A few songs that come to mind are:
Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers
Sounds of Silence by Simon and Garfunkle
Imagine by John Lennon.
Music is so mood dependant though. If I'm in a rockin' mood, those wouldn't be my picks. I guess I need a few songs for all occasions.

Good Topic. Though I agree with Binabik about music being mood dependent...
There are just some songs that have immortalized themselves in my consciousness. Here they are in no particular order.
1. Paradise by the Dashboard Light--Meatloaf
I'm a fan of big, epic songs and Jim Steinman is the man who writes more big and epic rock songs than any other. This is a particular favorite of mine as it exposes the evil manipulations of women and us unfortunate men who, in the heat of the moment, make profound choices that will haunt for the rest of our days.
2. Estranged--Guns n Roses
The second and arguably greater masterpiece from Use Your Illusion. The other one is November Rain. Unfortunately 9 minute songs don't get airtime so if all you did was listen to the radio and watch the VMAs you'd never know its brilliance. Take your pick; the crisp lyrics, the perfect piano, the perfect guitar of Slash. You get them all in one song.
3. So Cruel--U2
Any conversation about greatest rock bands must include U2. These guys have been doing it and doing it well for nearly 30 years. This song is off of Achtung Baby, which was a very worthy successor to the Joshua Tree. Its not easy for a group to follow up a masterpiece with another masterpiece. Notice a trend? Yeah, maybe I'm just a sucker for songs about love gone sour.
4. This is the One--The Stone Roses
What is it about artists? Either they're self destructive, as in the case of Shannon Hoon, Hendrix et al., or they're just d***s, as in the case of Ian Brown of The Stone Roses. These guys put together such an unbelieveably great inaugural album and followed it up with such a PoS sophomore effort in Second Coming that makes the first effort stand out even more. Some might say the Manchester scence got swallowed up by grunge rock. I don't know. What I do know is that John Squire's amazing, stupendous guitaring was wasted on an asshat like Brown.
5. Under Pressure--David Bowie and Queen
Since Terje already menthioned Bohemian Rhapsody, I had to be different. While they're both magnificent songs this rates just a smidgeon higher on my canon of songs. Plus, the opening bass line gave a certain white rapper the inspiration for Ice Ice Baby many years later. A beautiful song.
6. Me and Bobby McGee--Janis Joplin
Take one part genius writing from Kris Kristofferson and one part rough and rugged Joplin, you have a marriage of perfection.
7. Let it Whip--The Dazz Band
Hey! This is my childhood we're talking about here. Whenever I think back with fond memories of my time at Rainbow Roller Rink this song along with Human League's Don't You Want Me Baby and Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse of the Heart I get all sad and sensitive, like one of those sensitive ponytail guys.
8. Brown Eyed Girl--Van Morrison
Of the 3 songs I'll always pick on a jukebox this is my favorite. This is a sad, bittersweet song about that first great love.
9. Ignition--R. Kelly
Surprised? Yeah well, I'm full of surprises. I'm not normally an R & B type of guy, but the Chocolate Factory legitimized R. Kelly as a great artist. Too bad he likes little girls.
10. Lullaby of London--The Pogues
I don't like country. I like Folk. Shane Macgowan I believe is the son of Janis Joplin and a carton of Lucky Strikes. Another artist whose demons threatened to swallow him, I heard he finally kicked the bottle and is performing again. This song is an original that I loved so much I used it to romance Violent_Flower, singing her softly to sleep.

Two extremely good songs, with combined woman and man singing, is Tvangeste - From Nameless Oracle and Haggard - Per aspera ad astra. It's wonderful (just noticed them), and would be on my list pretty high up. I strongly suggest that you listen to them it's amazing. Symphonic doom metal though, but especially the Haggard one is very symphonic.

