage in a way I would block the others from shooting. I really didn't know what it ment and flew to attack an Archmage right in front. I remember them being like "oh no, now you are going to loose. for sure" But luckily I didn't as the Rocs can take a lot of damage. I was so proud of my combat skills
Later we tried Heroes 1 too, and it was nice. But we just couldn't help laughing at the fat purple Dragons. Dragons were soooo cool in Heroes 2 and there they looked like...well. But I liked the little animations of the creatures in the Dwellings, that way you would always know where to get each creature.
I played Heroes 3 even more than Heroes 2, if that is possible. As it was better in more than one way, the strategy evolved considerably. There was no going back, and Heroes 3 is perhaps still my favourite (Heroes 5 has chances, but at this age I don't play that much anymore) But there will always be the biggest nostalgic feel with Heroes 2, the music and the atmosphere

Heroes 2 was the first for me... and it was really nice. I even played finished the Roland campaign back then ... It was a great game, and it had hot seat so it was one of the first games I played against human opponent.
Heroes 3 was a total succes, even though it didnt hit me from the first time ... My first try was with Fortress and the town theme didnt atract me too much . But after a while it grew on me , and became my favourite game topping H2. I didn't play campaigns at all, and probably I never will do that again, but it was the first game with online multi player action for me
Heroes 4 ... tried it ... very few , it didn't have an impact.
Heroes 5, managed to surpass Heroes 3 in my top games. It is far better than any heroes until now ... If only it had might & magic hero for each race , it would be perfect! But even as it is, it is incredible. The abilities are simply awesome add-on, and so are the special racial skills ! It seems like every race has a very well defined identity , and orientation ... and lets not forget the beautifull features like quick combat and simultan turns ! What more could you ask from a turn based game ?! Best heroes till now , that's for sure !

Started with Heroes 3, actually, and very much enjoyed the atmosphere it had (although I wished there were more options with the editor).
Heroes 4 was a complete set-back, and I think the majority agrees this was a complete failure, and just pathetic. Aside from only 4 levels, seriously, mixing Inferno with Necropolis is just.. BAD... You don't do that, it's just wrong.
Although I don't own Heroes 5 I've played it against a friend a few times and plan on getting it, when I can get a better PC for it. I love the atmosphere of this game even better than heroes 3 given the more cartoonish style, it brings you more easily into that fantasy world. I also plan on trying out Heroes 1 and 2 since I like old school style.

That's a pity actually, Towerlord. The Armageddon's Blade campaigns were amazing. That's the only time the campaigns have really interested me in terms of gameplay - they were seriously challenging, and every map was extremely well made - no boring filler maps like in half of the Heroes 5 campaigns.

I grew up with a big brother, who made me play Heroes Of might and magic II ! I was blown away, I was a little nerd And my brother taught me all my tactics and everything i needed to know! Oh, We did spent a lot of time behind the screen...
Then Came: Heroes Of might and magic III! Well, I actully only bought it a couple of months ago, but I borrowed it from time to from people I knew and you get addicted to that game. So when I had i played it day and night! And well it is the best game, but thats only because of the gameplay... (though HoMM2 is better, beccause of the great charm)
I borrowed HoMM4 from friends too, but I HAVE NEVER WON A GAME!! I found that game so god damn hard and well the gameplay suck... and sorry... Don't like it
I started to watch HoMM5 a couple months before it came out and was over exited to finally play it again(after the failure of HoMM4) .. It looked great with the new technology we got now a days.. And well its good, but As doomforge said, its need a bit more... But well atleast better then HoMM4 ...

So it already seems most people started playing with H2. But that was after all the best game. I was both impressed and dissapointed with H3. The map and town graphics were awsome then, but the creature/battle graphics rather blurry and bad. The music and sound quality was not either so good in H3. When H4 caome I couldn't believe how they could make the graphics so inconsistent and bad-looking. H4 had after my opinion only a few good things about it like the skill system and that you actually were allowed to save during a combat.

