UK: Well, when I went up through school I didn't learn anything until I was 11. Then we had 3 years of compulsory French and German, and for the last 2 years of those, Latin as well. Any of these we could continue for either another 2 years or another 4 (I did 2 more years of French and German). For the last 2 years of school (the optional school years) there was also Spanish, Russian, Japanese and Italian on offer, iirc, none of which I did. But the rules vary widely between schools. These days, I hear, pupils are learning French from about age 6, so we are getting better at being less isolated!

Here in Lebanon (When i was young) there were mostly 2 major school methods, either Arabic-French or Arabic-English.
I learned french then,je parle un peu français.
English I learned at A language center.(I know little now)
Spanish Took it on my own,we have many relatives in Venezuela, later i bought a Cd that teach some phrases, buenas tardes amigos.
And nevertheless know few word from different Italian, languages,German,Japanese,Chinese,Russian,Greece(I salute them).
I like to learn languages.

The only other language my high school offered back then was Spanish but I never took those classes. If we were accepted, we had the choice to attend a technical school in place of learning a Foreign language. Not sure how they figured that one but I was more interested in learning Computer Graphics over Spanish anyway.
I do know a little bit of French since my Great Grandmother was from France. Most of the people on my mother's side speak a mixture of French and English without realizing it. Just the other day when we were celebrating my aunt's birthday she constantly said Merci instead of thank-you. It's like a habit in a way. I even do it at work sometimes and they kind of look at me funny.

Well, here in Germany I learned a little bit English (as you can see, I hope^^) and some French, but I forgot too much so cannot really speak nor write it.
I read that some of you did learn some German in school. I would like to know whether you think that it is hard to learn it, and did you ever read some German novels? I think it must be quiet difficult, but maybe I got a wrong idea of it...

Let's not swear in front of the mods... That's a very nice word indeed.

You got that right, that's my name. But because I don't live in Finland I often intoduce myself as Erik to foreigners, it's a lot easier.

German was hard, certainly harder than French. I was translating a French website the other day, which I could just about do, but an equivalent German one was beyond me. We had to read Der Sandmann, and then make our own film about it, it was kinda fun I guess...
How to French and English compare?
