Dungeon Keeper

I don't know if there already is a Dungeon Keeper thread, and even if there is, it deserves another one
I believe you all encountered this game during your lifetime. A perfect mixture of strategy, simulation and opportunity to torture elves, knights and fairies in dozens of excruciatingly fun ways... However, awesome gameplay is but a pale shadow compared to definitely THE BEST VOICEACTING EVER SEEN IN A GAME; I am of course talking about the Mentor, played fantasticly by Richard Ridings. Perfectly evil voice coupled with majesticly written text just knocked me off my feet.
Memorable quotes (they'll stick around my mind forever...):

"Waterdream Warm... A region of pointless frolicking and endless pleasure. No one here understands the true meaning of suffering and random, shocking violence meted out arbitrarily."

"Snugglebell... The folk of Snugglebell worship the common rabbit. Flopping bunnies are encouraged to hop around the fields surrounding the hamlet, bringing happiness, love and more bunnies to the entire area."

"Wishfale... This region of dreaming underlings is ruled by the beautiful lady Catherine. She is kind, and fair, and doesn't imprison or torture her subjects... for some reason."

"Moonbrush wood... A forest town with a welcoming population. Demons and the legions of Hell could ride in, and would probably be offered cheap loggings and a night of good cheer in a warm, cosy tavern."

"Buffy Oak... A small location where people simply sit around and enjoy each others company. They talk, laugh, and sing without ever arguing, drawing daggers and dying in a gurgling rush of blood. Hah. A truly bizarre place."

Etc. It's not that great if you can't hear Richard Ridings pronouncing it, but I'm sure this will bring back some nice memories to those who heard it...

Hey,

- I can only agree that this game is memorable. I have played it several times, with different approches. But the most fun way to play Dungeon Keeper 1 is to actually let the AI make some of it's more crucial moves before you act. And by that I mean, let it come close...real close before you make your countermove(s). And whilst waiting, wreck havoc with your "hand" and to place I-cannot-stand-you creatures in the same room...or simply...build your treasury so that each and everyone has to walk to the same spot to collect their "payment". Great fun.

- As for DK2..I have to say that this didnt have that same effect on me as DK1 had. I really can't explain why that is, God knows it's much ...MUCH harder in DK2.

Well DK2 introduced the My Pet Dungeon system which allowed endless experiments on strategy, building and of course bullying your creatures to the verge of existance. I also had the feeling that DK2 is somewhat brighter and some things were clearer in it. However DK1 has that 'something' that just keeps you playing on and on and on until you vomit or butcher your family and commit suicide...

My dad likes that game, and he even bought it too, and he is pretty good at it.

I took your advice and downlo... bought Majesty today and though it's a good game I don't think it's even close to DK. Besides, isn't a point of making a fantasy town to make it small but packed with action, functionality etc? The building allowance circles are too large for this and you can only make spread villages...

I did. The Northern expansion, it's called. It's better; more maps and stuff. But I got pissed about the first unlockable mission, when elves kidnap your son.
I mean, they're ELVES! The last thing you expect from them is to kidnap your son (especially when you're a good guy).
Plus, if you try to beat them by force, it's almost impossible...

I always found it kind of odd when I was informed: "Your creatures are upset because they have been tortured." (Derrrrr?)

Damn that game was awesome. In fact, I'm getting it out and playing it right now.

Well, in majesty world, elves are not clishe-nobles, they are bards, rogues, thieves (they are somewhat of a mixture between ranger and rogue classes)

I remember that map, its quite hard, but i think it becomes easy once you realize what troops to use...

First thing to build is temple to Krypta, since priestesses will raise skeletons, which have extremely high dodge stats and thus elves rarely even scratch them.
Using Priestesses and Warriors only makes a good start.

All norther expansion maps are quite hard, and require experience with the game.. .unlike original ones which were pretty easy (except the extremely uber hard last mission).
I think its good for a game, since for comparison, i beat dungeon keeper 2 in the first run, never lost a map for whole campaign.

Why haven't I thought of that?
I think I've finally been brainwashed by "Iron Man" (tuuh tuuh tuu-ruu-tuuh TUruRUruRUruruh tu-ruh tuh)... I listen to that song like 7 times per day lately...
I guess my all-time favourite DK quote is from DK2 - the infamous "It's payday"... You can just sense the narrator's ironic grin...

I'm tempted to install and play it again

As you can see from my signature, I'm playing online version of majesty (the one where you play as one of the heroes from the game)... as you can see ATM, I'm ranked 88th among the elves

However, since this is DK thread after all, i should mention some things about it as well

Dont yo uthink that Horny is TOOUBERSUPERMUCH powerfull?
I mean, its ok for him to slaughter random monsters with easy, but cmon, he kills final boss and stone guardians without a sweat... imho it made the game too easy to include invincible monster to your cause,... i prefered him in DK1

Well that kinda is Horny's point... He goes around and pwns stuff...
If you want a challenge, play without summoning him. No one is forcing you to summon him.

True, but that would be same as not using level 7 units in heroes..
I still think it should have been much harder campaign...
DK 1 was more balanced i think.

Believe it or not, I've never tried these games. But after reading several positive DK reviews and witnessing firsthand the catchy gameplay of Bullfrog's Theme Hospital, I'm willing to give this series a try. 1 and possibly 2 are currently on my really, really, really, really, really small computer game wishlist.

Hi,

- Well,GG, your in for a treat, as for the DK1 that is ( I still have to play a bit more DK2 to be commenting on that.).

- You can get an interview here, with one of the baddies in the game, but also one of the slightly harder creatures to keep track on ( even at lvl 1 ). Also, there is a German fella that has a 7+ min video on YouTube, playing a DK2 scenario, check it out at will.
