Freedom for Vanadia! [PBM]

Yes - another play-by-mail thread, back by popular demand!

Let's make it more interesting this time: how about an offline tournament?

Salamandre has suggested a GREAT map called Vanadia's Freedom by Stéphane Smirnow. It's huge, it's rich, it's gorgeous! So here's the main idea: you sign up in this thread, choose the starting town, hero and bonus, and we all play AGAINST each other. However, we cannot fight each other - the winner is the player who defeats the stack of Darkness Dragons! We can steal each other's mines and dwellings, but not attack heroes and towns. We cannot leave guards in mines or garrisons and cannot block the way for more than one turn. Besides, you can always load if you screw up something.

How does that sound?

Wait, it gets better - Gelu and all other campaign heroes are enabled. Necro too. Yeah, I know it's IMBA, but it'll be fun.

Here's hoping all those lurkers will join this time. There are eight slots and we'll need at least three players. I do not expect role playing this time, but a short summary of your turn is welcome. Those who sign up will agree on the difficulty.

So... Are you Vanadia's savior?

I already played this awesome map and sure I want to try it again
I'm just worried about my WoG version. Is it possible to play one turn and see if it works ?

I also suggest you to include some WoG options like stack experience or hero specialization boost, would be even more fun

If all of this is possible, I take the Tower

This map was scripted by a master. Any custom added script can destroy it and your playing experience as well.

I'm in I like all towns so there is no problem to choose a town. I suppose we cannot steal from human players using the scouting skill either? It's imbalanced I think.

Fine, let's play without changing anything, you are right.

I will send a save from the game later to let one of you test it and see if it works.

Hehe, here one turn can be done quickly (it will be the rest from playing with 15 heroes in Alexander ).

I'ts good in this map that skills like eagle eye, scouting, first aid (maybe too strong this one) have their place too. Towns that have a good start are Rampart and Fortress. Tower is easy too, Dungeon has the portal of summonning to hire Darkness dragons! . Many commander artifacts so commanders will play a big role...

For difficulty I propose 200% as it's already very easy that way, many chests lying around .

This sounds interesting. I got into WoG more and more, but only those random maps on self made templates and a few custom maps sent by Salamandre. I have close to zero experience with all this ERM stuff.

Is this map filled with surprises like "Your 18 Ancients went into a Sauna and became 18 peasants that way", or "1 of the rogues which joined your army due to your scouting skill was a real thief. He stole all your gold and resources. Here is your welfare request!"?

Well if you want challenge the best way is to play Salamandre maps (any of them) . Here there are many imbalances but they can cancel each other in the end so it still stays an entertaining map, specially when played like here. The only thing that can lead to a reload in singleplayer is the ambushes events. Nothing let's guess that there will be a tough fight 1 square ahead. I helped playtest the map so I can say that all factions are fun to play, with their own challenges. Still you must have good battle skills to win some fights or simply expand quickly with your strategical decisions. The path for the second town must be cleared asap and casualties are acceptable here, same for capturing lv8 dwellings. It's clear that there will be surprises in this map . I hope you will play Angelito, it will be fun

@ Paulemille

Here, try this save. Download the map from the first post and copy both files in your Maps folder. Go to Multiplayer > Hot Seat > type 2 names (anything) and try to load my save. If it works, please upload your save for me.

@ Salamandre, could you please do the same so that we check if it works with the dat file? If not, we'll have to make some modifications...

@ Pacifist, yeah you're right - I guess we shouldn't use Scouting that way...

@ Angelito: Haha , no, there's no funny stuff in this map. It plays like a SoD map with some WoG features.

It works on my system. But you guys should not start if Paulemile has another version. Dat files really does not like that. I use one for my TEW III map and all people with game modifications got weird things later in game.

It is so hard for him to use a clean version in a different folder?

Also dat files must be played ONLY with WoG options set to default and saved. Ask Pacifist what happens if not...

Here's the save. It works fine with me.

@Salamandre

I have a clean SoD version, but a WoG version with the Acid Dragon's patch (which I can't remove for some reason). On my game it only changes skins of creatures and buildings, but let the stats the same as the good old version (so I fight super efreets with 15hp ).
I tried to install WoG again on my clean SoD version but doesn't work on vista for me, and I can't find another comp without vista to install WoG and then copy-paste on mine.
If the players are afraid of what Salamandre said (actually you are maybe right). Just don't count me as a player

It loads, but have you checked the whole map to see all is right? Do the skills work as intented? Have the creatures same stats as Vlad's ones? Are the custom objects functioning?

What are your changes in your version?

Thanks for checking it out.

Paulemile, please listen to Salamandre and install a clean version of WoG... You can always go back to other patches in the future. Let us know what you've decided, and in the meantime I'll keep Tower reserved for you.

Angelito and Pacifist, feel free to choose your starting options. You might want to let me be Red though, so that I can host the game and wogify the map.
