Ariados uses Shadow Sneak!

The bewildered Fighting type takes a wild swing that winds up unbalancing it and sends it careening into a wall. It has to lean on the wall afterwards to pull itself to its feet, but it manages.

The Grunts, meanwhile, are starting to look worried themselves. There is a little arguing on the other side of the field before another Graveler ((Graveler B, the sleeping one is now Graveler A)) materializes on the field.

Mark almost jumped with joy. "Yes, great going guys! Alright, Kirlia hit the Machoke with confusion one more time, Ariados use Fury Swipes on Magnemite and Houndoom, please use Bite on the Graveler!" That one move had improved his battle standing by quite a bit. Most fortunate.

Mark almost slapped himself in the face. "Sorry Oodramere, I forgot that you know Bubblebeam, not bubble. Could you use that on the Graveler please? Kirlia, try to hold on just a bit longer and use confusion on that Machoke. Ariados, use nightshade on the fighting type as well." Hopefully now that he had given Oodramere an attack that it actually knew, it would be able to use it.

You recall Kirlia!
You send out Taillow!

Ariados knocks the conscious Machoke out and starts chewing on the Fighting type before the latter is recalled.

Machoke A's Speed falls!

"Screw this!"

The Grunts have had enough and start to retreat, pulling out of the hall and back the way they came in. You can still distantly hear fighting going on, but it seems you have some breathing space.

The door the Machoke slammed into earlier creaks open and you can see the Coordinators who hid behind it before the battle peer out. Once it's clear that Bandra is elsewhere, they approach you shyly.

"Hi...we saw your fight...and you were really brave..." The girls hold out a few objects for you to take. "We...we wanted you to have these." In their hands are a necklace with a tear-drop pendant, a shiny metal canister, and a bright red Berry.

Mark took the items with the hint of a blush. "W-well it really wasn't anything... uh... thanks. Say, do you have any way to heal pokemon in here?" While he had, barely, won this battle, his entire team was in pretty bad shape. Oh, but he still had a few pokemon standing, and one of them... "Say, Tailow? Mind using Double Team a few times while we wait and focus energy too?" Just in case he had to fight again, he wanted at least one of his pokemon to be dang near unhittable and buffed. (Woohoo, maximum dodge rate here I come!) Oh, and the girls were still here, that's right. Turning back to them, Mark sheepishly stuttered, "I... uh... I have to admit that I sort of... uh... I sort of got lost back here... do you know if there is an unblocked exit?"

Mark:

Taillow's form blurs and soon there are dozens of copies of the little bird cluttering up the hall—somewhat to the consternation of the trainers trailing in from the other branch of the hall.

"W-well it really wasn't anything... uh... thanks. Say, do you have any way to heal pokemon in here?"

"There's usually a healing machine by the main stage, for the Battle rounds." The girl with the Budew points to your left and behind you, where you notice another hall splitting off opposite of the way Bandra retreated.

"...do you know if there is an unblocked exit?"

Both girls shake their heads, and the rearmost answers aloud: "We were in there" she gestures to the door they came out of and the dressing room beyond it, which they'd taken shelter in "we don't have any better idea of where Bandra is than you do. Sorry."

((All of that and ONLY Tailow leveled? Wow, that hurts...))

"There's usually a healing machine by the main stage, for the Battle rounds."

"Alright, if they didn't go towards it then they probably don't know it's there... so it should be safe enough for us to get there and for me to heal my pokemon up." Mark said, periodically glancing back at the hallway to make sure no one else came out at them randomly. "We're going to need everything we can get to take these guys down and get out of here."

"We were in there" she gestures to the door they came out of and the dressing room beyond it, which they'd taken shelter in "we don't have any better idea of where Bandra is than you do. Sorry."

He hesitated and then sighed. "Do you girls think you can stay behind me and cover my back from Bandra attacks?" It was really the only way he could make sure they would be safe... well, as safe as he could make them, at least. Which may turn out to be not very, with the condition his team was in. After healing his pokemon up, though, that should be a different story.

