Gods- an idea
Ok, We all know bits and pieces of mythology, of great gods and little ones, of Earth, Sky, Lanterns, the Future, war and the underworld. they are fascinating characters, some of them honest, others lecherous, more power mad dominator's wanting everything they can get their divine hands on.
this is an idea's thread. Post possibilities for scenarios, or characters, or settings, or powers, generally its an open forum relating to the subject.

The first scenario is an old one, common in many mythologies. The god wars. A time of strife and contention when a struggle for power spills over into the mortal realm. Most of the time they do this with avatars. Humans who are given access to the gods powers in order to champion their cause. However, god wars are dangerous times, for this is one time when the gods are vulnerable. Heroic humans, ancient artifacts, and other gods (or avatars) can actually kill a god forever during these times.

How about stuff from:
The Spartan Civilization (they mainly concentrated on Fighting, but they did have a religion as well)
Greek
Roman
Egyptian
Celtic Tribes (they had their religion and beliving of Gods and Goddesses)
Chinese
Japanese
I guess Norse could be included, but they did not last as long as the other ones that I mentioned so you may not find as much information.

There's also Mayan, Aztec etc and Christians
I think it would be cooler if the gods were made up, with elements borrowed from rl mythology.
Such as someone could be the god of war, but not necessarily Ares/Mars or any of the existing gods, someone else could be god of love etc..

That is essentially the idea i was having, have our own made up gods and create a scenario from there.
they generally don't have to be all-powerful tyrants. they could just be gods to particular shrines, or groves. they can freely move around, but if their shrine is attacked, they are damaged and must return.

I am willing to give it a try. Starting with something small. Luna, goddess of small woodland creatures. Her shrine is a old tree in the forest.
Powers : All her powers only works on or arround small animals. Anything larger then a fox is not counted. Teleport, can teleport to any place a small animal is as long as it is within 200'. She can multiteleport (from one animal to another).
She can control a small number of small animals at a time. Will start out three or four and work up as time goes on.
Transform : can change shape to a small animal and back once a day (for now).
Will work the rest out later.

No shyte
Celtic mythology is actually one of the most complex ones around. It was far from just gods and goddesses. And IMO it's more civilized than, for example, Greek mythology (where you have dozens of myths including incest, rape, murder, devouring children etcetera).
Celts were just a bit more... uncompromising in methods of worship (human sacrifices and stuff).
And I didn't know there's any difference between the Spartan and the Greek religion...? I mean, they're the same people and stuff...
I think this is a great idea. I especially like the part where we create our own deities (the Mighty Banana God... Mmmmm...)
We can call it Pantheon or something.

That's the idea Banana God, Chocolatus - the Chocolate Bringer of the Gods (parody of Hermes ), Namus, KD, etc...
Now really I know the bulgarian and the Slavic mythology.

This would be driven down to a mere joke as soon as people seriously want to play as Namus or Qupting. Real deities should be kept out of this.

On a more serious note, I think this is a thoroughly enjoyable concept. I mean, everyone likes to play god every now and then. That's why the Populous series and the like are so popular.
Although I do not yet know if I'll participate (but I just might), I already have an idea for my chracter(s). Feel free to incorporate them in the story in some minor way before I do decide to join.
The Divine Senate would be several beings of no sense of individuality. Kinda like the Auditors of the Discworld, but sans the hilarity.
The Divine Senate is the god (or gods) of law and order, regulating the careful ballance between all forces of the universe through careful legislation. The Senate rarely leaves their Palace of Naught, a place disliked by most other deities. In the Palace of Naught, all but the most basic of a deity's supernatural powers cease to function.
The Senate rarely shows any emotion at all and seemingly doesn't do much of anything at all. Their cryptic ways are understood by few, if anyone.
The Senate frowns at anything random and disorderly, like most of life. This does not mean that the Senate is evil or seeks to destroy all living things. The Senate knows no good or evil. They aim to bring order.
I hope this fits the setting you folks end up with.

Quote: Banana God
No, no, it's the Mighty Banana God. Not just Banana God. He's a deity I came up with over a year ago if I recall correctly, as part of my contest with my pal about who can make a cooler cult. Later, though, I embraced the Mighty Banana God as one of the aspects of Xurax, the Tomato-Headed God of Grunge. Mighty is Xurax to have such aspects.
But I'd play this seriously. At least as seriously as a god can get...
The four Warhammer Chaos Gods would also be a nice source of inspiration, to dwell out of the regular mythologies.
So would we be able to send out heroes and name our chosen ones and drive civilizations to greatness? And would we play in our world or in a parallel one? Can we create our chosen peoples, do they erect monuments in our honor, does that give us greater power, how often can they build something for us, do we influence the world map as we progress or destroy, are there fantasy races and creatures in existence, do we create our own mythological creatures such as Hydra or Cerberus...? Questions abound.
Everyone could have their own planar realm, such as the Planes of Fire or the Everlasting Pools or whatever (everyone can make a map of their realm if they want), which would fit their element. That realm would be their final sanctuary, and generally inaccessible to anyone but the most exalted of their followers. Should a god's chosen people or all followers be destroyed, the god would return to his realm and heal for a long, long time until he regains his power and returns back.
How does that sound?

Agreed. Also, I'd suggest going for fiction. No Greek, Norse, Egyptian or other gods from real world religions. Completely fictional world with fantasy races and whatnot. And I'd cut down on the civilization aspect. The mortals should act more as a background for scale and not the game's focus.
