So Linux is still not compatible with most commercial programs then? Do programs have to be specificaly written for the Linux operating system in order to run on it?

Quote: just because you can't see it, doesn't mean it isn't there (XP excluded)...
there's very few of dos left in win 2k and it's actually been rewritten. As much as linux is some kind of rewritten unix. So you don't call linux an OS either ?
Quote: ...read more carefully please... I said after the installation, NOT after all the drivers are installed from myriads of CDs..
well i didn't have problems after the installation , though i bought most pieces seperately, but that's also true i like to buy pretty standard pieces of hardware as i wnat my drivers updated as often as possible if any problems / new games / standards appear. But linux or windows, anyway it's still good to update drivers. Then comes the problems of software, games of course, but also IDEs (eurk emacs...) for programmers and tons of stuff like 3dsmax don't exist for linux.
btw you said it yourself:
Quote: linux was made by geeks
which is not necessarily bad
Quote: for geeks
which is much worse.
The day linux won't be made for geeks anymore hopefully "common" people will start to use it.

it would be nice...
...is that so surprising? ...there are different ports for each OS... for example, there is only one Quake 3 Arena, but there are three ports of the game... one for Win9X, one for MacOS and one for Linux... each OS uses different libraries and different approaches to some basic functions...
BTW: LiNUX is NOT Unix... not a frontend not another version... it's a different OS... they have many simillarities though..
and about the "geeks" part... LiNUX can be used by "normal" people as well... it's just that geeks enjoy it the most...

Not too surprising, but you must understand how that pretty much kills it, and keeps it from being a real substitute for windows. Nobody cares how stable a system is, or even if it is technologicaly superior, if you can't run 90% of all programs on it. And because most people don't want it because nothing runs on it, software companies are rarely making software that runs on it. It's really a lose/lose situation.
Now if somebody could make an OS that was superior to windows but didn't keep you from using all windows software, that would really be something and might actualy compete with microsoft. But the reason why Linux often only appeals to "geeks" as you put it, is because it doesn't benefit the average user in the slightest.

!!!NOT POSSIBLE!!!
...I'm refering to the second part of course... the "being better than Windows" part is easy...
...as I said before, the whole situation is starting to improve... companies start porting known programs on LiNUX... no, LiNUX is not the best choice for a beginner, not yet... pretty soon things are going to change...
...my prediction: Windows supremacy of the OS market has five more years of life...

Who is to say what is possible and what is not possible. I'm assuming that it wouldn't violate any copyright laws.
If Linux does extremely well it might have enough of a following in 5 years that companies will start making games for it as much as they do for the macintosh. Not that this is really saying much. But at least it will be on the charts. It's certainly not going to topple windows in 5 years though. As of know neither the average person or the average business would even consider getting linux (especialy the average business). I think it's optomistic to think this will change even slightly in 5 years.
Plus I bet in 5 years there will be some new OS out that all the software "geeks" will be raving about how better it is then windows 2005.

propably... but by then LiNUX will be on version 4.1.6 (now, it's not even on 2.5.0) or more, still outsmarting and outpowering other OSs...

Someone said.... "The only reason I boot up Windows is to run Heroes".
'Nuff said I think. If I have to have it on my machine to run Heroes I might as well use it. So many people are rabidly for or against Windows or monopolies that it becomes a major part of their lives. The worst day in American telephone use came about because the government broke up the AT&T monopoly.
I used to get the "Blue screen from hell" a lot when I was a beginner but I almost never get it now that I have learned to keep my system clean. You do know it's ultimately caused by a messy user dont you?
I dont want my games "ported" over at some later date. I want to play them now! If that means using MS products then thats what I will use! If you want to use something else.... Thats ok with me. But I will not blindly follow you either. Fighting for or against MS is not an indication of your intellegence level. Sucessfully using some (any) damned operating system is though.
I remember 15 years ago, LINUX users were bragging that LINUX was the OS of the future!
When in the hell is that going to start?
Before (and after) Windows 3.1 I liked DOS. But I have moved on and I dont want to go back to that either.

"I never meant it was illegal or something... it just can't be done... not anymore... "
Just because Linux can't do it, doesn't mean it can't be done. A better designed OS might be able to acomplish it.
"newsflash: LiNUX is on the charts... "
Barely. The fact that it is substantialy less popular then the mac, a system that most already don't bother making programs for says something.
"The companies are the first to turn to LiNUX.... it's FREE remember? "
Uh.....no. Companies rely on the their programs being compatible with others more then anybody else out there. No company wants to say to their client, sure we'd send you the document but its written in a non windows based word processing program so it will probably not be completely compatible with what you have. Being free is more likely to appeal to the average college student then to a big company which stands to lose money and clients from not being able to use standard software. I tell you this being a computer tech in the business world.
"propably... but by then LiNUX will be on version 4.1.6 (now, it's not even on 2.5.0) or more, still outsmarting and outpowering other OSs... "
Yeah I'm sure that's what the windows people say too. Don't worry in 5 years we will solve all our problems and everything will be great. And what makes you think it will be superior to all newly released OSs? Are you so blindly devoted that you can't imagine something better coming along? An OS like Linux that actually ran windows programs would blow Linux out of the water.
Oh and finally....
I don't think anybody wants to convince you to start using windows. If Linux works for your needs, great. But it's pretty silly to think that something right for you is going to be right for everyone. Most people actualy want to run commercial software.