((Don't worry, there's more XP coming up... ))

"Do you girls think you can stay behind me and cover my back from Bandra attacks?"

They both hesitate, but the girl with the Budew nods and her friend doesn't protest.

----------------

Mina:

((Since Alkar's not interested in running the Grunts...))

"Natu, Nightshade that Graveler! Pikachu, Rock Smash it!" Mina thought about ordering her youngest off the ground, but decided her best bet was to do as much damage as quickly as possible and try to weed out the Grunt Pokemon before they overwhelmed her own. She was also very guiltily aware she was using her Electric type as bait; if they tried a Magnitude, half her Pokemon were immune and they might wipe out some of their own in the process. "Pidgey, Twister those four ((Graveler, Geodude, Mankey, Sentret))!" This was less of a risk; she could hope Pidgey could take out one of the Fighting types with Gust, but she needed that Graveler down NOW and Gust wouldn't be much use there. "Sandshrew—" Mina bit off a curse. "Magikarp, my dear, I need you to intercept the first Rock move they throw our way. Do you understand? You're not weak to Rock moves so you can protect the others!"

Magikarp flopped energetically in response; Mina couldn't even tell if she was enthusiastic or upset, and was not inspired to confidence.

Natu uses Nightshade!
Graveler is hit for 23 damage! ((Got to train Natu some more! ))

Pikachu uses Rock Smash! ((Roll = 61))
It's super effective!
Graveler is hit for 10 damage!

Pidgey uses Twister! ((Roll = 65, 13, 86, 57))
Graveler is hit for 12 damage!
Geodude is hit for 19 damage!
Geodude flinches!
Sentret is hit for 15 damage!
Mankey is hit for 15 damage!

They're really slow... Mina noted to herself. Maybe we can take advantage of that?

Sandshrew 1 uses Sand Attack!
Pidgey's Keen Eye prevents Accuracy loss!
All other allied Pokemons' Accuracy falls!

Graveler uses Rollout! ((Roll = 45))

Mina's fists clenched as she watched the lumbering Rock type bear down on her starter—

—Magikarp leaped into the living boulder's path, spoiling its aim but hurting herself in the process. Mina turned her anxiety to her fish; it wasn't the Pokemon's fault she only had two attacks (and both of them nigh-useless against the Graveler). If the odds weren't already stacked against her, Mina wouldn't even have sent her out, but right now even being an extra target on the field was helpful.

Magikarp is hit for 28 damage!

Mina let out a sign of relief as her fish flopped a little after the hit—quite battered, but still conscious and, as far as Mina could tell, not seriously hurt. Magikarp even managed to flip herself upright onto her fins, something she had previously not managed. Mina did give herself a mental kick when she realized she hadn't given Magikarp an Oran Berry on switching her in to the team, and mentally vowed to remedy that after they got through this.

Machop uses Seismic Toss!
Pidgey is hit for 25 damage!

Sandshrew 2 uses Poison Sting! ((Roll = 100))
Pikachu is hit for 6 damage!

The Geodude was still in the process of picking itself up after the windy battering it had recieved from Pidgey.

Sentret uses Slam! ((Roll = 100))
Attack missed! ((I have got to stop giving these Grunts moves with < 100% Accuracy. ))

Mina felt slightly embarrassed for the Normal type as it went careening past Pikachu.

Mankey uses Scratch!

Magikarp, already quite battered from the earlier attack, went down and this time didn't flop up again. Mina glared as she recalled her fish.

"Aww, whatsa matter? Is the little girl sad because her fishie was too weak to battle?" one of the Grunts cooed, then his tone turned scathing. "Next time use a real Pokemon, brat!"

REAL POKEMON?!! You're going down for that...

((Round results:

Natu: 58/58 (Accuracy down 1 level)
Pikachu: 48/54 (Accuracy down 1 level)
Pidgey: 40/65
Magikarp: 0/35

Mankey: 28/43
Machop: 77/77
Sentret: 33/48))

Mina surveyed the Grunt Pokemon; fortunately, Natu's Nightshade was easy to predict the damage for, so she felt reasonably confident she didn't have to have her remaining Pokemon concentrate all their effort on the Graveler. Assuming they could hit, of course.