These aren't necessarily all top 10, but they absolutely deserve a mention. It might not show in this list, but honest, I like heavier music (and lots of other kinds)
Unchained Melody - The Righteous Brothers
Eight letters - L O V E S O N G - And the Righteous Brothers do this song best.
When a Man Loves a Woman - Percy Sledge
Another sappy love song. How true the words are.
Knockin on Heavens Door - Bob Dylan
Just a damn good song, maybe THE best song. And the first person who mentions GnR is getting slapped
Diamonds and Rust - Joan Baez
Joan sings about Bob. Yes, that ^ Bob. Joan is still a beautiful woman at 60+.
Sounds Of Silence - Simon and Garfunkle
Silence like a cancer grows.
Let it Be - The Beatles
Thanks for saying goodbye. You guys knew you were breaking up and decided to put your differences aside one last time and show us what you could do. Great album. Great movie. And great song. RIP John. RIP George. RIP Linda.
Summertime - Janis Joplin
The Gershwin song from Porgy and Bess. Janis does it best. When she's in the zone, she can't be touched for pouring out her heart and soul. Ball and Chain was a real contender for this spot if the quality had been better. I have the CD version and it's fantastic. RIP Janis - Where have all the flowers gone?
Tupelo Honey - Van Morrison
Copy/paste - Just a damn good song. Van Morrison was one of those guys with one really good song per album, and the rest were barely passable. Guess which one this is?
Alvin Lee gets two songs.
Id Love to Change the World - Alvin Lee and Ten Years After
One of my favoritest songs. I was looking for a video with no video so the words could speak for themselves. Then I found this. I like the contrast between the lyrics and the video. We choose how we see the world and I choose this video. The other is still there, but we can't get lost in it.
Bluest Blues - Alvin Lee & Ten Years After with guest George Harrison
What to say. I get shivers every time with this one. I really like the electric blues of David Knopfler playing Brothers in Arms. But here's the master. Patience is a virtue on this one.
whatever happened to passion?

I went on a Bad Company kick back um, a long time ago. But it faded. I think I had a few of their albums (vinyl), but they faded also. Actually, I have no idea what happened to all my albums. I assume I sold them, but I don't remember it.

My list, with associated best part of the lyrics (according to me ):
1. Desperado - The Eagles
(All time favorite, nice to hear, and to sing...)
Don't you draw the Queen of Diamonds, boy
She'll beat you if she's able
The Queen of Hearts is always your best bet
Now it seems to me some fine things
Have been laid upon your table
But you only want the ones you can't get
2. Santa Fe - Bon Jovi
(I love many Bon Jovi's songs, but this one is just so strong in the lyrics! Not to mention the great orchestra.)
And I blame this world
For making a good man evil
It's this world that can drive a good man mad
And it's this world that turns a killer into a hero
Well I blame this world for making a good man bad
3. The Long and Winding Road - The Beatles
(Sometimes fine melody and lyrics just enough to define a good song.)
Many times I've been alone
And many times I've cried
Anyway you'll never know
The many ways I've tried
But still they lead me back
To the long winding road
4. Angel - Sarah McLachlan
(Perhaps one of the best accoustic musics ever. The remake by Westlife is also good.)
You are pulled from the wreckage
Of your silent reverie
You're in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort here
5. Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
(I simply love the music - nice variety in the beat.)
And its whispered that soon
If we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason
And a new day will dawn
For those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter
6. The Prayer - Andrea Bocelli and Celine Dion
(Christmas is coming everyone... )
I pray you'll be our eyes, and watch us where we go
And help us to be wise in times when we don't know
Let this be our prayer, when we lose our way
Lead us to the place, guide us with your grace
To a place where we'll be safe
7. Soldier of Fortune - Deep Purple
(Another slow rock classic.)
In days of old when nights were cold
I wandered without you
But those days I thought my eyes
Had seen you standing near
Though blindness is confusing
It shows that you're not here
8. Nothing Is Gonna Change My Love for You - George Benson
(Not a kind of song I fancy these days, but it brought back good memories.)
If the road ahead is not so easy
Our love will lead the way for us
Like a guiding star
I'll be there for you if you should need me
You don't have to change a thing
I love you just the way you are
9. A Whiter Shade of Pale - Procol Harum
(Many versions of this song. I think I like Nazareth's best, but due credit should always go to the original.)
She said there is no reason
And the truth is plain to see
But I wandered through my playing cards
Would not let her be
One of sixteen vestal virgins
Who were leaving for the coast
At the moment my eyes were open
They might just as well have been closed
10. Forever Young - Alphaville
(Forever young, I want to be forever young )
So many adventures couldn't happen today
So many songs we forgot to play
So many dreams are swinging out of the blue
We let them come true
____________
But now I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it.

