Great battles
As I've mentioned somewhere, I played a game against a great haven player with dungeon. well, I lost But the game was probably the most close one in my life. It was a LAN game, so we took a lot of screenies during the play
I creeped fast and gained a powerful hero quickly.. the creep battles were easy as usual.
I decided not to attack early, though. It would be good, I guess, but I wanted warlock's luck badly, and got it, unfortunately, on level 18 ~~ Bah. I accumulated a lot of powerful arties, though. Take a look:
And here's my enemy's hero. THird month. If you wonder why his army is so "small", well, we had a nice week of disease throughout the game, and my enemy lost majority of the units he kept in the dwellings, bwahaha
Our first clash was quite short. Well, regular haven army is ridiculously powerful. Fortunately, empowered lucky implosion is even more ridiculous
Fun, ey?
Well, anyways, I had to run at this point:
I was unlucky and lost all the secondary castles to enemy scouts before the fight, though. So, I rehired, bought some creatures and realized that he didn't reatreat to ressuply.. he decided to come for me ~~
Before he reached me, a week of life started. Bwahaha, double hydras! I was extremely low on cash, but I managed to buy all of them.
He didn't have an impressive army, and the griffins were long gone due to my implosions at the previous battle. So, I thought I will hold on. Before he teleported the paladins to my town, implosion washed them away, angels fell next..
sorry, dude. No bonus.
When I finally IMPLODED the last stack, the inquisitors away, and began to celebrate the victory.. that damn GUARDIAN ANGEL triggered 4 angels revived. Not much, so I thought "bah, one icebolt and it's over anyway". Well, it would be that way, but just look how unlucky I got..
NO MANA ]
He immediately divineguidanced the angels, and they got two consecutive lucky strikes at my hydras. And with one scout remaining and enemy hero's turn, it all ended.
Conclusions? Well, I waited too long, and my enemy was unlucky, too (week of disease, no antimagic at TWO light-orientated towns, no magic-protection artifacts at merchants). Probably faster attack would end the game. He risked a lot, too (he could just go back, ressuply after the week of life, and go back to destroy me - he had 10000k gold, I had 4k ~~)
But the game was quite fun :]

Can I ask what map you played?
Also, what spells exactly did you have? Trust me, if it was Meteor Shower, you should've used it instead of Implosion.
But I like the fact that you waited long -- it made it a much more interesting game, right?
but usually I'm disappointed when someone loses against Haven, because I simply have something against marksmen and Paladins (and I'm talking about the appereance and all that).. I like to see them smashed

It's funny how Dungeon is disadvantaged in his own castle - meteor shower gets so much weaker.

Maybe haven's training wasn't too nerfed! True, a very close battle and while you risked it you were unlucky not to get a decent knowledge artie. If not for that 3 mana the archangels would be toast with your spellpower. The guy knew how to play as he chose a charging tactic vs your destructive spells and kept a failsafe with guardian angel. Always keep an eye on that one, it happened on me once I won't let my guard down twice!

the map was divided loyalties
I had no meteor shower, unfortunately.. would be great here.. I could buy tome of destruction at a certain point, though. Perhaps that would be a better choice.
It was quite scary to see how those 2 stacks of paladins kill everything in one hit, by the way :X
I think I will go with more stacks of hydras next time, since it worked well in the castle defense (1 would have died from one lucky blow of archangels, three would stall quite a while..) I will kick out furies and assassins, I guess.

You should've protected your shooters or furies better, placing them in corners and Hydras next to them -- this way his Palas would need to kill the hydras first..

Against haven minos are even better tanks than hydras because haven will reach 2x2 hydras with palas and griffins but they won’t reach cornered minos. Even if they finally do reach them they can only attack with ONE 2x2 stack only.
Then, this minos' attacking 2x2 stack can be weakened by Implosion so that it will have to choose between:
a) doing sucky damage and keep minos safe from other 2x2 stacks
b) move its ass doing no damage but giving attack opportunity to other 2x2 haven stacks.

Actually, I care for hydras more, and I want furies to protect them I know it sounds ridiculous, but the longer the Hydras are alive, the more safe I am. If furies can take the first blow, my enemy wastes 3k damage since only 1k damage is necessary to kill them. After that, implosion destroys the stack and hydras are still safe and sound. Otherwise, the hydras will die, and furies are so fragile that even without paladins the enemy will kill them in one hit with any unit.
Perhaps I should consider taking attack->tactics for defense purposes.

But you waste a creature's potential, just like you do with Inferno (horned demons).. that is not my advice though
also consider you hero's Attack attribute as well, it would be very efficient with Furies.

Oh, I've used them. They killed 2-3 palas per strike (3-4 with luck). It was full pop of furies. impressive? No. Even my att couldn't help them. Guys, when will you realize that endgame furies do next to nothing when it comes to damage? Even if they were alive for full combat, they wouldn't kill too much. Hasted paladins had the same initiative anyway, and the battle without the major focus on implosion would be over after 15 seconds.

Of course 80 Blood furies did that damage.. How can you expect more from only 14000 gold? I still think that they were worth their price for the damage.

OH i have just reminded of another bug. Tome of destuction doesnt give you empowered spells when you have the ability.
Unfortunately theres no room for attack-> tactics and if there even was id take defense/leadership or anything which is not attack

Probably, it is better to place 2 pairs of shadow matriarchs instead of furies and assassins. They all die with one blow anyway but matriarchs will at least cast slow on paladins. Furies are better than a pair of Matriarch but why waste them when they fit hit and run tactic/lameness so nicely..

Slow doesn't work because iquisitors will counter-haste it. And even if you slow one stack.. well, he has a lot of killer-stacks. I'm still trying to figure out the best "tankish" army composition and placing.

Third month?!?! Too slow IMHO... what was your opponent doing for all that time so that he only ended up level 17? Anyway, like you say you probably would have won with a rush.

This map has a lot of creeps that give a lot of exp, but they are mostly underground And I started there, and my enemy obviously wanted to start on grass to avoid movement penalty (warlocks have no movement penalty underground, a huge bonus for them since most of the good things is usually underground. So, I could farm my exp faster then he could. Also, from what he said after the battle, the closest gate to underground was protected by swarm of sprites and he didn't wanted to lose his precious marksmen to wasp swarm, bwahahah
besides, just as TheDeath said: it's hard to get 20th level on this map.Seriously.