"Natu, Nightshade that Graveler again! Pidgey, Twister, same targets! Pikachu!" Mina considered putting a condition on her next call, but decided against it—if Pidgey and Natu didn't take the Graveler out, Pidgey and Pikachu couldn't. "Rock Smash that Geodude!"

Mina heard some arguing amoung the Grunts; one was pointing to the Pokemon Center, another to the Mart. Then the lull in the battle ended, and she couldn't hear anything over the sounds of Pokemon attacks.

Natu uses Nightshade! ((Roll = 48)) ((Whew! *wipes away sweat*))
Graveler is hit for 23 damage!

Pikachu uses Rock Smash! ((Roll = 72)) ((Roll = 12))

Her youngest's aim was off (no doubt from the sand) and Mina could tell; nevertheless the little Electric type just barely managed to impact her target. Off-balance from trying to dodge the watery-eyed Electric type, the Geodude took the hit soundly and Mina heard its thick armor crack.

It's super effective!
Geodude is hit for 13 damage!
Geodude's Defense falls!
Pikachu's Shell Bell restores 1 HP!

Pidgey uses Twister! ((Roll = 79, 76, 56, 55))
Graveler is hit for 11 damage!
Graveler faints!
Geodude is hit for 18 damage! ((So close! :\))
Sentret is hit for 16 damage!

You make your way to the spot the Coordinators indicated without further harassment from Bandra, though the building shakes and you can hear the cries of Pokemon and trainers from time to time. But when you arrive the machine is missing, a long scrape of paint trailing down the wall from where it reportedly sat.

"Someone must have moved it," suggests the girl with the Budew. "Maybe they took it that way?" She points down the line of scraped paint; there you can see a door cracked open, and the sound of someone rummaging around inside comes from within.

"That's just a storage room," replies her friend, looking confused. "Why would anyone bother to move the machine there?"

Mina:

Mina went over her supplies in her head, trying to think if she had anything that would help. That Liechi Berry would be helpful if she had time to give it to one of her Pokemon without getting them knocked out. Or pity she didn't have something similar for Special Attack; judging by the previous rounds of blows, Pidgey wouldn't be able to finish off that Sentret in one hit as it was.

Drat it, there's a Pokemon Center right behind me, there's got to be some way to distract these guys long enough to use it!

It was gradually dawning on her that she was going to lose this, which meant that she needed to switch from trying to win outright to trying to draw this out as long as possible. There was, after all, a Contest Hall full of possible allies nearby; even with Bandra blocking them in, sooner or later some of them would make it out and come this way. She only needed to hold out until help arrived.

Most of them are going after Pidgey...

Thinking quickly, Mina recalled her starter, pulled out a Super Potion and applied it to Pikachu. With luck (although she didn't seem to have much of that at the moment) the Bandra Pokemon wouldn't have time to change targets and would waste their attacks. Once that was done she sent off a hasty text to Mark, hoping and praying he was somewhere nearby and able to assist:

~At Pokemon Center need help!~

Mina recalls Pidgey!

Mina uses a Super Potion on Pikachu!
Pikachu regains 40 HP!

Pity I don't have many more of those. She had one left after that, so she doubted she'd be able to hold out much longer regardless, but she had to try.

Sandshrew 1 uses Rollout!
Attack missed due to recall!

And of course the Sandshrew has a Rock move, Mina thought bitterly.

Machop uses Seismic Toss!
Attack missed due to recall!

Somewhat to Mina's relief, her dirty trick seemed to be working.

Sandshrew 2 uses Poison Sting! ((Roll = 49))
Critical hit!
Pikachu is hit for 14 damage!

Geodude uses Rock Throw!
Attack missed due to target recall!

Sentret uses Slam! ((Roll = 31))
Pikachu is hit for 26 damage!

Mankey uses Scratch!
Pikachu is hit for 10 damage!

