the greatest sin
what is the worst thing that anyone can do, in your oppinion? what, to you, screams of wrong so loudly that you want to hit the guy or group that did it? what do you think can't be forgiven.
to me, it's ignorance. Ignorance is an ugly monster, sitting in our hearts, keeping us reading the same-old, same old as everything else is wrong and only idiots and evil people believe it. Ignorance is mother of all sins, as it is what started the crusades, the witch trials, the holocausts, the massacres and the destruction. I hate ignorance as it is found in all our hearts and is a monster when we listen to it.

In my humble opinion, it's a combination that can be generalized to controlling others. We'd always be at the mercy of our own free will, not the will of others, and the same goes for the possible things we can do, and getting what we want.
So forced (unecessary) dependency I guess.
But it includes so much, true it does not include ignorance (unless the ignorant wishes to control others), it does not include hate (unless the hating one expresses his hate through force), but it does include murder, and many other things, that never should be acceptable.

Apart from greed/avarice, lust is one of the "root" sins where others grow from, including murder and hate.

I've not much time to reflect on it, but I think cruelty to others comes close as the most evil of sins. Whether physical or psychological in nature, the human capacity to harm other people and creatures can be more damaging than is immediately apparent. Ignorance has enough potential to bring on seriously negative consequences, there's no doubt about that. But if ignorance only leaves certain people in the dark and doesn't cause them to hurt others, it's not as big a deal. It's just a personal problem they need to sort out for themselves. One thing that's messed up about human nature is how in some cases, ignorance can't be blamed for a lot of gruesome behavior. There are people out there who willfully inflict pain and hardship on those around them, even when they should know better.

Cruelty to others has many roots, which depends on the person. (psychos may have no reason, but that's why they're psychos, they can't even think straight)
Ignorance is caused by pride, so "pride" is the sin you're looking for.
Cruelty to others can be caused by envy, pride, lust or avarice.

I think it may fit "sloth", though it depends on the definition. It depends because I think that sin is more akin to "spitting in God's name", notice that it's NOT "disbelief in God"!

On cruelty and harm
A psycho is bad news in general, but I think it's far more egregious when the people doing the damage aren't psychotic and are capable of thinking for themselves. Of course, even so, this can go deeper with a lot of behavioral factors, which can get really messy.

It's more likely hypocrisy.
My opinion: perhaps envy.

Exactly, that's the real sin because of the intentional motivation. There are examples from different "root sins":
- avarice/greed: someone using force or slavery for labor or resources (or other stuff like this)
- pride: someone who is cruel to others to inspire "fear" and show them how "powerful" he is
- lust: same as greed except that instead of "material" things he seeks "pleasure" (well the line sometimes is thin between them)
- envy: obvious one. someone who is cruel to others because they are more successful than him/her (you know what "successful" can take many definitions, but I hope everyone knows what 'envy' is )

By the way of all the 4 above in the "cruelty to others" scenario, avarice is the most rational choice for a bad person (because it makes them more powerful/resourceful).
EDIT: psychos, or at least those who are intentional, usually have "lust" since they seek pleasure from torturing/being cruel to others, which is probably the least rational of them all. (but damn dangerous sin)

Cruelty. Deliberate cruelty.
You say ignorance, envy, catholicism But seriously, imagine something like a dude raping someone you love in front of your very eyes when you are completely helpless. And all those feats suddenly become acceptable.
The most horrifying thing is, yeah, extreme cases of sadism.

Lust
though most rapes are actually about feeling powerful (not pleasure), that's why I used that as an example.

Depends on the feeling, most times the pleasure is simply the fact that you consider yourself very "great", which is pride. It's hard to 'quantify' them of course, it isn't exactly science...
EDIT: the reason I put "lust" as the most "deadly" (or "greatest") is because it usually sinks too deep into someone, making it extremely hard for that someone to even feel wrong at all. Avarice, while it is rational and makes bad people more powerful, is one of the easiest to feel remorse and/or change. Well don't mind it just my philosophical rambling...
