H2 MOD
Along with few forum members on celestial heavens forum, I'm in a process of creating a small mod/patch for H2.
Thoughts on balance changes that should be made are welcome.
So far editable are: building costs, creature costs and stats, spell costs and stats. But we are finding new possibilities from time to time.
NOTE: this is made simply for fun and to refresh an old game, it will be separate .exe file and will in no way interfere with standard H2 installation.
So far supported version is H2Gold v2.1 (should be the same as POL 2.1 afaik)

I fully support the idea.
HOMM2 needs to be rebalanced, epecially the buildings and creatures costs. There's no much need to change the creatures. Maybe to make Knight's creatures a bit stronger and to add some hit points to the Phoenix. Eventhough they are not balanced, I suggest to live the Ghosts as they are, it's much more fun this way.

Well, that's opportunity to execute this great idea. And I'm sure yasmiel will be glad to get support, even after four months.
Modding HOMM2 shouldn't be harder than modding HOMM3.
It's going to be a bit hard though, since I don't think anyone has done that before, atleast on HC.

Yes, but a person loses interest in something if nobody gives any support for their idea. Four months is a long time, and since nobody responded it's likely to have been given up on at this stage. Anyway I hope Yasmiel goes ahead with it if he has the time. I don't play Heroes II much any more but a mod would reawaken my interest. It should be harder to mod Heroes II than Heroes III I think, as there aren't any tools that I know of for making files that work in the game's data packs like DefMaker or anything... But good luck to him if he decides to do it.

The thread has not been active here for a long time, but we discussed it in another forum quite frequently.
However, since all modding was done by simple hex editing, it was quite limited, and in the end i was only able to change these:
-----------------------------------
Creature stats, growth, costs
Building costs
Hero primary stats, chances for each class to get them on level up
Spell names, chances to appear (unfortunately, not the damage, but at least spells could be banned from guilds)
Various texts, descriptions, credits and other not much useful data.
-----------------------------------
I've made few versions of modded file for interested people but it's pretty much done now since nothing new can be changed.

Hey, I wonder, if it is possible to add an upgrade to few units (like peasants - 2nd, swordsman - 3rd or crusader - 3rd) therefore add some new creatures?? I'm asking about technical stuff, not creature animations.

Most important changes in my opinion:
Knight needs a playable L1 creature.
Knight and Barbarian need at least one flier each.
Knight and Barbarian both need a L6 that can either compete with the others strengthwise or can be acquired much earlier. Right now the quickest to get is the Bone Dragon, giving Necro another significant advantage next to Vampire Lords and, well, necromancy.
EDIT: I just noticed that this was just necro'd. How ironic.
