Romania
I'm trying an experiment here, and I'm gonna need help from you guys.
Anyone who is not Romanian can post here about anything he knows,heard...about my country and the people (good or bad doesn't matter, I won't mind). I'm interested about the way it is seen from outside the borders.

Well I'm your neighbor so I know some stuff about ya.
Most of my knowledge about the region comes from history.
The region itself was called Dacia, before the Roman emperor Traian came there and exterminated the Dacians to get gold, which they had in abundance... From then onwards the place has been known as Romania. Later it got populated by various tribes... Finally they all just became known as Romanians.
I've had a lot of interest in Vlaad Cepesh... Not as a vampire (I mean, we all know that part), but his historical deeds. I think it's a great story. But too long to write now.
You waged wars against the Ottoman empire in the Balkans... Stuck between Austria and Turkey you had quite a tough position for some time.
Later, some time after the liberation of Balkan states from Turkey, the First world war broke out. Both sides wanted you to help them, but you joined Russia. And you were victorious.
In World War 2 you made that wrong decision to join the Axis... That was pretty bad. During the war itself, as far as I know (from the game Hearts of Iron 2 ) the Germans took northern Transylvania from you and gave it to the Hungarians. After the war, when you lost, you got Transylvania, but also the Soviet regime which lasted for a few decades... And we all know how unpleasant that tends to be :\ Romania even became a synonym for a screwed up country for some time...
After that, you overthrew communism and now you've even entered the European Union, right?
That's about it. I don't know much about current living status there, though I hear it got better over the years (though it's still not too high).

I'm Sorry
to admit this but I've heard almost nothing about romania except that they are some of the world's best Olympic styles lifters. I am ashamed to say this. I have done a fair amount of travelling within my own country and that is all I ever heard. I know nothing else.

While Romanian is based on Latin it also somehow adopted some Russian words (mainly profanity ), so I can more or less understand what Romanians are talking about
Oh ya, about history - wasn't Romania the most stubborn part of the Western Roman Empire that considered itself to be Roman Empire for quite some time after the whole thing fell? It even had the emperors for a few centuries if I remember correctly. Isn't that the reason for it being called Romania?

That was Byzantium, and it was mostly Greek.
Aside from what others have already posted, I'll try to add some personal stuff.
My earliest memories date from the mid-eighties, while both my homeland Yugoslavia and Romania were still communist, although the former was not behind the Iron Curtain. So once or twice a year my parents used to travel to border towns or Timisoara and sell a lot of goods unavailable in Romania at the time. It must have been really bad, since even sweets were high in demand. Sometimes we kids would get gifts like those strangest toys ever, such as that spooky doll which gave my sister the creeps or that metal bus, surprisingly realistic and bleak unlike anything intended for children.
Fast forward, and I was watching the revolution live on TV while everybody was talking of some funny looking old man called Ceausescu. Nobody in Yugoslavia could even dream the very same thing would happen to them a decade later. During the UN sanctions, oil was smuggled from the same country we used to mock ten years before.
But back in 1986, the war was still years away. Romania was no longer only the homeland of great gymnasts - Steaua became the first East European football team to win the European Cup (they would make another embarrassing attempt three years later). One of the players, a Romanian Serb named Belodedici, would soon wear the shirt of my Red Star Belgrade and win the title once again, in 1991. This was not the last I heard of Romanian football: in 1994 World Cup, thanks to great Hagi, the national team reached quarter-finals but Sweden was better.
Finally, my wife and I are planning to visit the Bran Castle, supposedly the home of Dracula. While it might be historically false, it's said to be cheap and fun. Perhaps I'll have a chance to meet Tigris for example, one of many Heroes vets from Romania and one of my all-time favorite HC posters.
One more thing: while it may be a question of upbringing, I have never heard of Romanians being referred to as thieves. Could we please refrain from such obvious stereotypes...?

thanks for the posts guys, keep it up
you can use words like thieves in this thread because it's important to get a real perspective, like I said before I don't mind
the word Romania comes from "ruman" I think which was a type of peasant in the middle ages
If u have questions I will be happy to answer them also
Tzigan (tz is expressed by a specific letter which looks like a t with a coma under it) is the romanian word for gypsies

My town is so near Romania, that I can go there for 5-6 hours with
bicycle (I cant do it now with this walking stick, but after some months probably )
Romania's territory was long long time part of the first Bulgarian empire, since the time of Khana Siubigi Krum. During the second Bulgarian Empire almost all tzars (Emperors) of Bulgaria have the title tzar of vlachs, as well as tzar of Bulgaria.
Romania as Wallachia also helped to the bulgarian "hushes" (revolutionaries against the turks). Romania took part in the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878) too.
There is more... but maybe another day

extremely interesting thread. I'm a Romanian and also interested in seeing how other people from afar see us. please post more.
oh and the orphan thing 'was' a problem because of Ceausescu's policy to ban abortions, forcing the women to have unwanted pregnancies, thus the high child abbandon rate. now the natality rate is much lower.

Ya, it was also called EASTERN Roman Empire, which I was not talking about. It survived for about 1000 years after the Western one collapsed. Wasn't Romania a part of the Western one?
I was talking about Romania around the years 480-600 A.D. I should probably read a bit about it, but too lazy

In 480-600 on the place of Rumania there is the Avar Khaganate - strong country, destroyed by one of the greatest bulgarian Khans - Krum in 800 (or 801)
