The critical difference being that the Missingno glitch can fry your game (as in your cartridge...literally!  ). The item duplication glitches in Gold/Silver/Emerald are foolproof (worst case scenario if you mess up in Emerald is that you wipe the Pokémon to be duplicated off the face of your game). 
You see, the Missingno glitch writes garbage data over the relevant data in the cartridge. If you have a copy of Red/Blue, encounter it and notice that the game stalls out a bit. The games saves (without your permission  ) every time you encounter the pixelated "glob".
But, even so, I miss those days. It was good fun encountering Lv.255 Rhydons!

Tackle
Double-Edge
Surf
Surf (yup, twice in one set...somehow)

Yeah, and it screwed over your hall of fame, too, which was annoying. Still. Dozens of Master Balls and Rare Candies up to my sprite's eyeballs! (And I was lucky.)
Speaking of which, I want to complain about the trainer selections. All the female sprites are ugly! Why? I have to play as a guy to get an even halfway-decent looking character! All (s)he does is run around and look pretty, (s)he doesn't get any lines or anything, why can't they make them look nicer? The only real saving grace is that they're so tiny on the world map... *sigh*

To be honest, in Diamond and Pearl, I think the female character looks better.
By the way, do you have the newer portable systems? You should go get Emerald *nudges Kareeah*. 
I got Kyogre today!
And I migrated the following Pokémon to my Pearl Version:
1. Swampert (darned Hoenn starter)
2. Clamperl (too lazy to fish for them in Pearl)
3. Milotic (getting a Feebas is nearly impossible in Pearl)
4. Sandshrew (you can't get them in Diamond or Pearl  )
5. Anorith (couldn't seem to find its fossil in Pearl)
6. Gardevoir (no real reason, to be honest. )
But, you have to wait 24 hours between migrations (to prevent excessive abuse of the glitch, I guess.)

No I do not, which is why I don't have anything past Gold and Silver (and my adaptor broke for that, so I need to get batteries--nice rechargable ones, as I'll go through them like candy if I don't--if I want to play either of them any time soon).
I do however, have a Best Buy gift certificate...just burning a hole in my pocket...so I'm considering moving forward (at long last!) into the realms of Sinnoh and Hoenn. What do you recommend, aside from Emerald?

Hmm...for Pokémon, Emerald is the Hoenn game of choice (Ruby and Sapphire are vastly inferior, which is why you'll never find Emerald below $30 and Ruby/Sapphire are in the lowly twenties. ).
If you get a DS, then the choice between Diamond and Pearl boils down to what exclusive legendary you want and what other "unique to that version" Pokémon you want:
Diamond - Dialga - Steel/Dragon
Pearl - Palkia - Water/Dragon
But, a quick glance at the GameFAQS walkthroughs can help you in that department better than I can.
As for non-Pokemon games, I really haven't played any other GBA games except The Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap. That was pretty fun. If you're a fan of Zelda, go get it. Otherwise, you might not want to.
Anyways, methinks it's time to update the RPG...

I was wondering if FireRed and/or LeafGreen were worth getting...the Gameboy games can't transfer into R/S/E and D/P, can they?

No, they can't...
The game changed a lot from G/S/C to the third generation (I was peeved as well when I found out...I had a copy of Gold here).
And, sure, go ahead and get FireRed/LeafGreen (the reason I haven't gotten it yet is because I'm trying to get my cousin to start playing again... ).
Squirtle - Raikou
Bulbasaur - Entei
Charmander - Suicune
Once you beat the game, the legendary dog roaming Kanto is the one next to the starter you start with (the stuff you learn in walkthroughs. )
And, if you don't mind using an Action Replay to activate Events ( which the average human being would never go to a Nintendo Event to do), you can get Ho-Oh and Lugia in a hidden location as well.
Action Replay "Fun" (List of Pokémon that are Event-Only in the following games)
FireRed/LeafGreen
Deoxys
Ho-Oh
Lugia
Emerald
Mew (MEW! )
Latias/Latios (the one you choose not to capture will be in an event-only island, holding Soul Dew, which increases Latias/Latios Sp.Def and Sp.Atk drastically)
But, I'm allergic to hex editors...they can mess up your game...

Besides Stripes (who's points for now are all going into speed)
Split the points 50/50 between att and spec. att. with any odd ammounts going into att.
If the battle continues with his charizard, pulling out Evan. If not, will let stripes rest and use hedge. Soon as charizard is up, Evan will come out.

@Kareeah: Well, Dove and Fate are bloodied up and can barely get up. You're not so bloodied up, and you can somewhat easily get up. The others are somewhat bloodied up, but their ability to stand themselves is not affected. (LOL! Did that make any sense? )
