You can use curse of the netherworld instead of the retaliation strike also if your other troops are dead or meaningless.
EDIT: I often take expert counterstrike isntead of the sorcery in the case the enemy is necro or inferno.

Doesn't that build give you mana issues? 2 magic schools and expert sorcery with a low-knowledge knight? I'd be inclined to go mana regeneration and erratic mana as well to help out the cost of spells.

That's why the arcane excellence. The +100 mana for the last battle(hopefully). But I don't follow these slavely of course. Sometimes I just can't seem to get the skills and I adapt. No one's stopping erratic mana but I find that +100 mana better.
Biggest problem I think is the levels needed. I often find myself neglecting sorcery somewhat. Even taking expert counterstrike instead to boost the damage the griffins do on retaliation forgetting sorcery completely.
Against necro the tactic doens't work anyways. But mass slow and mass haste combined are just evil.
