HommIII maps and reviews!@
Is there a need for more reviews of maps?@
As some of you might know, I’ve been busy writing some reviews for HOMMIII maps http://www.forumplanet.com/StrategyPlanet/homm/forum.asp?fid=3655
Now I am wondering if people are interested in reading/writing reviews for various maps.
We could discuss those maps in threads and link to the download site.
I think there is still a need/demand for HOMMIII maps and (good) reviews.
If there are more members thinking alike I will go and ask Valeriy to add a new forum where we can add them.
I would also be nice place for the ToH player to help newer member with popular maps.
Let me know what you think ok?

Well ist seems that there is very little demand for this .. since so few people have reacted .. too bad.
And yes Gravdrag I was only talking about map reviews and links too them!
Perhaps I should put this idea back on ice till HOMMIV hits the shelves!@
Here is a review I made recently (so you have an idea what I'm talking about):
Map Name: Devils Eyeland
Map Maker:
Map Type: ROE
Map Difficulty: hard
Map Size:
Postitions: 2HC
Date of review: 15.12.2001
DESCRIPTION: “well …scout, kill and see what happens..who kills the other wins”
That is actually a pretty accurate description the mapmaker gives you.
This is another straightforward battle map. No story..no timed events..no triggered events…nothing besides the opening remark.
I started out with Castle and got good old Adela.
Second town I conquered was a Tower….which can make for a nice combo!
There are mines enough in the surrounding area’s that aren’t to heavily guarded. I took my second Tower im M3W1D5 after clearing the area. Still no sign of my adversary. Up to now the map is quite boring.
No quests, no enemies, weak guards [yawn]. The landscape is nicely done though it ain’t my style. You can see the mapmaker has put some effort it to it.
Take this advise form me…save before entering (for those that ain’t got that healthy habit) that one way monolith or you might get stuck with your main. You will encounter two Ramparts that are behind a ‘moat’. The waterwalk spell you will need is in the underground. I never got around to using those towns or even finish building my other castles (didn’t have to).
Both sides are evenly matched .. which could have made for a nice balanced map if it weren’t for a stupid AI. This map should be played human vs human. The randomness in starting castles should be fixed for it can generate a big unbalance.
The placement of teleporters is good. An extra teleporter close to the home castles would however have added some to the suspense which is missing now..
As for the hard rating ….. a normal rating will do just fine.
I only had to switch autocombat off a few times.
I finished this map on my first try on Impossible on M5W1D6 for a Final Score Of 430 and an Archangel rating.
Mapmaker tips: Fix the unbalance in staring castles Add a story line (no matter how thin). Increase the strength of guards …add some stats to the enemy and you will achieve that hard rating (single player).
Conclusion: Nice map when you’ve got a small hour to kill
Overall rating: 6,5 out of 10 Hexa’s

I thought it was a very well written review, much better than some I have read. (awesome! OR it stinks big time! e.g.) I have found that other people like different sorts of maps than I do, but with a review like that, one could tell even if he disagreed with your overall opinion whether he would like the map or not.
It also seems like it would be helpfull for the mapmaker, as all the criticism was specific and helpfull. I know I have e-mailed several mapmakers to tell them what I thought of their maps, and they have all replied thanking me for being specific.
I think this (reveiwing maps) is a good idea, but if not enough others think so I guess you are right, it wouldn't make sense to keep doing it.
BTW do you review maps made for single play as well?

Here's another review of a XL map I finished...Great map!
Map Name: The Lord Of War
Map Maker:
Map Type: ROE
Map Difficulty: Impossible
Map Size: XL
Positions: 7C, 1H (Stronghold)
Special Loose: loose main
Date of review: 22.12.2001
Description:
This is the story of Leondegrance's war. In ancient times this great warlord was the first one to explore the continents and finally unite them into one great kingdom. Nevertheless he was not a man of peace and honour...but a barbarian in heart and mind.
Your main hero has got his skill slots all filled with some great skills. Some creatures are included too. As from the start, you’ll have three Strongholds which are partly build. The second day event added some creatures and money …. Hmmmm this smells like instant trouble. The third day started with a building event … now this has got the makings of a fine map.
The parts surrounding your are filled with triggered and funny events. By mid month two I had stats in there 20’s and a creature count of (100AB’s, 200 CK’s, 145 TB’s etc) and crossed the brown boarder towards enemies ground. Green provided me with a nice battle. There are lost of ambushes so be prepared.
Money is a real problem at this stage of the map. There simply isn’t enough to buy all those creatures: (
Green is easily squashed. Through timed events there is a feeling of coming trouble. Up to this far I think it’s a great (linear) map. U can clearly see that the mapmaker had fun making this map.
He made some good use of the terrain keeping the map interesting to look at and play with. There are some though battles ahead. Tower especially, is very powerful. When I ran into blue’s main the first time, I had to take a reload. Expect to be ambushed on a regular basis by legions of creatures.
At various timed events, it is stressed to never be satisfied with the strength of your army. Well I can tell U that that msg should be taken serious. After I finished off those Rampart hero’s I ran into Blue’s main again. He was still way to strong for me (in stats and creatures). After a few townportals between Ramparts I found out that blue was trying to follow me by water making his man go on-board off-board continuously … HAHAHHA That provided me with the time to acquire some more creatures.
The Pandora boxes that are scattered around are an absolute must to have .. so don’t forget them. Throughout you are warned for increased resistance (legions of AA’s that await you). Form this point on money and resources will no longer pose a problem (because of the 5 treasuries).
There are some cool area’s to be found on the islands and in the middle of the map .. like a place of “Lost Souls” with dozens of prisons (only one is worthwhile…relics and AB’s). Around month 11 I realized that I had taken the wrong path (order of events). Would I have taken the easier road … the battles would have been far more easy. Several legions of water elementals joined me (of course I upgraded them to Ice Elementals).
The rest of the map isn’t as hard as it’s supposed to be. Sacrifice is a helpful spell here(just take along a legions of 3-4 level creatures to sacrifice for your AB’s for instance). It would have been better if orange had had only one hero. That would prevent him from splitting his army. That battle would have been real hard. In this case I didn’t even take the auto-combat off line
IMPORTANT: make a save game around month 11 and don’t overwrite it. My game crashed/hung up in M13 and neither the AutoSave nor the savegame form M12 fixed the problem. I had to take a reload form 1-2 hours ago …. [sighs]. Perhaps this is because I hadn’t installed that AB patch 2.2 yet?
Conclusion:
The right spells have been blocked form the mageguilds. There is much worthwhile exploring. A very good use of terrain and obstacles make the map great to play/watch. The increasing challenge (with an Uber Hero) is something U like or not. That hero will have stats like 90 90 75 75 in the end. There are legions and legions of creatures to be squashed. There are lots of triggered and timed events and an ongoing story with a fair doses of humor (I at least like the style of humor).
I finished the map on my first try at impossible on M13 W3 D7 for a Final Score of 438 and an Arch Angel rating
