Compensate? Torpor triggers so much that it's even stronger than No Enemy Retaliation. Do not forget that once Torpor triggers, it has a much better effect than No Enemy Retaliation, since the enemy does also not retaliate (and is also put to sleep)
Also, consider the fact that it can trigger on retaliations as well - No Enemy Retaliation is useless in this case.

Creeping: crossbowmen, yes, they deal huge amount of dps.
BUT
Lategame: If you manage to get unicorn hornbow, I would take Marksmen, they do Alllllllllllllllllmooost the same damage, I know the attack got a difference on 1. You get the almost same dmg and when the enemy comes to close they do huge damage.
So what we can conclude is choose what you want depending on your tactics and enemies!

The Unicorn Horn Bow is the only thing which lets you choose some old upgrades over the alternatives (Marksman, Master Hunter)

Exactly and therefor a very importen thing when you plan your tactic.. So I think that the Marksmen and Masterhunters can be just as good as their counterparts with the right artifacts

OK looks like I missed a patch... Princes went from suck to rock, courtesy of Torpor chance being increased by a lot.
Master Hunters aren't better (damage-wise) no matter what archery artifacts, luck, or guilds you have. I thought that was established in a previous topic. The only time they'll be better is if you find Unicorn Bow on the 1st day or something.

Can't really see what you folks are discussing here though... Marksmen don't hold a freakin candle to Crossbowmen therefore they are overpowered. Really simple?

Crossbowers are better in long range and marksman are better at short range. I donīt see THAT much unbalance between these two.
While having below average initiate(8) it usually means when shooters is about to act the enemy is already near them(at least chargers).
Crossbowman: better for creeping and taking down enemy shooters
Marksman: Agaisnt fast chargers and high tier creatures.
Good balance would be if they recude crossbowers damage from 2-8 to 2-6.

Marksmen are not better at short range than Crossbowmen... they're better only in very close range because of Precise Shot, but that happens very rarely compared to shooting at the other side of the battlefield.
And I agree about that damage reduction.

No, one attack point doesn't matter much at all
Lower the damage to 2-6 (and probably leave the attack as it is), and they will be more balanced.
That way Crossbowmen will deal 25% less damage than Marksmen from close range, while dealing 60% more damage from far range. Considering the Marksmen has Precise Shot as well it will be pretty balanced IMO.

This assumes marksmen are perfectly balanced with the rest of the game. What if marksmen are underpowered?
You simply can't prove either point to me. At least not without a lot of math and games to back it up. Replays galore.

Triple damage on retal... they are dead after you used them or get a heavy blow (mass confusion ftw!).

They still have only 8 init so almost every other shooter/caster gets to act before them effectively cutting down the training advantage. So if you think they could use balancing then maybe reducing hp/Def stats would do it
