Ok, originally this guide was posted here but Pan suggested to create a new thread so that more people would see it. So here it is:
BB Codes Guide (for HC)
1) Bolding letters:
To bold letters write [b]text you want bolded[/b]. For example, with bb codes taking effect in the previous sentence, it would look like: To bold letters write text you want bolded
2) Italics:
Same as bolded but instead of b you have an i. [i]text you want in italics[/i]. For example, with bb codes taking effect in the previous sentence, it would look like: text you want in italics
3) Underline a text:
Same as bolded but instead of b you have an u. [u]text you want underlined[/u]. For example, with bb codes taking effect in the previous sentence, it would look like: text you want underlined
4) Changing color of the text:
To change the color of the text, you have to use one of the following HC BB Codes:
[red]
[green]
[blue]
It's pretty obvious in which colors they change the text. To return to the normal color, close the color change with a [/font] tag.
Examples (after the arrow is the example with BB codes taking effect)
[red]This text is red[/font] This text is red
[green]This text is green[/font] This text is green
[blue]This text is blue[/font] This text is blue
5) Font strikethrough:
Same as bolded but instead of b you have a del tag. [del]text you want struckthrough[/del]. For example, with bb codes taking effect in the previous sentence, it would look like: text you want struckthrough
6) Changing font:
To change the font of the text, you have to use one of the following HC BB Codes:
[comic]
[courier]
[georgia]
To return to the normal font, close the font change with a [/font] tag.
Examples (after the arrow is the example with BB codes taking effect)
[comic]This text is in the comic font[/font] This text is in the comic font
[courier]This text is in the courier font[/font] This text is in the courier font
[georgia]This text is in the georgia font[/font] This text is in the georgia font
Of all of the above fonts, perhaps the most important is the courier one, because it has a fixed-width.
What does this mean? That each character in the font has the same width. In other fonts (including the default one), letters like "I" have a smaller width than letters like "M".
Here are two examples, one with courier and the other with the default font. See why for yourself why the courier is better in this case:
7) Insert Image:
To insert an image into your post write [img]link of image[/img]. Note that the image has to be uploaded somewhere and use the link provided, not copy-paste the image's path from your computer
As you can see, that smiley picture is uploaded on Photobucket (you can copy-paste its address in your browser's address bar and see that it points to the proud smiley)
Also see this guide on how to upload your pictures.
8) Insert URL:
To insert a link into your post write [url]link[/url] OR [url=LINK]text you want to be click-able[/url] OR [url=LINK][img]image_address[/img][/url]
Note that in the second case, the text you want click-able can't have an apostrophe (') or the link won't work at all!
In the third case the image will be click-able instead of the text.
Examples with the proud smiley link:
[url]http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll221/Asheera_Moonblood/proud.gif[/url]
9) Insert link to a Video in flash format (.swf)
To insert a video into your post write [swf width=WIDTH_OF_VIDEO height=HEIGH_OF_VIDEO]link of video[/swf]. Note that the video has to be uploaded somewhere and use the link provided, not copy-paste the video's path from your computer
Note: from Youtube, you need to use the "embed" link and not the "watch" link!
10) Quote a text:
To quote a piece of text use something like this: [quote]Quoted Text[/quote]. For example, with bb codes taking effect in the previous sentence, it would look like:
Quote:Quoted Text
11) Draw a horizontal bar:
This is a nice trick that looks better than writing something like "___________________"
Write [/quote] to apply the bar.
It will draw a horizontal bar all the way to the end of the line regardless of the resolution of the one that sees it.
Example:(that's the bar)
12) Disable smileys:
To disable smileys write [/smileys] anywhere in your post.
Note that it will disable smileys in the entire post, no matter where you wrote the BB code, and that you CANNOT activate smileys later in that post.
13) How to ignore the bb codes in a text.
This is a special trick. As you can see, in this guide I used it alot to show you how to write with BB codes without these to take effect.
The trick is to write [b][/b] before the code (this means after the opening bracket, and after the slash as well (when "closing" a code))
Example:
For an "opening" BB Code: Open the bracket ('[') then write [b][/b] and then courier and close the bracket (']').
For a "closing" BB Code: Open the bracket ('[') then a slash ('/'), then write [b][/b] and then font and close the bracket (']').

Didn't know is.
Edit> Hey - it's not working?

To elaborate, what you need to do is write like this:
[[b][/b]b]Example text[/[b][/b]b]
Edit > Ok I yield, apparantly there is no way to trick it into displaying that correctly. Ha, yes there was, lol, it only took 15 attempts to figure it out.
This guide is very helpful to those members who prefer to type their posts in notepad (or whatever other program) before they post them.
It also covers just about every question I've been asked about BB Code by members on HCM.
As for the QP, Asheera has been contributing new ideas and participating in just about every forum here at HC - she is certainly deserving of a "token of appreciation" for all of that.

"In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends."
By the way, Asheera. On the left hand side with the box regarding the smileys, there is a little red circle with an x through it. That can disable the smileys in a post.
A question, what closes the [ comic] bb code? I always forget that one.
