Pokémon - Adventures in Helnith (OoC)
Well, the voices in my head () have been teasing me for a while, daring me to create this RPG.
So, here's the Out of Character thread.
Basically, if you want to play, you can PM me or post in this thread.
I'll be posting starting information about the RPG here.
Ok, where to start?
Choice of starter Pokémon - Any Normal or Normal/Flying Type Pokémon you'd be able to find in grassy areas between the starting town of any videogame (where your house usually is) and the town after that (where the first Pokémon center is).
Said Pokémon starts at level 5.
For those of you who haven't played any of the games, but want to play here, Ill be posting the list of allowable Pokémon as time allows.
If you have played, then you should have a basic idea of who you can pick.
EDIT: Ok...here's the complete list of Pokémon that you can choose from for your starter...
Pidgey, Rattata, Sentret, Zigzagoon, Hoot-Hoot, Bidoof, Starly
(Wow, less than I expected, to be honest, but it kinda works in my favor to help build up that whole "scarcity of Pokémon" idea )

Now, some background information and the start of the story.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Letter from an Elder's son:
The region of Helnith, located far to the east of Hoenn, is in danger.
The guardian Pokémon of the region, Salerdia, left for unknown lands five years ago and has since not returned. This has caused the land to slowly die out. The residents of the region did not realize that Salerdia and the land were linked intimately. Without one, the other perishes. So, the council of elders held a meeting, their first in over 50 years, to try and solve this problem.
That's why you have been sent from the island of Aitel (somewhat to the northeast of the Helnith mainland) to help out. Pokémon trainers are rather scarce in this region, as are Pokémon themselves, so you and your fellow Trainers may be this region's last hope.
Beware however! There have been rumors of a hostile takeover of parts of the region by a Team of bandits profitting from this situation. Team Bandra, as they would have themselves called, have enlisted the aid of many deliquent Trainers to bolster their already significant Grunt taskforce.
This, my dear friends, is the reason why you have all been called from Aitel...one of the last bastions of the region.
Take care,
Fate
Elder Aquai's son
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Ok, now, for style of play.
This'll be more similar to the War of 5/8 than several other RPG's, in that you can only control your character (and your Pokémon of course ). Everything else is up to either the other players or me ( if it involves events, non-player characters and other such niceties ).
That's about it from me for now.
I hope you decide to join up and I hope to be a good GM (Game Master).

So no Spearow ( Route 29) then? *curious*
And for those of us who haven’t played Pokemon in a while, may I humbly contribute this meager offering?
Pidgey
Rattata
Hoothoot
Sentret
Zigzagoon
Bidoof
Starly
I dunno how much use the attack info will be for this game, but there are pictures, which is always nice for those of us who like to attach a face to the stats.

Nice to see you here Kareeah!
Thank you very much for those links.
As for Spearow...I didn't even know you could Headbutt trees to find him!
But, no, you can't choose him, on the basis that he's not in the grass in that Route.
I'm sure you have a second choice, and a third choice and...
*keeps on ranting on aimlessly*
I sure hope that more people decide to join up.
Ok...while I'm here, time for some more things:
Pokémon ability:
This slipped my mind, but each Pokémon has a special ability. Just follow the links and look at the right-side of the screen...they should be around there. If a Pokémon has more than one possible ability, you get to choose the one it has at start.
(If you're still confused on this, just ask me )
Damage:
When I want to be nice and exact, I'll be using the damage calculator from:
http://pokemon.marriland.com/damage.php
Of course, the greater RP abilities of pen and paper (or rather, keyboard and thread post ) give you greater freedom of action, so it won't always be a fixed value of damage.
Example: Your Pokémon is about to be trampled.
It flies away, completely avoiding the attack.
Now, in the videogame, you can't do that (well, unless you were to use the move Fly, but it's not the same thing ).
Move Lists:
I'll be using the Move Lists from Diamond and Pearl.
You can also see them at:
http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-dp/
But, you don't have to worry about that too much though, seeing as how they learn the moves automatically.
Feel free to ask questions. Your questions help me build this RPG up!

Dun want Spearow. Want Pidgey. Or maybe Hoothoot. Still haven’t decided which for sure yet, but leaning towards Pidgey.
I just brought it up because you seemed so shocked there were only seven different Normal and/or Normal/Flying types on the starting Routes and I got to thinking, ‘There’s got to be more than that, they’re practically everywhere.’ So I went and looked.
What kind of data do I need to generate for my character? Hometown? Height, weight, hair color? Last name? Gender? What are we doing for equipment, are we starting with all the same stuff or are you going to randomly generate it or what? (Or are we going out the door in the clothes on our backs and that’s it???)
Do I need to pick the gender of whatever my starter ends up or is that randomly assigned? (If I have to pick I need to get a quarter out and decide which gender is ‘heads’ and which is ‘tails’.)
Oh, and do you want me to pester HodgePodge? I owe her spam in the inbox for the football/soccer game, so I can do so without any guilty feelings.