To tell the truth it was H2 for me too but it wasn't then that I began heroes. A friend of mine had given to a mutual friend H2 and we had played once just to try it out. My memories are dim but I remember that I chose wizard(which actually proved to be my favourite later), that we started on grass which had a memorable music and that I first lost to some pixies! I didn't know how to build in town nor understand how big the stacks were! Needless to say we were both clueless and never finished it.
It was two years later when I was reintroduced to the series by my younger neighbour when we moved house. He had H3 and I didn't have a pc so we would play all for one at his house for a time! Since there was school in the way we could only play a few times per week but I was instantly addicted. My first town was necropolis(yay! ) with Tamika, another interesting choice though my favourite became castle(which I originally despised for the unoriginal units, lol!) Soon after I got my pc and started learning quickly. The expansions followed and I have some funny memories. I still remember when I first saw conflux on the map freedom, when I found out that moats hurt in SoD, finding out the new neutrals...By then I introduced another friend so it was mostly multiplayer. When there was little more to learn I moved to the campaigns which made me wonder what role Gem had played in the succession wars and what was this Enroth I kept hearing. The armageddon's blade campaign was truly excellent as were the other maps-say Mutare!
I ordered H2 from a guy that sells copies and soon found out that H2 was actually more addictive than its offspring with new things to learn and a different feeling, more magical. I remember that I could 'feel' how strong a hit was without seeing the damage just by the stats and how big a stack was. In H2 this feeling was very different if you can understand what I mean. The units were cartoonish but felt very solid and I loved my archmages and titans shrugging off blows and killing huge stacks on their own! It also had the best-looking phoenix, elegant and swift. Didn't get many multiplayer games with it as my neighbour found it silly though I can claim to have some skill with it.
About that time I started collecting the heroes chronicles and began liking Tarnum the immortal protector. They were rather easy though clash of the dragons(my favourite) and the final chapter remedied that. Only before H5 came out I learnt of the two obscure episodes that were downloadable from 3do but now I have completed them all.
It was no surprise that my jaw drooped when I saw Gelu about to cross swords with Kilgor as I knew immediately what that meant. Believe me that was one of my biggest surprises and not in a good way...Once again I got immersed and started multiplayer with my friends. Only soon after I began to see shortcomings: No cinematics, bad implementation of features, no unlocked campaigns and the fact that I could not play it as much as H3. The expansions totally ruined my mood and it was the first time I was TOO bored to finish a game. Winds of war was the crappiest add-on ever...Some campaign maps even looked empty...Jeez. Anyway by then only me and my neighbour still kept playing as the others had abandoned it but I had grown too strong for him that he eventually gave up.
I thought it was the end of heroes until I heard the rumours about ubi. Soon enough I was on the lookout for new tidbits of information and can still recall when ubi would give away the factions, heroes, units...The idiots kept changing the names until they found the worst version...After the long wait I saw i was quite lucky: My exams were postponed() and a week after I got H5 my father got me a new computer so I could run it smoothly and without without 30 secs for that damn autosave! Those who are around for some time should know my feelings about what came next, the good and bad.
After all i think I've said enough for one day!

Nice annecdotes Elvin. Funny to hear someone mention the Heroes Chronicles ... what the hell was that about? I bought the lot of them later on sale, but only played the two of them because I was so annoyed with the crappy storyline and extremely easy maps that I didn't bother for the rest of them (but the green one with the Dragons was nice?). I remember I played the blue one (Masters Of The Elements) and was so annoyed with the "funny" () dialogue that I actually yelled at my screen on occasion.

Well if you take into account that you can get fast EVERY SINGLE spell in that one even if the missions weren't ridiculously easy it would still be a piece of cake. The dialogue...Well Tarnum was a bit of an @ss on that one so I can understand you. That was a mini flashy campaign with little depth.
Clash of the dragons describes the invasion of Mutare who had enslaved all the dragons to her will, even the green ones. Add a bit of sharpshooter action, azure dragons, a bit of romance, a spying game and Mutare's ending.Mostly story-driven and with competitive maps towards the end.
The last chapter continues from there and we learn that Gelu plan to find the fabled sword of frost somewhere in Vori and destroy it. Naturally the two swords together would destroy the world but he is stubborn and goes on anyway. Tarnum has no choice but to become an overlord to rule over the dungeon armies as Mutare's passing has left everything in chaos and find the sword first. There's another in the game, Kija the wife of Kilgor who plans to become the ahem, predominant wife if she gives him the sword.
It's funny as he pretends to be mad(so as to be feared) and butchers passing harpies, dresses a minotaur with a dress and talks to his mother that isn't there! Long story short, he spares kija and she manages to escape and get it first...Did I mention that you fight Gelu in possesion of armageddon's blade?
These two were quite interesting.

Lets see...I believe that I started playing around '98 or '99. One of my friends had HoMM2 and thats when I was first introduced to the series. Then a little while after that he got HoMM3. I liked that one very much. Then we were both planning to get HoMM4 when it came out, but we kind of forgot and neither of us have it. Then, back in June '06 I was browsing a website...ign.com I think and saw HoMM5. In August I bought it and have played it a lot ever since.

my friend loaned me heroes 1, and I really enjoyed it. I can't remember how I started the others, but I know that I spent hours on Heroes III. My friend is evil, he likes heroes IV.
I bought Heroes V and I've never looked back.
Heroes V is a truly incredible game. The Graphics may be a bit cartoony, but they feel very real, in the end. The storyline is interesting, and acually made me cry when Alaron passed into the Judgement of Sylanna. The music is incredible.

I started with H2, although it was never very much. H3 I LOVED and spent so many hours of my life on that game its kinda ridiculous. I still think H3 is probably the best of the series, athough with a bit more details like Doomforge mentioned (arties, spells, towns) H5 could become better - at present it's not quite rich enough. The only other thing that annoys me about H5 is the stupid hero auto attacks lol, why can my hero run across the map and hit something with his sword and then magically be back without anyone ever taking a swing??
Baniaque - LOL.

I am a Kings Bounty startup. I have to admit to not enjoying it very much but then came H1 and I completely loved that game - it was amazing, I then actually skipped H2 (Much to my dissapointment). H3 came along and blew me away completely - I was absolutely in love with Fortress, H4 I still have and allow my son to play. While it was not as good as H3 I am not as opposed to its existence as my others are and spent quite a number of hours playing it.
H5 is awesome and I love it. I think that I preferred H3 campaigns but H5 creatures and heroes are much more interesting to me. Overall my joint favorite with H1 which will always have a place in my heart.
