To be ranged or not to be ranged? dungeon dilemma
with the ToE expansion pack the dungeon faction faces a important choice. to be ranged or not to be ranged. the object of this post is to discuss the pros ond cons or a full melee army or one with the usual two or one ranged units. heres what I make of it.
Pros: with an all melee army you are able to rush the opponate right away and engage them idealy with a one on one fight. using that tactic you can take advantage of the other shooters melee penalty. the other thing that you can use is the foul hydra's six headed attack as well as its poison blood. the dragons incinerating breath also comes into play here. also you gain the invisability ability for stalkers and shadow mistress.
cons: number one of course is that you lose the ability to have a unit not actualy engaged in combat but still hurting the enemy, esp usful in a close battle. the other thing is you lose the poison ability assasins have. another thing that is not the best is for early game against neutrals you don't have a ranged unit, good for keeping early losses low. Finaly during sieges the only unit you have who can hit people before the walls are down is your hero.
and then there is always the option of keeping one ranged unit but the prob withthis is that you have to pick an extream either the lowest unit is ranged or the second strongest is.
so now that I have laid down the pros and cons tell me what you think.

Actuall, the stalker's invisibility keeps your losses at a minimum, because he is invisible, while the hero destroys your opponents with his powerful magic. Just be sure to keep your mana full. At least, that's what I learned from those experienced dungeon players.

yes i usually prefer stalkers also.. the real dilemma is for the 6th tier unit.. do you go for range or melee?
again invisibility is really nice.. and the whip strike is quite powerful.. then again having no ranged units could wind up hurting you... a LOT

go for shadow mistresses. They are thousands times more useful than matriarchs.
Stalkers and assassins don't have a big impact on the final battles, but since invisibility has been nerfed in 3.1, stalkers are no longer infinitely better. I think they are still better, though

If you use Eruina, you will certainly want Shadow Matriarch .
I think it is wise to use melee units instead of the ranged ones for better survivability. Stalkers and Shadow Mistresses last a bit longer than their alternatives while the hero blasts your enemy.

i consider assassins better in the final battle because of the poisoning; they tend not to get attacked very early because grim raiders and furies get the most attention the in first rounds so they have ample time to poison a couple of stacks while their numbers are still high while stalkers only get in one attack and that's about it for them because they have to go into the middle of the battlefield to do their damage; while sure, that attack has more damage because of range penalty for the assassin, imo the poison is the assassins/stalkers main strength(in the last battle) and assassins are better at that

Ranged gives a BIG advantage in sieges, no matter what side you're on.
Otherwise, I'd go for Stalkers and Mistresses.

For me the hero's destructive spells act as kind of ranged attack so I go full melee. Besides sooner or later the shooters would be blocked.

I thought Shadow Mistress can shoot too when Eruina uses her special. Can someone clarify it?

I never go ranged, because the other alternatives (Stalker and Shadow Mistress) are sooo much better than the others.
As for Sieges, well the Destructive Magic of the Hero usually does the job (and the Dragons who can fly)

Besides, the ranged troops are not such great in a siege, since they deal 25% damage because of ranged penalty + wall protection

I'd go suerly for the stalkesr and mistresses, since they suit better the warlock tactic: bring them down with destructive magic. Those units can gain a few more casting for the hero, as they are either way not verry damaging.

yes, that would be the theory but i've yet to see a replay where they were used that way. Stalkers usually go invisible in round 2/3, attack a unit and then kick the bucket when they are subsequently attacked by everybody(they tend to attract a lot of anger after their free attack). Matriarchs go invisible a little later as they tend not to be a high priority target but then they turn invisible as soon as they smell danger.
End result? Stalkers die at about the middle of the battle and Matriarchs usually between the Minotaurs and the Hydras
Morale of the story? go ranged for the last battle and leave the "survive as long as you can" stuff to the Hydras as without TA that's the only thing they'll do.

Who cares, spells deal enough 'ranged' damage When it comes to the choice of units - as usual - there is no definite answer, you just pick what suits you. But the melee upgrades are not JUST about damage. Invisibility can buy you time, block enemy ranged stacks or even intercept incoming attackers that would hit another unit - meaning that the opponent may not expect his attack to be interrupted.

true, and if invisibility didn't take one full turn to activate it would work, BUT, who in their right mind wouldn't rush dungeon troops on the battlefield? so as it is it usually won't work
oh, and there isn't such a thing as "enough damage"

Are you kidding? You think you would attack the Stalkers in their starting position when there are offensive units like Furies, Dragons and Riders on the battle field?
