Layout contest

Hi there, Salamandre and his topic "the power of mapmaking" made me think about a layout contest, as I already said.

Maybe it's time to start it soon
With further reflexion, I realized that perhaps a contest wouldn't be needed. People could just post their creations here and discuss them.
However, if members want competition, we can add some rules.

Things I would love to see :

-several themes on maps. I mean small areas with their own history, where something happened (If you put a corpse, explain why there is a skeleton here, what is the use of this glowing object built on the top of that moutain... etc).
-many objects used to avoid repetitions and create an unique diversity (I tried to install the new objects Salamandre uploaded in the related topic, but it seems that my H3wupd.exe doesn't work anymore if someone knows how to fix it...).

Well, everyone is welcome to add rules or various ideas, everyone can choose his deadline himself... all editor patches allowed
I will start my own layout soon, I would like to fill an entire small map. We'll see

If your update.exe does not work, then it may be two reasons: either your lod files are corrupted, so need reinstall, or you forgot to change regional settings to english before running update.

As for this topic, I am afraid you will not have much of entries. Mapmaking is a long process, more complex than making a 2 minutes creature, mainly because you start with nothing but your ideas.

My regional settings are in english, so I need to reinstall WoG... something I already tried which doesn't work either.

You are right about the topic. I wish I had at least a few contestants, or even some posts to add rules, themes...

Whatever, I didn't put many efforts on this. I will post my layouts as long as I still want to make some. This is not the first time my ideas get no answers I will survive

No time (and no game at the moment ) for the contest, but here's a screenshot of my map featuring some Halfling characters. This picture is all that's left from the scenario, because the patch screwed up my editor. LOL

Very nice area, although some objects have a wrong perspective.
The Homm2 trees fit very well on a Homm3 map however, I like it

I Always liked making just Scenic maps.
unplayable but i hope scenic.



Yeah, i think i have some of the 300 objects on there... haven't uninstalled "300". but why should i?

The new editor patch is in a different folder than the 300 custom install. Removing 300 graphics will not affect the 400 new objects, they will stay in your editor. There is no way to remove them, other than deleting WoG.

this terrain comes with extra object patch (don't know which version, i installed it with scenario '300') there are extra terrain tiles added to rocktl.def. (the subtype for terrain tile is number of image in the terrain def file)

This is where I don't get it. Your ERM help is different. If the patch (which I have ) installs new rock defs., why your ERM got updated?

Here's my attempt...
Much harder than I thought, to be frank
It's now a mess rather than something else


Let me explain it a bit though :

Rumors of ancient civilization and related treasures made these three explorers leave their home and travel to this land. Coming from west, after walking for days through giant plants, they settled a camp for the night. They finally manage to find the lost place... The old guard outpost is right ahead them, now rust and almost destroyed.

The remains of a road leading to the village are covered with rocks and are now a dead end. But the explorers can see many buildings and other objects surronded by mountains behind...

They can also contiune their route south, to reach the village's forest, where we could find the rarest herbs and shrubs decades ago. Today, the swamp has come and turned this beautiful forest into a dangerous jungle... Many terrible creatures live here now, but there is still plenty of resources to gather.
