Well, I dug out an old demos CD and tried DK1 for the first time today. Yep, the game is quite addicting once you learn the ropes. Apart from some odd, inexplicable crashes I encountered, I loved the experience. Maybe I'll buy the retail version someday.

Inhabit a creature

You can inhabit creatures and I liked to torture the girl and hear her moan.  The voice over was really spooky.
...
I played Majesty with my wife and the game went on forever.  No direct control over the army, you placed reward flags so they would gain experience.  Each NPC had a unique name and we had cemeteries all over.

Basicly every game made by Bullfrog was good.

The title should say most of the atmosphere of the game: Explore the underworld, grow your reign bigger, provide the creatures of the darkness what they want and they will obey you and serve you in great numbers. Kill your underground rivals by destroying their Hearts of the Dungeon, and conquer the kingdoms of pure humans, slaughtering and burning to ashes.

As people stated - You grow you dungeon, seek and gather gold, gather creatures (which cannot be directly controlled as in a regular RTS, only posessing creature gives You perfect controll), made warlock's / other creatures research spells, train Your creatures, and finally - battle your opponents army's.

For all the software-render haters:
At some time an openGL patch for DK appeared. As all games in those times openGL made the graphics blurry, but it was stil beautifull.

Can't be classified really... Something between RTS and management simulation, with elements of RPG and even FPS.

And adds elite creatures which look slightly differently than original ones (Goblin is slightly armoured, mistress has smaller bra.....).

They require special room layouts tho.

he kills final boss and stone guardians without a sweat...

Point to note: The Reaper is the ONLY thing that can kill the Stone Guardians in any reasonable time-the things have massive health and armour, and can basically wipe out an entire dungeon's worth of fully-trained creatures through sheer attrition.

....Majesty, eh?  Hmmm...Is it truly 'like' Dungeon Keeper?

They cannot kill any creatures because they cannot leave their "cage". So its pretty straightforward. Summon horny when you are ready and its game over for good guys. Not a single level was challenging and i find that a biggest minus for the game. Sure, there were interesting ones, but never hard ones.

And i prefer Majesty to Dungeon keeper. But if you liked one, you will surely like the other.

Oh man. Just when I get used to the notion of The Witcher 2, Dragon Age 2, Mass Effect 3, and Fable 3... Poof! Duke Nukem Forever and a new Dungeon Keeper.

No life for me this year, it seems.

The only thing they'll be missing is Richard Ridings.

EDIT
Kinda weird, though, that you're actually building stuff to lure in heroes instead of accommodating monsters.

Tried out Dungeons today, started the campaign and basically got what I expected.

It's nowhere near DK, of course. It's got quite a few irritating bits.

The goblins (almost identical in purpose and mechanics to DK imps) are taking too long to dig due to only one being able to mine a tile at a time. They're also constantly running to your overlord to give him the 1 gold piece they dug out, which is approximately 5 times per tile. I'd rather leave the bloody coins lying there but there's no way to tell them that. There's also no slapping involved.

There's almost no creep management; no bile demons farting around and eating chickens, no lairs and hallways brimming with all sorts of creeps going their way, doing all kinds of crap. All monsters except goblin workers simply spawn out of pentagrams you put around to expand your building ability, and stand there indefinitely, waiting for a hero or something to come by. Which is sort of sad to see. The game's centered around pleasing heroes, not minions, and that's a notable shift that makes the entire dungeon simply feel less alive.

While we're at heroes, it's also sort of tiresome to have your dungeon overlord constantly hiding behind a wall while a hero fills his pockets with your gold (in order to fill his joy bar, which makes him more profitable to kill) and then quickly jumping out and slaying him before he leaves the dungeon with your money. It's kind of a chore, especially with more than one hero entrance to your dungeon. You find yourself running around, stumbling over bats and goblins, trying to play whack-a-hero instead of laying back and being awesome.

The game also feels clumsy and crashes randomly every once in a while, though I don't know if it's just my PC.

Finally, Richard Ridings has, of course, been replaced with a generic goblin advisor pretty much like the one from Overlord, just a bit more fashionable. That's not a big deal, though. It's just my personal crush on Ridings causing my heart to break every time I play an evil mastermind and there are none of his comments around to make me really love my job.

There's other stuff that I preferred in the Keeper franchise, but let's talk about the good sides for a bit.

First off, the game is brimming with cute humor which will, if not make you laugh, at least put a smile on your face every once in a while. The bright atmosphere of dark sarcasm is all around you, like in the DKs. The resource system is a bit more complex, with heroes' souls, prestige and stuff; and there are dozens of gimmicks to put around to make your dungeon seem like a more joyful place. Bookshelves, hanging skeletons, coffins, creepy braziers and other decor you put around, complete with cheerful tooltips, makes up at least a little for the seeming lack of, well, life in your dungeon. The graphics are dated but I like them, especially due to how much I love and support small developers and all the things they manage to do with their meager budgets (compared to all the monsters of gaming today).

All in all, it's an alright game, and a fun past-time; I recommend you try it out, but don't expect no Dungeon Keeper 3.
