Town Portal
Just teleport yourself to defend your castle in the turn before your enemy reaches it. It also helps a lot when you need to colect troops from many castles.

Yes town portal is overpowerd, and it is a winning spell on most L/XL maps.
However there are maps, where the game last not longer than a month. On these maps starting with ChLightning or MShower helps you a lot.
As far as battles are concerned:
-counterstrike (4)
-ressurection (1)
-berrserk (2)
-armageddon (with blackies, effrets, golems_
-clone (3)
-prayer (5)

depends on which is greater: hero development? or creature growth?
for battles, if hero development is greater ... where spell power is HUUUUGGE compared to creature amount (like dw, hg):
assuming magics are at expert
1- resurrection
2- chain lightning
3- meteor shower
4- armageddon (depending fully on your units)
5- prayer
6- beserk
7- clone
8- inferno
9- counterstrike
10- frenzy
11- slayer
note: in these scenarios, direct damage spells kick @$$
for battles where creature growth is greater:
assuming magics are at expert
1- prayer
2- beserk
3- counterstrike
4- clone
5- frenzy
6- resurrection
7- CL
8- slayer (if applicable)
9- MS
10- arma
11- inferno
for battles where both hero development and creature growth are about equal:
1- prayer
2- resurrection
3- beserk
4- CL
5- counterstrike
6- clone
7- meteor shower
8- armageddon
9- frenzy
10- inferno
11- slayer

I'm gonna say Chain Lightning simply because I use it constantly and it rarely dissapoints me. I also think that town portal is incredible. I often use it to get from one corner of the map to the other when I am in a hurry.

Armageddon, Berzerk, Chain Lightning...
There's lots of ways to hurt your opponent in a battle, but there's only one Town Portal.
That is an amazingly useful spell.

I really couldn't say what, if any, is BEST, but my favourite would be Town Portal for sure! I always take earth magic if I am given a chance, and one time I built a level 4 guild and had TP and ress, thought I was in heaven!
I have noticed the computer tends not to build mana vortexes in dungeon towns too soon also, so with expert earth & air I got a spellbinders hat in the last dragon's blood map utopia, didn't take long at all to mop up the competition. I also used view air and view earth to good effect here. Guess that sorta answers some of my favourite 1st, 4th, and 5th level spells

Town portal, the other spell in HOMMIII which was over-powered, and they ditched this one too (the other was dimension door). Movement is essential in HOMM (anyone here try to avoid Logistics?), so spells that enhance movement in some way are really powerful. When they in addition are so unrestricted (cast x times per day, only limited by spellpoints), they're way too powerful.
A question regarding Armageddon (yeah, I'm a wussy, been afraid to try): If the spell kills all creatures on the battlefield, what then? Does anyone win? What about artifacts? XP?

Town Portal
I don't need to explain why, do I? I think it's everyone's favourite, we all agree, right?
As for battles, I'd go for Prayer. 3 spells in one and the most useful ones too.
Berserk is for huge battles. I don't use it a lot. Of course, we're looking at the general case. No use berserking 100 boards in 3 stacks when you can use a simple
Chain Lighteningthe best offensive spell. One blow, five stacks.
Inferno is worst spell, methinks. Such a shame I have it almost always in my favourite town!

Just a few things I have noticed:
1. Almost any spell can be usefull in the right circumstances. A lot can be done with the right spell at the right time. Yes chain lightning is usually a better attack spell than inferno, but if you only have inferno, you just make the best of it, as with anything.
2. If armageddon kills all creatures? Never done that, but was in a battle that I won, but only had summoned elementals left at the end. It was an assualt on a necro town against a necromancer and I didn't have any other heroes close enough to see if the hero survived, but I do know that he got a ton of skels in the town from the necromancy skill.
3. I am nowhere near the skill of many, if not most, of the people posting here!

I've tried doing this in Heroes II and it just played out as if I had lost, except both my hero and the enemy hero dissapeared.

If you and your opponent both run out of armies, then both of your heroes are taken off the board. Same goes if you win the battle with only summoned elementals remaining.

T-portal
If you use it correctly, almost always gurantees a win. Only thing can beat it is perhaps d-door or fly. Only perhaps... I think t-portal usually better than d-door.
Even on small maps... as long as there are 2 towns, and more than one way to go between them on the ground, t-portal should win.
