Multiplayer for the klutz : tips for beginners ?

Hello !

This is my first post here, and I hope similar threads do not already exist.
I'm not a H5 expert but I would like to start to play multiplayer because I'm fed up with the AI ; yet I know that good human players play non only better but, more important, in a very different way than the AI does : beating the AI does mean playing well.
So I was hoping that MP players could give some tips to noobs like me who would like to start playing serious MP : what are the greatest differences between SP and MP strategies ? What are the typical mistakes beginners might do in MP ? Are some factions easier to master in MP ? Etc. And one more thing : what difficulty level is most used in MP : hard or heroic ?.

Thanks a lot if you could help me !

Hey! Welcome, you've come to the right place I would suggest to see the tournament of heroes for that, good and honourable opponents. That said you might want to practice a bit or play some friendly games first but in any case playing is the best teacher.

Generally the tip is to creep as fast as possible and pick your skills according to whom you face, try to surprise him. You just lvl up as fast as possible to gain an advantage. The difficulty lvl is usually hard but you can agree with your opponent on that. As for what factions are easy to master that depends on you, academy and inferno are a bit hard to master afaik.

Beginers often try to build every creature dwelling, the castle, and upgrade all the creatures before initiating a fight with there opponent.  Depending on your match up, it may be much more effective to skip several creatures at attack your opponent sooner while they are off guard.  As soon as you see your match up (who your faction is and who your opponents faction is) you should pick a strategy and make all of your building, and leveling up decisions based on that strategy.  Competetive players doin't mill around all game without a plan.

The best way to figure it out I think is to go play good online players and ask questions. Dont annoy your opponent with too many questions but if you go about it the right way most people are willing to share some knowledge and give you some insight into their strategy etc. Ofcourse you will probably lose your first games but you will gain a lot of knowledge.

On a side note, I think one of the frequent mistakes most noobs make is that they creep too slow and avoid critical map locations early because they think the game will last longer than it usually does.

I'm not the best player, but I'm not so bad. I usually take the wood and or mines in the 2nd-3rd day depending on the distance. I mostly take the rest of the mines when I have about a level 4-5 monster I take the other mines, I can afford nearly everything now and build the remaining dwellings then I say bring it on!!!

This strategy isn´t perfect ´cause I don´t always have enough money.

Thank you for your answers ; I had guessed about creeping, but I never tried to have opposite faction and heroes dependant strategies.

One more thing : I think most strategy tips in this forum are really useful and I thank you for them, yet for a noob I think something is missing : comprehensive thread for combat tips. I've found an advanced post here (http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=22352) and on a another site there is another about taking dragon utopias with minimal forces, but no general one. For instance, only recently have I noticed you could take out most slow walking neutrals, however strong, with a single stack of rapid flyers. I'm sure I don't use spell the best way either. Etc.

So I you feel like filling me  in ...

It's good to learn how to "lead AI" on the battlefield. For example, most common, is placaing 1 fodder unit inside AI stack range - AI will always attack it regardless if it will move toward or away from your side of the battlefield, or inside precise shot range etc.
Fodders = placing AI stacks wherever you want.

Very important for: meteor shower(other aoe destructive and mass decay too), frenzy, precise shot, dragon breath, storm strike, spray attack, 3-headed attack, battle dive, lizard bite(AI will attack a fodder next to grim raiders if it's scared of a retaliation and then furies/fodders can trigger lizard bite)

I think a good tip is ..
Level 1-5 in week1 (lots to hordes)
, exceptions are archmages, druid elders, master hunters maybe, but necro and dungeon or war machine heroes can take on all mostly if u are prepared for losses

week 2, level 6,7 (pack to 20) with a good spell
Emeralds and black dragons can't unless have conjure phoniex spell

These are usually do or die fights So be careful
The key is to have experience in juding fights with different races, if hero is development well, he can do good battles really early. But overconfidence can cause a suicide as well

Walkers like squires, minotaur guards with morale but low initiative, good spells are fire trap with summoning, or lure one stack with a fast flyer to edge of battlefield while killing other stack.

Stupid creatures sure win fights are golems and zombies, 1 sprite, fury or sometimes master gremlim will do the job if u really need the resources desperately

Do some single player games and test it out yourself, you'll need to understand the way the atb bar works to do it.

