Agreed. Pikemen have been in HoMM since the beginning. Seeing them gone was a blow. I'd much rather have them then those fat and stupid peasants, anyways.

I really don't think that's the main reason. Rakshasa originate from Arabian Mythology, and since the Academy town got moved into a desert setting, water-loving Naga no longer would fit there. Thus they simply needed to find a creature that suited the faction better.
That's what I believe.

They would have been plausible, but, I do wonder in what sort of faction they would have fit. With the dwarves for sure, if they took a more Norse route... Which is again plausible since Dwarves originate from Norse mythology as well.
Creatures I miss: Troglodytes, Efreet, Minotaurs (Not the weak enslaved sissies, the true minotaurs!), Gorgons, Wyverns (again, the cool looking ones), lizardmen, BEHEMOTHS, rocs, Ogres.
Cool looking gargoyles, those I miss too.

Actually, the original Valkiries rode on wolves. They have been modernized to be all beautiful, but the original ones were feirce, dangerous, and possessing a savage beauty.

Agreed! Although I like the Wyverns in Heroes V. I still say they should have made the downgrade somewhat feathery, and had one upgradede be the roc (all feathers) and the other the Pao Kai.

Rakshasa are from the same mythos Naga are from - Hindu mythos.
The original Minotaur wasn't much better, simply a prisoner.

Rakshasas are identical to Naga in the sense of having no enemy retaliation, high HP, and high attack. That aside, they have four arms.
Backgrounds are different, yes.
@ Daystar: You seriously like these wyverns? They are hideous!