For your character data:
Age
Name
Gender
That's the barebone of it. Anything else you want to add is up to you.
(Of course, based on that, you might need to create a description of yourself...since Age and Gender don't do much to describe your character).
And thanks for the equipment question!
Starting Equipment:
800 PD (You know, the Pokémon currency. Some call it Pokedollars and others Yen. I'll call it PD. )
3 Poké Balls, 1 Potion, 1 Full Heal, Pokédex (you'll get these at the beginning of the game though, after the first event of the RPG)
Quote: Do I need to pick the gender of whatever my starter ends up or is that randomly assigned? (If I have to pick I need to get a quarter out and decide which gender is ‘heads’ and which is ‘tails’.)
Whatever you prefer.
I don't mind if you choose your Pokémon's gender (it shouldn't play too much of a role...yet. )
Quote: Oh, and do you want me to pester HodgePodge? I owe her spam in the inbox for the football/soccer game, so I can do so without any guilty feelings.
LOL! Go right ahead! As long as she likes Pokémon. Otherwise, your pestering will be in vain!

What age range do you recommend? I don’t plan on being a sixty-year-old, but I know in the anime they usually start out at age 10, and I don’t want to start out older than that only to have to justify why I’m JUST NOW starting out and never got around to it before this when I’m apparently willing to do so.

No worries. Worst case, she gets annoyed and my vengeance is served (and then I get banned, flunk all my classes and get hit by a falling meteorite and rendered comatose for the next twenty years, thereby missing the game and a great deal else. But I’m getting ahead of myself here). Best case, she comes in here demanding to start with Dratini, in which case I rescind all responsibility! *hides*
And let me know if I start being a pest. I’ve had a lot of homework assignments due lately so I’m making up for it by being extra-boisterous online, but if I start to get annoying I want to know.

Well, I've gathered that your real life age is about 22 right?
In any case, this isn't your usual Pokémon adventure. Basically, you've lived your life either on the island of Aitel (where you sail from to go to the mainland, once this gets started) or on one of the other regions. In any case, you won't have to justify why you just started at any age you chose (I don't think 10 year olds are prepared for this adventure, but those anime kids keep proving me wrong! )
Quote: No backpack? (Bandoliers might be fun…)
You got me! What's a bandolier?
And, of course you start with a backpack (unless you prefer to carry all of that stuff in your hands ).
Now that would be a silly sight!
Quote: Drat. Now I have to go agonize over which side to make which…hmmm…
Or you could just make both sides of the coin the same and then you have a guaranteed result...

LOL! That was a bit extreme Kareeah!
As for Dratini...you know how rare those things are? They're hard enough to catch in Pearl.

Yeah, how many times has Ash saved the world now? ‘Course by all rights he should be older than 10 by now…

Yes I do, in fact. At least in GS they weren’t in the Safari Zone, with only Safari Balls to use on the little buggers!
But they’re dragons, and they’re cute.
So as soon as I can remember how to put images into the PMs back at CH…

Assuming he gets a year older every new region...he should be about 15 now (but I don't follow the series truth be told. )

Adorable even (and so are Dragonairs for that matter ).
As for the pic thingie, I think it's

(Replace the parentheses in the above example with brackets)
That should work over at the Table PM as well.

I hunt down episodes on Youtube—no commercials, and I can catch up on the ones I missed. (I lost track of the series around the end of Johto/start of Hoenn saga when the games jumped over to the DS and the adapter on my Gameboy broke, and only started getting back into the whole mess a few months ago.) Most of the important ones seem to end up on there.
(Except for the ones concerning the Lake of Rage. I wanted to see those since Ash first got to Ecruteak and started going in the other direction, blast it, and I can’t find them anywhere.)

Ooo! Ooo! Question I keep forgetting to ask—how are attacks set up? Like in the games, where you only get 4 max at a time, or like in the anime?

I was thinking on a happy medium of 6 moves at a time. In any case, some moves get obsoleted in time (like Tackle being made obsolete by Body Slam, for example. )

I've never seen either of you two around here before but never the less you've managed to find my weakness and stab me in the face with it. I've been in and out of Pokemon rehab for the past few years. I thought I had recovered until they released Diamond and Pearl. Now I own a Nintendo DS, Pokemon Diamond, and 250+ Pokemon.
I guess I'll join in since it looks like it's just you two right now.