3. Dakishimetai
by: Jungle Smile
Yes! J-Pop or whatever you may call it. 'I Want To Hug' seems to be its translation in English. Great song.
2. The Light Before We Land
by: The Delgados
The video shows just a part of the song. I heard this song from an anime that I just bought recently and I happen to like the Opening song.
1. Stolen
by: Dashboard Confessional
Great song. My number one favorite right now and definitely one of the best for I feel better when I hear this song. I feel loved...by nobody! Also I love the video and the vocalist. He's cute.

Here are some very favorites of mine. Probably forgetting most.
For some reason finding non-live versions from youtube is extremely hard. I end up with a live or a FF one.
Listed in no particular order.
Movetron - Romeo ja Julia
Iron Maiden - Fallen Angel
Coolio - Gangstas Paradise
Neljä Ruusua - Elän vain kerran
Kotiteollisuus - Minä Olen
Dingo - Autiotalo
Apulanta - Armo
Alicia Keys -Womans Worth
Yö - Joutsenlaulu
Lordi - Devil Is a Loser
K-System - Guardian Angel
Nightwish - Nightquest
Rainbow - I Surrender
The Police - Every Breath You Take
Timo Rautiainen ja Trio Niskalaukaus - Surupuku
There are too many. I would have to fill the whole thread.
Scorpions, Deep Puprle, Britney, Metallica, Irina, Elvis, Evanesence, Raptori, Bomfunk MC's...
There's no way I could list them all.
70s rock, 80s metal, 90s dance and pop mostly with a bit of a Finnish thouch.

my turn ...
Ok, as it has been said it is very difficult to create just a small top-10 list.
The more I try the more I am convinced that this problem is PSPACE-complete.
Anyway,
If I had to hear a song and then .. die , then it would be one of the following two:
01. Tchaikovsky - Swan Lake
02. Scorpions - Crossfire The version by Berliner Philarmoniker is simply unbeatable!
-- From now on, it's a mess to decide --
03. Hyperchild - Wonderful life
04. Soul Asylum - Runaway Train
05. Metallica - Unforgiven or Until it sleeps
06. Iggy Pop - Passenger
07. Rolling Stones - Paint it Black
08. REM - Losing my religion
09. Bob Dylan - Hurricane
10. Bob Marley - Redemption Song [summertime! ]
However, this leaves outside many great bands, singers, composers, and songs.
For example:
* Manos Hadjidakis - Night return That's the first song in the clip. But basically any instrumental song by him as a tribute.
* Black Sabbath - Paranoid
* Placebo - Bitter end
* Nick Cave - Do you love me?
* Aerosmith - Dream on
* Guns n roses - November rain
* Gotan Project - Santa Maria
* Greenhornes - There is an end
* Nina Simone - My baby just cares for me
* Edith Piaf - La vie en rose
* Duke Ellington something, anything ...
* Miles Davis same as above ...
* Dire Straits - Sultans of swing
* David Bowie - The man who sold the world
* Rage against the machine - Wake up
* Paradise Lost - Small town boy
* HIM - Solitary man
* Robert Miles - Children
* Def Leppard - Love Bites
* Bon Jovi - Born to be my baby
* Live - Dolphin s cry
* Sweet Dreams either by Eurythmics or Marilyn Manson.
Of course Tainted love is another great song and I enjoy both versions again a lot.
* Green Day - Basket case (so that younger ones hear something different from the Boulevard of broken dreams)
* Nirvana - Come as you are
man, I heard too much music! It's endless...
Your turn ...
