Why do you watch movies?
I remember one time at work I got into a discussion with a co-worker about reasons for watching movies. His view was that they are for entertainment. He goes to have a laugh or see something cool. I tend to be more serious and try to see thought-provoking films. Not always, but most of the time.
I just saw Dr. Strangelove and while it had some laughs it makes some serious points as well.
Well anyway HC how do you lean when it comes to movie-watching? I'm hoping we'll see some insights from Homer seeing how he has 1000 dvd's now.

The only movies I watch are political documentaries and old comedies - and even that, only occasionally.

Movies are a form of art and expression. As such they can satisfy different needs - sometimes I want something light to have fun, others I want something deeper that will trigger emotions or thoughts or challenge me in some way. On the latter my friend enjoys scary movies because they put her in the victim's place, that keeps her suspense about what she would do and if she could survive in such a situation. Of course there is always the OMG GIANT ROBOTS ARE DUKING IT OUT kind of enjoyment
Anyway I personally want to see certain movies be it cult or a good classic one. Some movies simply have something to offer and it's a shame to miss them.

Many reasons. I believe movies are a very good way of art expression. Not necessarily fantasy although that's an obvious example. Also, movies have drama -- art isn't necessarily about making you feel good, but about making you feel. It has everything you need to imagine things. And the music, if done well, can really make that expression even better. There's also the camera and shots which need to be done properly to convey that 'art' or whatever (not sure how to explain but I can discern a bad one from a good one). Better than a short book (if there's such a thing), although books often are much longer so they convey the details better. None is "better" than another in that respect.
This was for art. Movies also have the following:
Rule Of Cool
Rule Of Drama
and rarely Rule Of Funny because I'm not very fond of comedies. Also I'm not very fond of 'classics' and don't praise them like a fanboy.
Movies: good way of 'telling' a story

Hmm, I don't watch many movies, but most of the time I watch them for entertainment (except that I don't like comedies much; sure there are exceptions, but some of them are lame IMO)
By entertainment I mean some or all of the following:
- an interesting story
- some cool action or suspense (the latter in case of a thriller)
- a good background music to enhance the overall atmosphere and feeling
- some epic moments worth remembering

They are inspiring, at times. Even life changing. My mate made a few life-changing decisions after watching a good movie and being influenced by it. He would have never made them without that inspiration, and it turned all good.
And they are a nice way to waste time.
I'm watching dark knight atm, and it's rather cool for a batman movie

I really loved that one. And yes we all have the power to make life altering decisions, it's a matter of timing and inspiration. Often our potential lies dormant waiting for the right door to open
Which were those movies?

One year of your life in exchange for studies you can be proud of sounds a pretty good deal I didn't have a clear preference and only went for economics because of its broad subject, wide range of possible jobs and a nudge from my father.

I'm all into movies... am quite a moviegoer myself. Hollywood, at least. Cause the others aren't distributed well here.
Reasons to watch? Depends. My type is more like you, Phoenix, serious stuffs or thought-provoking ones. If I say my favorites are the likes of The Scent of A Woman, Shawshank Redemption, you'd know what I mean. They're movies about life. And seeing a quality one of those often makes you appreciate life more.
Of course I take adrenaline-pumping kinds or comedies any time of the day. As Doom said, they can kill time effectively
Sometimes it's also nice to check the artistic parts of a movie, the picture, scene-taking (I hate bloopers!), music/soundtrack, etc. Occasionally I make and edit an amateur-version myself, short comedy for my office. Only then I realize how serious editing tasks can be
____________
But now I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it.

Movies are magic and unfortunately the real life aren't neccessary such a beautiful place.
It's somekinda escape portal to another world where you can feel all shorts of emotions.
Same could be said for Music and Games whitout them life would seem even more grey.
Movies are my life elixir, it's not that my own life is boring, it's just that i can appriciate it more after a good movie
It's true that we watch movies to feel better, to the entertainment.
What gives you the kicks is the question to why you watch movies in the first place.
You can be adrenaline junkie and enjoy the fast car chases or Jet Li movies.
You can be sentimental fool who likes romantic comedies to feel happy about yourself.
You can be Sirious and only like old black and white movies and of course Godfather.
You can be casual toilet humor fellah and like movies such as Jack@ss the movie.
You can be sci-fi / fantasy freak and fasinated by Orcs and Aliens and you would like to live in world of Matrix, Lotr or Star Wars.
You can be Mvass and don't like movies at all, unless it's a political and possible historically accurate.
To each of their own they say.. Personally i like all shorts of movies, I just enjoying them differently. If the
movie makes me wonder about the life or comes whit flashbacks after few days then it pretty much served it's meaning.

Father I perfectly agree with the goose bumps, crying and emotional parts. Like I said, art (and entertainment for that matter) is not about making you feel good, it's about making you feel. Most times, I don't even go to a movie to be "funny" at all, I know the movie itself will either be "cool" or dramatic for example, not "funny" (I don't particularly like comedies).
I also hate musicals. I like horror movies -- but beware, my definition of horror is biased. I don't like splatters, for example.
(an example of a "horror" movie would be Jeepers Creepers, it doesn't have much gore and if it has, it's not overused -- the actual feeling of fear is more important, not senseless gore)
