Well let's go with Rattata for the starter since it was the original one picked, Mareep and Bellsprout. I really enjoyed those 2 the most out of all my childhood pokemon games.

As for a backstory.... hmmm.....

Just a middle aged man that used to enjoy spending time with his poke-friends till reality set in and being a grown up happened where he lost sense of whom he was. Now he's merely trying to find out who he is and enjoy his forgotten friends again.

(Figure I can meet the other characters when I'm taking my pokemon out at the Pokecenter, least I think that's where they're taken out/deposited yet)

I was already counting the Rattata when I said three so you can pick one more. And I'll have your stats up soonish. Do you have any preference for abilities/gender or shall I roll them randomly?

Pokemon Center works; I'll get your intro post up ASAP. Also, as far as how your character got to Helnith, for the last few PCs the default has been 'wander in from the wreck of a cruise ship' which occurred a day or so ago in-game. Will that work for you, or did you want to do something different?

EDIT: And your intro post is now up.

Hmmm.... Well do abilities that aren't purely combat actually have an affect on this version of Pokemon? Like....would "tail whip" actually DO anything? LOL I mean... I always went for the pure combat moves for the actual games.... *shrug* Though Sleep Powder // Stun Powder were always highly useful... Also, would such moves only affect pokemon or could they be used to affect people // electrical devices as well? Is it like the game? Or the TV show? "Rattata quick attack to dodge it, then counter with bite!"

Also I suppose that could work, wrecked cruise ship vacation taken to get away from a bad job. Bumped my head and have no idea who I am, where I'm from, anything about pokemon, etc (fits my IRL basically LOL)

To answer your question: in general, attacks do what you'd expect in the games. However, instead of calling for an attack you can tell your Pokemon to evade (which makes them harder to hit for the rest of the round) or defend itself (halves all attack damage the Pokemon takes for the rest of the round). So if you had your Gameboy screen in front of you it would read:

Attack
Defend
Evade
Item
Switch
(...)

You can be a little more creative here than you can in the handheld games though. So yes, you can target the trainers or bits of the scenery—Mark and Mina have both helped bring down helicopters with their Pokemon before. Do note that it doesn't always work though—well-trained Pokemon can and will take hits for their trainers, and of course if you go around attacking other trainers during friendly matches you're liable to be brought up on assault charges. Another thing we've done is have our Pokemon intercept attacks for other Pokemon. For example Mina might tell her Sandshrew to intercept for her Pidgey, since the former is immune to Electric attacks.

Speaking of attacks – we're using the Generation IV movesets for Pokemon by default. There will be move tutors and such in the world for learning later Generation moves, your Pokemon just won't get them through normal leveling up.

For Rattata—
(Abilities – pick one)
Run Away: Keeps the Pokemon from being trapped by wild Pokemon.
Guts: Raises Attack if suffering from a major status effect (Burn, Paralysis, Poison, Sleep...)

(Attacks – pick six)
Tackle
Tail Whip*
Quick Attack
Focus Energy
Bite
Pursuit
Hyper Fang
Sucker Punch
Crunch
Assurance

For Bellsprout—
(Abiltiy (Bellsprout can only have the one) – )
Chlorophyll - Raises Speed in harsh sunlight (as in from Sunny Day, Dought, etc.)

(Attacks – )
Vine Whip
Growth
Wrap
Sleep Powder
Poison Powder
Stun Spore

For Mareep—
(Ability (Mareep can only have the one) – )
Static – If an enemy attack makes contact, there's a 30% chance that Pokemon will be Paralyzed.

(Attacks – )
Tackle
Growl
Thundershock
Thunder Wave
Cotton Spore

*Reminder for the houserule: Stat reducing moves that hit more than one target (Leer, Growl, Tail Whip, String Shot etc…), will hit 10 targets for every 10 levels the user has (ie. Levels 1-10 will hit 10, levels 11 – 20 will hit 20, and so on). Also Smokescreen and Sand Attack are multi-target under this system.

And one more thing (since it's come up before) - catching Pokemon works like it does in the games. So don't knock the Pokemon out if you want to catch it, and your captured Pokemon warp off to the box system once you get more than six.

So much learning to be done....jeepers creepers what'd I draft myself into!?

Let's see... Ratman will be Guts-y
Attacks shall be:
Quick
Pursuit
Bite
Sucker Punch (great movie btw!)
Crunch (dark move I believe?) and
Assurance (though I've no idea what this move does :/ )

I imagine since moves weren't quite listed for Bellsprout or Mareep that they're at where they should be for abilities = level... Probably should evolve them huh?! (btw, if ya'll are laughing at the old noob, it's alright, I'm used to it)

Try this site if you've got questions as to what a particular attack does.

Bellsprout and Mareep haven't learned enough potential moves that you needed to pick which ones to keep. Our limit in this game is six rather than four like the handhelds.

And before I forget, we have EVs set up differently than in the handhelds too—you get them on level up for every level after level 5 and can assign them wherever you want. So your Rattata has 20 EVs to assign and the other two have 15. Here are their stats right now so you know what you're working with:

At the bar I shall simply observe as I'm far from familiar with this battle system ya'll are using. As well as am clueless about what EV's are.... I mean the last handheld edition I played was like....Sapphire // Ruby? LOL I don't want to prevent progress of the other people, so... I'll stick to a "loner for learning" path

@gorman You don't have to allocate your EVs right away if you're not sure, you just won't get any benefit from them until you do.

@Alkar: Yes.

For the random numbers as far as you crit/you did X damage/you hit the Pokemon, I use the Order of the Stick Forums, which has a built in dice roller (see sig). For the Pokemon stats, I set up formulas in Excel.

Oooooo.... I use a website called Roll20 for online D&D sessions that I could use for my dice rolling, could simply copy/paste the results :/ idk if that'll work for all of the requirements. I mean I clicked your link but it all confuses this simpleton lol

It's a separate forum from this one. You roll dice like so:

Crit: [roll]1d100[/roll]
Damage: [roll]1d4+15[/roll]

That said, I have no problem if you'd rather use Roll20, just link your rolls.

Did they change the video games where you can only heal a pokemon and that takes it's whole turn? :/ You can't heal and fight on right away? Man that seems poopy... I thought they could still attack right away as wasting a potion to have your pokemon lose its HP right after healing seems like a huge waste now! LOL

I completely forgot about this part... Uhm... given the region we're in, which of the remaining would be a better take along?
Geodude? (solid choice with his huge defense)
Machop? (solid fighter type, hits hard)
Gastly? (Immunity to normal moves! Strong against most other types! amazing potential!) or
Poliwag? (Can become one great water type)

??? As far as I know it's ALWAYS been that way. Picking between switching, applying a potion, or attacking and hoping your opponent gets knocked out is part of the strategy. Otherwise it would be a long stream of Full Restore -> attack -> opponent knocked down to 5 HP, opponent heals -> attacks -> you're knocked down to 5 HP, and so on.

Fire, Rock/Ground and Fighting Pokemon are all relatively common in Helnith, so any of the ones you want would be good.

If fire, rock/ground, and fighting are all common I guess....Poliwag would be the safest bet ? Though.... fire and fighting wouldn't harm Gastly too much..... arggggggggggggggh I hate these tough decisions! They're both great and get powerful though all these new aspects to the game make my brain hurt lol

*sigh*

After a 1d100 roll, the odds say I shall pick Gastly. I gave all 4 a fair shot at 25% and Gastly's number came up. So he'll be the last resort or....something....idk where I was trying to go there.... Was aiming for something clever but am looking quite foolish....