And you can join the online community in http://www.toheroes.com for games, you'll need to install msn first to meet players

Hope this helps

Thanks, and 4 questions concerning what sq79 juste wrote :
1) in the first week, is it viable to lose troops in return for experience and collect resources (if a rush is not to be expected) ?
2) I guess you build the magic guild level 1 or 2 quite early, even with might factions ?
3) Is it better to build fort / citadel early for the growth bonus and the town hall upgrade, or dwellings instead ?
4) do you take experience in the good firsts chests even with might factions (I've already read that magic-oriented heroes should) ?

If there is no rush on the map, usually its enclosed with a strong garrison ? In that case, leveling up faster means u have a stronger hero to break earlier i guess. Losses are inevitable, only 1 troops makes ur heart ache when u lost even a single one, that's gotta be hunters, the rest of troops, losses are quite ok i guess.

Building depends more on faction you've gotten, example, all necro needs is phoenix spell, so rushing to level 5 guild in week2 if possible is best for magic races. But if your hero will not be walking back to town on the day you have finished level 5 guild, why not go for castle ?
For might races, getting castle asap seems better option

Hehe i think the guide isn't too realistic after all, it all depends on map and refugee camps, spells etc.. better to start playing more and gain experience

Well cant speak for most people cuz everyone has their own style and cant really speak for most factions cuz i usually play Academy and dont know the creeping methods that well with the others but I'll give my opinons about your questions:

1. Its not really a good idea to lose troops for experience unless its just a few lvl 1 because in general your troops are more valuable than the little bit of experience you will gain from first week fights. But for resources (or artifacts) especially the critical resources for your faction it is expected that you will lose troops just try to keep losses to a minimum obviously. In general I try to take wood and ore mines on first day if I can and then I go straight for the critical resource mine(s) for the given faction and take any mines that I reasonably can on the way. If you cant take critical resource mines in first few days at least have them scouted out so you know what is guarding them and can formulate a plan for when and how you can take them.

2. Yes in most cases you should at least have lvl 1 mage guild built in first week because with the build structure in HommV you cant build straight up to high level creatures quickly anyway and the magic guild will be more useful than some other options on your way up the build chain. With Academy I build up the magic guild quite quickly because the spells are far more useful for a wizard than the little bit of extra troops or money gained in week 1 by building those corresponding buildings.

3. This really depends on what type of strategy you are going for because several of the factions have a viable might or magic focus capability. Also depends on what troops you like to focus on and weather you plan to build all troops for the faction. You may not want to build all the troops or you may need a particular unit with upgrade ASAP in order to carry out your creeping plans. In general go for as many creature dwellings (upgrading only the most strategically important one) as you can plus the fort and citadel in week 1. This should allow you to have up to lvl 5 creature (assuming you skipped at least one lvl of creature of your choice) plus an upgrade and fort + citadel in week 1. This is assuming you are playing on hard difficulty and ofcourse is subject to your specific build priorities and strategy at the time. Personally I like to ignore money buildings until week 2 in 95% of cases.

4. With might factions no and with magic factions only chests that my main collects in the FIRST WEEK only. Might heroes are pretty much dependant on the troops they have early on and that extra experience wont help them much early because they still have a pathetic army but magic oriented heroes can make HUGE use of that expereince very quickly and very early. Besides might factions need relatively more money than magic factions in the early game because they rely on hiring troops to increase power and creep effectively whereas magic factions can let more troops collect in dwellings and rely more on magic.

Keep in mind all these oppinions are based on hard difficulty.

Long time ago ive always been building money structures first, it was a mistake, first thing you need to build is the army you kill creatures with. Each castle has some combo of troops to kill most of map and you need them to do it efficiently for example for academy mages and MASTER  gremlins or warlo9ck blood FURIES, necro skeleton ARCHERS and zombies. After you finish those structures and are able to clear most of map you should unlock money structures than dwelling/castle/mage guild depending on the race and your needs.

Tier 1-4 creatures = cheap
Tier 5-7 creatures = overpriced
so if short on money buy all 1-4 first and then start buying tier 5-7 creatures. Nightmares seem to be the only exeption.
