Yes, I already do it with the purple hydras.
Other creatures: the 3 mages (mage, archmage and battle mage), which shoot on the crystal (if there is a battle mage next to the crystal (using Dampen magic)).

i guess i should clarify: it's not a creature that has 1-tile range multi-attack(no hydras, cerberi, war dancers, rakshahashaksas, etc.)that i am thinking of, and only under certain circumstances can it attack the crystal and not make it explode.

Death Knight triggering Deadly Strike which replaces normal damage but does nothing?
Shooter against 40-level Shadya with expert Evasion? Though I'm not sure if any effects can reduce damage below 1.

lol @warmonger;  you definitely get an "A" for effort, not sure if those work, but they're not what i'm thinking of
actually it is a standard melee attack by a certain creature, not a special attack, and it only happens under the right circumstance.
unfortunately i can't give any hints because it will reveal too much!

I think the only logical solution is Storm Titans Storm call ability. I tested and it doesnt destroy it.

ok the answer is lava dragon, but only if it hits a target past the crystal
the crystal resists the lava dropping(which apparently protects it from the liquid flame breath) and consequently does not explode

I say this is a bug, not an intended mechanic.
If this quiz turned into "hey guess what another bug I found while living my life in homm5", then it truly lives up to its name - insanely hard.

Why a bug? The resistance line has to be written in. This sounds more like Jinxer not knowing that vampirism doesn't work on a ranged attack and claiming it as a bug.

What resistance line? Liquid Flame Breath says: In addition to normal damage blah blah. So regardless of that stupid firewall or whatever, the lava drags should deal normal damage to the crystal. Since the crystal has 1hp, it should blow up. Period. That it does not is by no means normal.
As for vampirism, even the tooltip says - drain just like vampires. So, ignoring how wrong some tooltips may be, this one nails it. Do vampires shoot? No. Can vampires suck life on ranged attacks? No. So I don't get it why any ranged creature should be able to.

So you wrongly asked your question. Hitting the unit at the back of another one is not a direct attack. Its not even dealing original amount of damage, just 50%
