No, it's time to upgrade his graphics card. Most computers these days should be able to handle Aero without any problems. I'd get the graphics card just so I won't have any problems like that (I'd disable Aero too) but yeah, better to just upgrade.
On another note, welcome back DS. Where have you been?!

I've gotten Windows 7 and apart from being a lot shinier and a lot more like a mac I wonder where my Solitaire is.
Oh and I've noticed that Tribes of the East is running somewhat slower does anyone have an idea about that?

I like win7 so far. It works faster than XP for me and seems more stable, and since I managed to get the sound to work, I encountered no other issues. Not sure how it works for gaming because I'm playing only dragon age now, which I haven't tried on XP... but it works well, no lag, no rubber banding, so I can't complain.

How much does it say in Task Manager after it boots (after the HD activity stops), in memory usage?
Also, how long does it take to boot?

It takes about as much time to boot as XP does on my PC
And right now it displays 850 MB memory usage, it's like 20 mins after boot (I used firefox only).

850 MB Jesus!
Can you try without Firefox, or does it run automatically?

Ok, I did the upgrade from Vista-64 to 7-64 on my Notebook, and everything is fine so far. Tribes is running in 1920x1080 mode on everything it has in Graphics, and it looks good so far.

That's pretty poor. Right now I have Winamp going, multiple folders open, Firefox with about 10 or so tabs open, MSN open, Skype open, Last.fm open and a game thing open and all I'm using is about 850 MB of memory and this is on XP.

Thing is I have some stuff in autostart (daemon, msn, etc). So it's possibly lower. Firefox adds 50-100 MB as far as I see.

Do not forget that Vista got effective caching into the ram.... Well the setting for the caching is just..... a big failure..... its the opposite of effective last time i checked.

Caching SHOULD NOT be USED MEMORY. XP has disk caches too but they aren't displayed as "used" memory because that memory is not USED, it's free to use by other apps -- of course if that memory is still 'free' then Windows XP uses it to cache disk access, but at any time any app can use that page block (memory is divided into 'pages').
So what's the deal with Vista/7's cache being USED memory (i.e memory that is not 'free' for apps to use), it's totally backwards.
My Windows XP uses 150MB after bootup, with all drivers and everything.

Just another status report.
Until now everything I installed on my notebook with a Windows 7 64bit OS runs without a hitch. This is astonishingly true for Disciples II Gold as well which I could run on XP only in 98/Me compatibility mode and on Vista (64bit) not at all, but on Windows 7 it runs right from installing.
Moreover the system is (still) booting very fast. All in all Win 7 looks like a real winner

My win 7 has been working well. I only had one problem which is that my xp machine can't see my win 7 machine on the network (it works the other way).
What do I care if 850mb are being used when I have a total of 4gb? I never go past 1.5gb usage so far that I noticed.
I read some technical gibberish about available shown and used may not be accurate blah blah. Basically, bash it if it is a real-world problem, otherwise...
