@Asheera: Well, smack me hard and call my Shirley, I didn't know that! That is big for me since now I can use 3D texturing programs much more easily and effectively! Also, now the study of the model is 10x easier! Thank you I owe you one.
@Cepheus: Thank, I didn't know that. Useful function! Pity though that the Tribes expansion is coded differently.
I would like to thank you guys and Radar for helping me out. If I have any other questions I will be sure to ask here.
Cheers to all and ciao.

I have actualy made progress in texturing.
But how do I put my edited texture in-game? I can only see it on the adventure map (a purple pixie in this case).

Because you edited only the LOD files, or those tags that have an "Adv" suffix. Those are for adventure map.
But you should also modify the normal files without any suffix (sometimes they are also named with "Arena")

This is so weird. Basically, I copied the Pixie.lod.texture.lod.dds bla bla bla and put it in an editing folder.
Then I edited it and copy pasted it back to the un-extracted data folder and replaced the normal texture with my edited one.
Then I started the game and saw my emerald dream Pixie instead of the blue one. Then I closed the game, and logged in again.
But the second time - the Pixie had its normal blue color!!!
and you're supposed to edit the Model folder right? Because there is no dds in characters.

There are two textures for pre-TotE creatures. The ones with "Lod" in their name are for the adventure map.
And some Textures are in Model folder, some are in the Textures one, and some are someplace else... they're scattered all over the place, it's a mess.

Ok, I understand.
I have no idea what Nival was thinking when they made this. Now I have to find the non-lod textures.
Also I found a Dinosaur creature texture and some kind of "Sea Merchant" building texture - is it common sense or did I discover it first on HC?
edit: Bah! All creatures in the Sylvan/Preserve Model folder are LOD!
This is the worst game I ever have modded
Atleast Warcraft 3 had in-built modding stuff
I cant find the normal non-LOD Pixie texture anywhere *cry*

I believe they are in Textures/auto-imported/Creatures/Preserve/Pixie_LOD
The Dinosaur textures are for a static "joke" model much like the WW2 planes and UFOs. I don't know what you mean by Sea Merchant.

Because officially it is not supposed to be modded, except making maps, since Nival didn't release any tool whatsoever.
It's pretty clear to see that, although .xdb files are text, Nival used a program to generate them (just look at all that mess - someone who would have made them manually would have organized them better)

Well, yes, but that depends on whether you need it or not... If you've downloaded an NCF creature then that's what you do.

Huh? shouldn't a program always organize them in the same ways?
some program generates horrible code, but to me, it looks like nival made the work manually. it can be hard to organize everything when you aren't used to it, you keep coding, and when you realize you have created a mess, you can't even fix it because you won't have enough time left to finish the game.

Just take a look at "Textures\auto-imported_____19372"
Come on, that is clearly a folder name auto-generated by some program at a testing phase or something... and there are many more like that.

Thanks! Didnt know that there was creatures in those weird folders.
edit: this is the last problem I have, I think
So I have edited the Pixie now - but how do you put into the Data.pak folder? I tried to copy paste it inside but it didnt work, I just got "The program doesnt answer" when I did that.
It would be fun to actualy be able to see it in-game

Don't put it in Data.pak
Put it outside, while keeping the same directory structure.
Here's an example of a correct path that works:
For data\data.pak\GameMechanics\RPGStats\DefaultStats.xdb
It should be data\GameMechanics\RPGStats\DefaultStats.xdb
I think that example will be enough for you to understand.
However, even if it works that way, it's not a good way to share it with others in that format. So, here's what you have to do: Create a .zip file with WinRar or WinZip or any other program that can create .zip files. This .zip file must contain exactly the folders you have in the data folder that are for your mod with the Pixie. After you create the .zip file, rename its extension to .h5u and place it in UserMODs folder.
Then of course you can remove the folders related to your mod from the data directory, since you create the .h5u file (zip) which is a Mod.

Omg Asheera, you are a god(dess)!!!
Finally I can make beautiful texturing mods for HC and gain precious QPs for them!!!1
Now its time to make the Dryad, which will be purple.
I will also recolor icons later, now that I get the whole texturing thing.
Sylvan will be changed to have a lunar/solar theme.
edit: bah, have to find the stupid non-lod Dryad now!
