New-gen haters?!
Ok... First of all I wasn't sure if this thread doesn't belong to the volcanic wastelands, but decided it fittet here best. I've noticed this disturbing tendency among gamers on youtube comentsnad forum posts. People seem to hate new games! What the f***?! It's all over. They go like "The old "Prince of Persia" series was best - the "Sands of Time" trilogy sucked because the time powers made it too easy and in the new one it's IMPOSSSIBLE TO DIE...", or ""Far Cry 2" sucks for "Far Cry: Insticts" games...", or "Devil May Cry 1 was the best "Devil May Cry" ever..." , or "The "Tomb Raider" series got snowed up eith TR:C and TR:AoD and the new crystal dynamics games are unplayable...". Well first of all the "Far Cry: Instincts" games had the new feral abbilities, but where after all IMO worse than the original "Far Cry" for the PC, because it had a more open environment, but "Far Cry2" OWNS them both completelywith the realisticness of the gameplay experiance and so on... anyway whoever played it knows what I mean, I think. And then the Devil May Cry franchise... hmm... strangely enough the guys who say DMC1 was the best in the series don't seem to have arguments, and also they seem to be trying to tell me that this kicks more ass than this. As for the tomb raider series I must say I like the new gameplay a hole lot better - it's still got all the puzzles, but now all the acrobatics and cool stuff and the grapple etc... personaly I'd love to see Crystal Dynamics remakes of all the games before legend. Plus they made the sotry more intersting than ever and put it all together in underworld. By the way speaking oh underworld I got it yesterday and just finished it today playing on maximum graphics and some wierd glithces did occur but nothing really unpleasent and the game is sooo KICKASS!!! I don't inderstand people's problems with it. About same is for the new (Sands of Time and post) PoPs - I mean does it really have to be HARD first and have awsome graphics, cool things you can do in gameplay and a capturing storyline second to make a cool gaming experiance... So if anyone wants to try to explain me exactly WHY he/she considers the old releases of theese franchises, or any other franchises better than the new or just the oposit post here.

One word: nostalgia
People cling on to the memories of their favourite games... I completely LOVED Red Alert, it was my life!
There's been so many improvement in controls, gameplay etc that I doubt I'd like it nowadays, so I'd rather not reinstall it.
But in my memories, it'll always be a great game.

Well the thing is, that when you play a game for the first time, you like it a lot. When you play the sequel, you expect to make the same leap as before. So the leap between a sequel and an original game should be at least as great as between the original and nothing at all. Which is kinda impossible if you ask me, unless the original game is bad.
That's why people usually like the first game the most, because they played it first. And I do not agree with the fact that this means the first is better at all.
That, or some are simply jealous on the graphics, and the fact that they can't play the newer games with a decent framerate

I'm indifferent to the new gen (PSWii60), mainly because I don't like Nintendo games and console FPSs, and the PS3 has little of interest for me so far. The only game that interests me at all that's come out so far (besides Halo 3, but I want it for the PC) is Soul Calibur 4, but one game isn't enough to make me buy a new console.
Now, when FF XIII (and Versus), KH3, and so on come out, then it's going to be different.

This is exactly what I don't understand. Old games have a lot lower gameplay, at least IMO.
Compare the gameplay of Neverwinter Nights, for example, with an arcade NES game. The difference is simply HUGE.

I'll have to quote on this for truth.
The other problem is the new trend towards casual gaming. People have less time to play games, due to the ever growing consumerist society, ergo games must be easier to play, easier to finish. I would personally have no trouble with this if, once in a while, a good old fashion game would appear. But these things are keeping to themselves less and less - and here where the publisher's fault comes in. Publisher > developer. Publishers sponsor the products, and developers must obey. If the game MUST be politically correct because the publisher wants it to, then so be it. If not, they change the developer.

