Representative units per faction
And yet again another useless discussion brought to you by yours truly
This is something I've been wondering about since, well, half an hour to be honest.
Through the course of games factions have been changed and overhauled many a time, but in practicly every faction there was always at least 1 unit that remained consistant with the faction.
My two questions are these:
- Which unit do you think is most representative for every faction?
- Do you think in a possible Heroes 6, these units should be given an extra boost in statistics, just to amplify the fact these units are the faction's core, their most loyal and best units?
Easy example: The Warlock and his Black Dragons.
Take into account H2, H3, H4, and H5. H1 only featured 4 factions so, that would cut out on poor wizards and undead. Since demons are new in H3, take into account H3, H4, and H5 for them.
Please do NOT name a creature that has been missing in any of the series (Except H1, and H2 if the faction was new in H3)
And the nominees are:
Faction: Creatures:
- Haven Archer, Squire, Paladin (The cavalry unit)
- Inferno Imp, Cerberus, Devil, Pit Lords, Demons
- Sylvan Woodelf, Unicorn
- Dungeon Minotaur, Black Dragon
- Academy Golem, Mage, Genie, Titan
- Necropols Skeleton, Vampire, Bone Dragon, Liches
- Stronghold Cyclops, Goblins, Orcs
Discutable ones:
- I didn't list Hydras under Dungeon since they were missing in H3. But if many prefer Hydras over Blackies as representatives for Dungeon, I could add them
Due to some switching about, H4 can be slightly ignored
So, again my question: Which single unit do you guys think is most representative for each faction and do you think should potentially deserve to be just a bit stronger than average for their tier?

Blackies were the first thing that came to my mind
Paladin for haven. D'uh they are knights, you can't ditch paladins.
Inferno I'd say devil.
Woodelves for sylvan of course, they are its most distinctive unit and one that people love too.
About academy all are but I cling more to mages and titans.
Skellies for necropolis, wanna know my reasoning?
Stronghold...Always so different even the cyclops changes roles. If there's one thing I consider their trademark are behemoths, a symbold of brutality and awesomeness Orcs have been in most but I rarely liked them.

Alright alright, feel free to call Goblins (as if anyone is gonna xD)
I pretty much agree fully with you there Elvin, except on 2 points.
Inferno: I would actually favour PitLords since they represent sheer chaotic power with big-bang magic and powerfull melee blows. Alas, they lacked in H4, but H5 made them look totally awesome. Devils would be a close second
Necropolis: I think I know your reason behind it It's because skeletons represent the Necro's core philosophy: "Quantity over Quality" right? As much as I agree, I would honestly favour Bone Dragons as Necro's mightiest representative symbol xD They just look more terrorizing.
Haven and Sylvan: Totally agree, Palas and Woodelves
Dungeon: Blackies, duh xD Dragons is what made Dungeon so great to begin with. And they deserve that extra bit of imba power.
Academy: Likewise, I can't choose between Mages and Titans Titans are cooler and a mage's greatest symbol of achievement, but then, the less popular Mages represent the faction's theme better: Magic.
Stronghold: I would be all in favour of Behemoths since they do represent what Stronghold is all about. Brute, raw strength. Unfortunately, they weren't present in H1, H2, and H5, so it would be hard to press them as representative for the faction, even though they totally carry the theme. I'm really not too sure about this faction. Cyclops just aint as cool as Behemoths.

I'd go with Goblins for Stronghold (so there!). Strength in numbers. It represents the idea of "united we stand, divided we end up getting massacred by almost every other creature in the game." Plus Goblins are in Heroes IV: The Gathering Storm (Goblin Knights) and Gretchin the Goblin Barbarian did return... does that count?

Btw you could say pitlords were present in H4 in the form of ice demons. Liked them a lot
@Cepheus
Goblins are about treachery, cowardice and suckinesss which is the shame of a barbarian. There

Ice Demons = Pit Lords? A bit of a stretch, no? But then again the Devils sort of took on their role, being able to summon allies.

Oh come on, you honestly want to think of GOBLINS of all creatures as representatives of Stronghold's brute strength theme? xD Quantity is Necro's theme, not stronghold's!

Well I personally think Necropolis has two main themes One is quantity over quality. The other is Horror and Terror. And if there's one unit inflicting most terror and horror upon sight on the battlefield, it's the Bone Dragon. Hence, I favour those
Tell you what, if people post their list of favourit representatives, I'll count the votes.
Oh, still that question: Do you people think such symbolic creatures should deserve a bit of extra power compared to their average tier ?

It's not about the brute strength theme, it's about the standing together or you'll end up dead theme dammit!
Quote: Derg is defiant when he is pulled before you.
"And his men?" you ask Hardac.
"All dead," Hardac says. Then you turn to Derg.
"A deserter doesn't even deserve death in battle," you say.
"Hang me then! The things you've made me do - I'm ashamed. I just wish I ran away sooner!"
In the end, you are generous and allow Derg to fight for his freedom. But his opponent is Hardac and the battle doesn't take long.
How cowardly. He tries to defy a tyrant king and then comes back to meet his fate, knowing full well he'll be slaughtered.
Quote: A soft noise wakes you and you find you're staring at the fine point of a dagger. On the other end of the dagger is the senile Goblin who's been a thorn in your side for quite a while. He's got the jump on you, so you pretend to relax while reaching for the knife hidden beneath your bedroll.
"I found the one who murdered the advisors!" says the Goblin.
Thinking the Goblin has discovered that it was you who poisoned the cups of your captains, your hand snaps forward burying your blade to the hilt in the Goblin's chest. He collapses to the ground with a shocked expression.
"What'd you go an' do that for? I was going to confess...it was me...that elk we ate, well I didn't kill it. Found it on the road two days dead...musta been rotten...poisoned them all. You musta known all along, didn't you?"
"Yes," you lie. Poor old fool.
"I guess I get what I deserve," the Goblin mumbles as blood dribbles from its mouth. "One day, we all get what we deserve."
And he dies.
Confessing to a misdeed when he could have just as easily ran away for good. Pitiful.
And those freaks in Christian's campaign don't count, just like the lazyass Behemoth Kilgor needs to kill doesn't count against their "brute strength".

I don't think so, because they probably already do have it. People love those little double shooting elves because they are very powerful in all versions of the game etc.

@Phoenix: So technically you are saying it IS ok, since they do have it, a bit, and you're ok with it
Woodelves still have it, yes. Black Dragons don't, though. Yeah they are strong, but not strong enough imo. Paladins still wreck them in one blow.
@Ceph: Goblins, honourable? Please xD Are you being serious? The main concept of Goblins, no matter in what universe and reincarnation, is "Cannonfodder"...
You really think the MAIN theme of Stronghold is "united we stand".. ? I've never ever heard that before in context with Stronghold. Sooner something morale-boosting humans of Haven would tell to their troops. But that's just my opinion.
