Thanks, that's exactly what I needed.  Any idea how long this process takes start to finish?  I'd like to know if I can finish it in an evening or if I should wait until the weekend.

Other question: just out of curiosity, since I won't be formatting my old hard drive, am I able to just put the old hard drive back in and run basically my old system any time I want?
As long as it's on the same hardware (i.e you don't change other devices), then yes it should definitely work. The reason different hardware might not is because of drivers installed for a different hardware -- thus you would need to install different drivers.

Windows 7 seems to lack some libraries. I need mss32.dll to play WoG, so I downloaded it and placed it in the appropriate, but I constantly get this message when I try to launch the game:

'The procedure entry point _AIL_set_sample_volume@8 could not be located in the dyanamic link library mss32.dll'

Does anyone knows what needs to be done?

You may have downloaded a version that doesn't have that procedure. Try to copy it from your older installation, if you still have it that is.

BTW don't mix 32-bit with 64-bit dlls or vice-versa!

Oh not the mss32.dll <.< Check if one of your games already got 1 working version, and use that.

TheDeath, I don't even understand why you dislike Linux and criticise it in such ways when you've never tried it.  I'll say it one more time for you: Try something before criticising it, otherwise you just look like a fool.

But has he tried it? No. That's my point. I wasn't meant to be aggressive in my post either, I just want TheDeath to understand that if he talks about something, that he has at least tried it out first to make sure that what he is saying is valid, because a lot of mistakes can be made if he's talking about something he has hardly any knowledge about.

Maybe in your eyes and I don't really care. This wasn't even about Linux, and I only replied to what del_diablo said about Linux, not to stuff which "I have no idea about". I asked a simple question: how much memory does W7 use after booting up. And I gave possible reasons why 'caching' is not a reason -- or if it is, then the task manager/whatever in W7 terribly sucks, that's a simple conclusion based on a condition -- there's nothing that "trying out" would tell more -- the only thing that would inform more would be looking through the MSDN (developer) documentation to see the internal workings of it so I can just clarify the condition (if statement) I made, but either way, one of the outcomes based on that condition is true. Which means either one of these:

1) W7 uses a lot of RAM, so it sucks
2) A lot of RAM used is cache, but caching is reported "non-free memory", so the task manager utterly sucks.

Now if I knew more internal workings I could discover which one of the above is true.

Lol. Well a lot of people I know, including my sister, say that W7 is good and seems to run fast. RAM doesn't seem to be a problem at all. It's what vista should have been. Have you had any first hand experience with it yet?

No. And saying that "it runs fast" is not objective at all, and not even the subject I'm talking about. The point is in comparison with XP, obviously, not with Vista -- I never said Vista is better than 7; 7 is much better than Vista optimization-wise, but still too bloated for my tastes (which are a 80MB RAM XP without drivers )

Umm, I was making a point that it is fast, not going on any subject you're going on about. I also made another point that W7 is better than Vista. Just two points I made in general, not about anything specific you said. lol

The part about RAM not being a problem was about the first thing you said (first assumption or whatever) that W7 uses a lot of RAM.

Also going to sleep now so I'll reply much later (maybe, if I can be bothered to reply) lol.

In that case I agree about comparison with Vista.

Yes it does, by my standards, because 800MB of 'non-free' memory usage without any apps running (except the operating system) is bad when that memory should be left to apps you really need.

Of course it's bad. Mind you, newer laptops these days have much more RAM in them so it won't exactly be a problem no matter how much RAM the OS needs to run (which won't be that much).

Okay sleep now!

We've had Windows 7 at work (IT-support) since spring/summer and it definately works faster and better than Vista. First I wondered why some old programs, such as old version of Dreamweaver, crashes all the time. The problem was with Program Files security that prevented saving a file straight to that folder. But usually programs work without problems.

So those who still have XP, jump straight to 7 and forget Vista. You probably hear this a lot... because it's true