I would like you all to pay attention for a moment.
All the games you've mentioned are sequels... Bring out something original, Damn it! Fanboys hate sequels of their beloved series for two reasons:
1) You always have to change something without changing the game
2) You can't please fanboys, they're just whiny things who will cry for more even if you do what they want...
And if even the fans aren't happy with their game, how do you expect other to be?
We had a fun, rebel prince archetype in the original by the way. they murdered him
And the same thing with some other series by the way. saw I might be worse than two and three, but the concept was all new, so I loved the first one the most. They can only ruin it from here on.
By the way, we'll have to buy new consoles and spend disgraceful amounts of moeny on this... *sigh*

Or rather those that play the games fake their "coolness" and just brag about their computer specs that are able to run them, without actually paying attention or finding them as enjoyable as they make it look. (so-called mega texture details which most of them don't even notice but still brag about them)
Bragging is so much more common than jealousy.
New games suck because they're focused on graphics. 'Nuff said.

Dude, it depends on who hires who and who's got the greater budget or money. Look at Valve vs Sierra (for Half-life 1 for example)

I'm telling you, if all of you old-game-lovers would have played these new ones first, you would consider the old games crappy.
I'm not saying I didn't play any old games, of course I did, but I'm not blinded by my past experiences.

New Prince of Persia is too easy.
Far Cry 2 could have been named anything. There's no connection between that and the original...Also, the game sucks. There is no old gen in Far Cry btw.
Never played any DMCs...
New Tomb Raiders suck ass because they went over to shooting based gameplay instead of exploring. I heard the new one went back to old ways so it might be good.Quote: By the way speaking oh underworld I got it yesterday and just finished it today.

So you like long games or hard games?
If it's the latter, do you really enjoy Save&Load all the time until you manage to get past a difficult fight?
Although I do agree they don't have to be too easy, but not insanely hard either.

The problem isn't graphics vs. gameplay per se. I mean, compare Quake and Half-Life. Both graphics and gameplay improved. But the problem today is that graphics are expected and expensive. A game without good graphics is laughed at - but a game with good graphics is expensive, so gameplay suffers as a result. Certainly, old NES games didn't have as good of a gameplay, but, say, compare Duke Nukem and Doom 3. Many years passed, but the gameplay didn't advance at all. That's why the Wii is doing so well - not because of its gimmicky controller or "audience strategy", but simply because graphics are less expensive to develop.
But I like sequels when they're done well. As a HoMM fanboy, I liked H4 and H5. As an FF fanboy, I enjoyed FFX (FFXII, though, not as much).
And then there are the things in games that should just be done away with completely:
1. Not being able to save everywhere.
2. Unskippable cutscenes.
3. Clunky interface/animation (I'm looking at you, H5!).
4. Lack of New Game + (for RPGs, FPSs, and some RTS and TBS campaigns).
5. Invisible walls.
6. Infinite spawning of enemies.
7. Escort/protection missions.

I like them hard and long!
That sound so gay!
If it's a game where fights take skill or brains like Megaman, Contra or Serious Sam, for example, yes I do.
But if it's something that just takes luck or walking into an area just from the right place I don't.

In favor of the NES games, obviously. Seriously, you have no right to speak badly of NES games not having played through Contra with a buddy sitting right next to you.
Also, Bignose the Caveman and Bignose Freaks Out.
Neverwinter Nights has a lousy singleplayer story. The online multiplayer stuff makes up for that though.

No, no, no! You got that one wrong - it's simply what usually occures when I get my hands on a new game - I install it on a saturday afternoon and play till I have to go to sleep, than wake up on sunday and finish it. Bad that it usually takes a couple of month before there's a new wworth title out but anyway... I think it was like 12h or 13h gameplay in TR:U for first playthrough WITHOUT LOOKING FOR ALL THE TREASURES/RELICS (which saves a trrible lot of time). And one thing - gameplay in TR was NEVER, EVER shooting-based Well, anyway probobly a part of the problem is in me because it's hard for me to apriciate the gameplay and total gaming experience in a game with very old-looking (not to mention 2d) graphics but still Asheera's theory sounds quite reasonable for me.