((Round Results:

Natu: 0/58
Pikachu: 4/54 (Accuracy down 1 level)
Pidgey: 11/65 (recalled)
Magikarp: 0/35

Graveler: 0/70
Geodude: 2/52 (Defense down 1 level)
Sandshrew 1: 67/67 (Defense up 1 level)
Sandshrew 2: 58/58
Mankey: 11/43
Machop: 77/77
Sentret: 17/48))

Mina had a choice to make now. She was fairly certain Pidgey could take out that Geodude, and the Mankey, and maybe the Sentret too if she had him use Twister exclusively and Bandra focused their attacks on Pikachu while she was the only one on the field. But that Sandshrew wasn't going to go down so easily. And neither of her Pokemon was going to last more than one more hit without a Super Potion—of which she had exactly one left.

I really wish I hadn't used so many of those against Pellana, now. ((Although Mark probably appreciates the Attack boost on Houndoom. ))

She wasn't sure Pikachu could survive the next round even with her last Super Potion and Twister weeding out the weaker Bandra Pokemon. So she may be doomed. But if that Sandshrew's Rollout hit, combined with the type advantage, Pidgey would be going down whether she gave him the Super Potion or not, once Bandra refocused their attacks.

Mina thought briefly about Sand Attack, but that would only increase her odds of not being hit, and given the number of Pokemon still left on the field she thought chances were good several of them would land attacks anyway. I probably should have opened up with that; then we might not be in this mess.

Mina called out Pidgey again. "Pidgey! Twister Geodude, Sandshrew ((1)), Mankey and Sentret!" That would definitely take out two of them, though the Sandshrew was going to remain a danger and the Sentret would probably survive too. Still she had to try.

Mina used a Super Potion on Pikachu!
Pikachu regains 50 HP!

Pidgey uses Twister! ((Roll = 13, 94, 29, 95))
Sandshrew 1 is hit for 15 damage!
Sandshrew 1 flinched! ((...should have given the Super Potion to Pidgey after all. *cheers anyway*))
Geodude is hit for 16 damage!
Geodude faints!
Sentret is hit for 14 damage!
Mankey is hit for 15 damage!
Mankey faints!

"*******ed *****, make up your ****ing mind!" griped one of the Grunts.

Machop uses Seismic Toss!
Pikachu is hit for 25 damage!

Sandshrew 2 uses Poison Sting! ((Roll = 12))
Critical hit! ((Again!))
Pikachu is hit for 14 damage!
Pikachu is Poisoned!

Sentret uses Slam! ((Roll = 39))
Pikachu is hit for 25 damage!
Pikachu faints!

Mina recalled Pikachu, face mask-like. This was it.

"Okay Pidgey, Sand Attack the Grunts!"

Mina gave her bird just enough time to perform the attack before recalling him and bolting for the Center doors. She felt the wound on her chest protest but ignored it, intent on getting to the healing machine before Bandra could stop her or disable it.

She never saw the attack that knocked her out.

Mark:

You hear a startled curse and the sound of something crashing. "No!" whoever-it-is hastily—and nervously—assures you. "Everything's perfectly fine, quite fine, really." You hear the sounds of Pokeballs opening and see flashes of white light through the crack.

((Oh dear, those guys are going to be waiting for me once I leave...))

"Hey man, we aren't Bandra!" Mark calls back, gesturing for Tailow to get in front of him and Ariados to move just barely above the door. "We just need to use the healing machine. Alright?" and then his pocket buzzed at him, "Hmm, I just got a text... Mina? Crap, hey I need to use that machine now, one of my friends is in danger and needs my help, asap."

Mark:

"Ah...Sure, come right in!" You hear a low muttering and the sound of something scattering lightly on the floor.

Mark looked at the girls and muttered, "Follow closely. If anything jumps out at me, hit it with everything you've got." He then advanced towards the door cautiously. "Alright, I'm coming in now. I would feel a whole lot better about this if you recalled your pokemon..." He said hopefully, hand on the door. He looked up at Ariados and whispered, "If anything unfriendly happens, use shadow step to get in and then go ahead and maul whoever is in there. Not fatally, of course, but... effectively?"
