Poll Question:
The Big Bang: did it happen or not?

I'd like to discuss the current cosmology model(s) and the current state of science in general and physics specifically, but before that I'm doing a poll, asking you this:

Are you convinced that our universe did indeed come to pass as a consequence of "the Big Bang"? Do you believe that there was this beginning of spacetime when there was this giant explosion out of the ultra-dense black hole?
Note, that I'm not interested in a religiously motivated "no" here: if you think GOD created the universe, the question is, did he create it via Big Bang or in a different way.

For the record and as the first voter I do NOT believe in the Big Bang model.

Responses:
Yes. Whether God or no God the universe was created in the process known as Big Bang
I don't know; the model has a lot going for it, but can we really be sure?
Nope. Big Bang is nonsense. It was created differently

I can honestly say that creation of the universe is something I simply can't comprehend. So where did all it start? I have no idea.

To the big bang theory then. It might sound absurd but it is actually pretty rational if you understand anything about it. And it fits pretty well with the expand of the universe, for example. So it's a good theory with pretty solid proof. But that's just what it is, a theory. With what we know it can't be shown true.

So middle option to me.

I voted that it's a BS.

Used to read much about it and the scientific world slowly recants from it, as far as I understand.

I'm not a scientist, but it never made too much sense for me, anyway.

It may have happened, but I don't think it actually "created the world"

There must have been some other event, process or whatever.

Yeah I believe in God but I accept only scientific explanations, and just associate God with them. Kind of rational theist I am

*puts glasses on*

there are a few myths in our society... one of them is that science has all the answers... no self respecting scientist will claim this with a straight face, because there are only a few things that we know -exactly- how and why they happen

whether you are an atheist, like myself, or a theist, you cannot consider yourself a rational creature without admitting that we do not have all the answers yet... to this point, the big bang theory is the one that explains things best... and thats exactly the point... in science we go with what fits -best- with all the data... few times are we lucky enough to have a perfect match

or in other words...

I wonder what makes you think that (the bold print)? What evidence do you have to support that claim?
And about your diagram about science and religion - in fact that's the theory. Practise - sadly - looks QUITE different.

I agree. Big Bang theory doesn't explain best.. it's just the most popular (but also, becoming unpopular quite fast).

The diagram is over generalizing. Stereotypes. Bah.

erhh

I am the only one who thinks this:

God or no god

So the big bang happened, couldn't it just have been god who made that aswell. You know, he created earth so why not the whole univers. ?

I have never understood why religion didn't take it to the next step: GOD CREATED EVERYTHING not just earth.. To narrowminded..

JJ wanted to discuss science guys, not religion

i was talking about the science part of the picture, it just came attatched to the other half

as for why i believe big bang is the one that explains things best so far? ...uh, dunno, do a google

if another theory comes along that does it better? i'll jump in on it

Oh sorry - Well , if I have to believe in either god or bigbang - I would say big bang. Because I am sick of religion.. I think it is filled with loopholes and I can't just believe without proof!

big bang ftw!

To clarify this, it's like Doomforge says:
I don't want a RELIGIOUS discussion, that's why there is no answer the likes of, No, God created everything, simply because one doesn't exclude the other.
So the poll is not after the creator, but more after the way of creation, so-to-speak, which means, it doesn't matter with a view on this poll whether you believe that god DID create things or not. The important question here is HOW.
Did it come to pass VIA big bang or not you might say.

@L-M
So you actually ASSUME only that big bang is the best theory currently, probably because it's the most popular?

As I wrote in my starting post, I'd like to discuss a bit, but before I really plunge into things, I just wanted to make a little survey of opinions here to get an impression about the general opinion here.

I'm in favour of the String Theory.

It makes more sence than Religion imo.

Da big bang? Its the most spammed teori, besides we do not really let that many other terories to the surface of education really so....
Looking over it, its plausable and stuff. But then again we got a really hard time proving big bang because of when it happened Or whatever teori on it.

Well. Afaik, there are a lot of different string theories which all have the disadvantage of not being experimentally falsifiable. Moreover it allows so many stable configurations that actually no definite predictions (or too many of them) would be possible.

However, I'm not sure whether string theory and big bang are connected - I think they both exist separate from each other, if I'm not wrong...

Honestly I once saw a documentairy on NGC which linked the String Theory to the Big Bang (with the BB being the result of a Strng cloash in the Eleventh Dimension)

Well, this all sounds so sci-fi and it doesn't explain why it happens, but at least suggests the correct "how?" part.

While I really don't know for sure, I am always tempted to lean towards the scientific angle rather than the religious angle. Ror the exact reason that picture posted by L-M indicates At least the scientific method is self-cleansing and progressing.

Well I'm not sure about the Big Bang, I'm not really inclined about this so I don't know if it really is plausible or some other theory doubts the Big Bang's existence, but the Big Bang does not contradict God and neither the Bible.

Sure, the man was created 6000 years ago or so, but the Earth is much much older. Those 7 days from the Bible were relative: how do you know the time than passed as fast as now? For all we know, it could have been billions of years instead of 7 days. So the Big Bang, the existence of dinosaurs millions of years ago, etc, do not contradict the existence of a God or the Bible - all those could have happened in those 7 days.

I'm sorry that I included religion in my post but at least I linked it with the Big Bang so I hope it's not that far off-topic.

There was no Big Bang.

We will never get the answer, cause the answer is simple and too complex for our small minds to understand:

ETERNITY

@offtopic

Just last week i got more aware that i flied almost 38 times around a big burning planet in an endless kurve. This flying gives my age.

Just walk outside your house and try to figure out in which direction you are flying!! Its amazing and funny.

Also we are tricked! In the night it looks like we are flying to the stars! But the truth is that we dont....