Well my point was that to say it's a superior system kind of implies it is superior to everyone which is definetely not the case. Nobody has denied that is superior to you (but even a die hard linux fan like you needs to use windows sometimes like for heroes), but our main point is that it is not superior to 99% of the computer using population. Linux has it's uses, but it is without question a "niche" operating system.
Anyway I've found this argument to be reasonably interesting, even though you haven't really been supporting your arguments which is frustrating. But if you want to stop it, that's fine with me.

Seems like you all just flew by Craig's post about Windows. Says a lot for you Linux users, lol. You must have been brainwashed by the geeks who created the OS, lol!
Craig is right on the money. The blue screen thing is caused by messiness and by pushing windows too far. I bet the only time you get the blue screen is when you've got six programs, internet connection and two or three games running at the same time.
I keep my system a lot cleaner too and nowadays, I avoid running too many things at once. If I don't need to use the program immediately, it's easy to close it down.
I couldn't care less about linux I think. It sounds far too complicated to use and is so far available in only very small segments of the computer market. And if I can't play Heroes on the damn thing then forget it! It may as well be another computer altogether!

actually you'd be surprised to know with what ease can the blue screen pop up...

WinDO$ don't care even if you defrag once a day... if they want to crash, they'll crash...

guess what? you can play Heroes on LiNUX (both Win9x and LiNUX versions) ...I'm just too lazy to install WINE...

You're starting to sound even more ignorant than I am, Lith. Windows doesn't have a mind of it's own! It doesn't crash just because 'it feels like it' I haven't had a blue screen or a crash in months!
Number one: you have a virus
or
Number two: Back to what I said earlier, your computer is dodgy!

Quote: I think H3 runs on WINE... but why don't you buy H3 for LiNUX?
Because they you can only play network games against other Linux users because the Windows version of H3 uses Microsoft's proprietary DirectPlay networking protocol.
that's the same reason I (being the only Mac user here) can't play network games with any of you.
BTW, I just intalled Mac OS X on my laptop. Wow. It's great. Still needs some speed optimization, but it works just wonderfully. It's also nice to have a well-supported unix-based OS on my laptop.
I totally agree with whoever it was who commented on older versions of Word not being able to open newer Word files. They just want our money.
And again, I'd like to speak more intelligently on the subject, but It's late, I'm tired, and I had a few beers after work. I should probably be in bed...

The return of the awful double-posting moderator...
Linux can't run 90% of the software someone just said...
So what?
So maybe there's 10 different word processors available for Windows. So what? *YOU* are only going to use one at a time anyway.
95% of computer usage is web browsing, e-mail checking, word processing, and mp3 playing. You can do that on any modern OS. So you should use the OS you enjoy using the most.
Linux isn't any harder to use than Windows NT - in fact, I'd say its' more straightforward. I used it a great deal, and liked it much more than Windows. And I like Mac OS X even more than either of those (which means nothing to any of you, since you all have intel-compatible hardware)
Point is, my OS lets me do everything I want to do and much more. Linux does everything Lith wants to do and much more. Windows does almost everything anyone needs their computer to do and much more.
The problem is that Windows crashes, abuses their customers, and snows over everyone in the industry.
And that's why they have all of the marketshare.
It sucks, but that's reality. Anyway, anyone who does choose to switch to a Non-windows OS, I congratulate you. You'll realize you can do everything you typically use a computer for on any OS you pick.
The only area that hurts other Operating systems is games. Windows gets all of the games. Linux and Macintosh get a few original titles, but most of it is hand-me-downs that originally shipped for Windows.
I'm glad there is more cross-platform development starting to surface though.
Blizzard's games are all Mac/Windows compatible. The upcoming Neverwinter Nights will work with Mac/Linux/Windows, and maybe some other less common operating systems.
Anyway, the only point is that it doesn't really matter that much - and 5 years from now it will matter even less.
And my opinion is that unix-style systems are the best. I definitely prefer them for web-servers and for programming. However, other people's opinions will vary, but if your opinion is not based on experience, then you should try out some other operating systems.
A computer is a tool, and it should work with you, not against you.
However, as soon as I get another PC, I"m installing Linux *and* windows on it. Windows will just be for playing games though. And I don't think the M$ market dominance will last too much longer. The thing is, the computer market is large enough that it can be shared by 2-4 oprating systems with all people involved sitll making good money. And if people can stop microsoft from implementing their proprietary "standards" into everything, the internet will remain a free and cross-platform medium for us all to communicate, just as it is now.
