@WarLore: can you try to better explain what your problem is? Right now, I don't understand. Please use complete words and sentences.
Here's what I got so far:
- you have Windows XP
- you have unchecked the read only attribute
- it doesn't work when you try to make a mod
Which is really not enough to help you. What do you do exactly?
You extracted from the data.pak the files you want to edit?
You kept the original folder structure?
You can edit them?
You then package them as a mod? which extension do you use? where do you place it?
---
@Antipaladin:
what Daystar is asking you is a link to the "magic extractor" you mentioned. Do you have one?

@guarder: the original maps are in data.pak. You can find them as .h5m files on
http://www.heroesofmightandmagic.com/heroes5/original_maps.shtml
I don't know how the special DM map scheduled for the complete edition will be packaged (as .h5m, as part of a .pak, ...). I guess we'll see when it is actually released.
Does this answer your question? Because I'm not sure I understood your point.

@WarLore: Still not enough explanations...
I'll try one last time to guess what you're doing, but you've got to explain yourself better (with more details).
Let's take stats for example:
- Which file did you try to edit?
- Did you extract it from the data.pak first?
- Did you uncheck read-only?
- With what program do you try to edit it?
- Can you save it once you update it or not?
- ...
(let's start with that)

A question: Does one have the ability to change the default magic school of the faction (for exemple Destruction -> Light)?
Both in terms of changing the possibility of encountering the skill on lvl'up of a faction hero, and spells given in the magic guild of the faction town.

It sure is possible. The first part requires a little advanced modding, the second can be done in the map editor with ease.

I'm already surfing through the data files looking for a proper data to edit. And I do know it is possible to edit spells within one city guild's limits using the editor - it was possible since Heroes II from what I remember. But what I would like to aquire is the change of the DEFAULT magic school of the faction.
(For exemple - now Sylvan will end up with light and Destruction spells on IV and V guild lvl. Either if it is a random castle or edited one. My objective is to make those spells - for example, Dark and Summoning.)

I knew what you meant and I meant what I said - you can make the mod using the editor. Create a map, put a town somewhere and click on it. There should be a properties window on the left, find "Shared", click it and then click on the small three-dots button that appears. Now you'll be in a new window with AdvMapTownShared at the top and the eight town types below. Click whichever town type you want - on the right you'll see two properties called MagicSchool_0 and MagicSchool_1. In Academy for example, you'll see they are marked as Light and Summoning. Simply change either Magic School in whichever town you like, exit the window, save your map and it will work as a mod.
Alternatively, you could just edit the corresponding files in data.pak\MapObjects. They are:
Academy.(AdvMapTownShared).xdb
Heaven.(AdvMapTownShared).xdb
et cetera, et cetera. Scroll to the very bottom of each file in Notepad and you'll see
<MagicSchool_0>MAGIC_SCHOOL_LIGHT</MagicSchool_0>
<MagicSchool_1>MAGIC_SCHOOL_DARK</MagicSchool_1>
and the like. Change them at will.

One thing to note, should you consider adding the same school twice: it just randomly selects 2 spells of the chosen school then, and that can mean you get the same spell twice. The game wasn't built for this .

Naah, never did I thought about reducing a faction to a single magic school, but thanks for the advice.

The other info on probability for skills can be found in this file: \GameMechanics\RefTables\HeroClass.xdb. I am guessing, though, that the given percentages are further weighted according to availability of each skill. A skill that is already learned to expert level is not taken along, for example. The same will apply to perks, I guess.

Yes, the percentages only apply to the "new spell slot" (top left), and scaled among the remaining unchosen skills. Among chosen skills (basic level or more), the probability is uniform.
