What rule changes would you make in football (soccer)?
Sepp Blatter was recently talking about removing the offside rule. I know from experience in summer pickup games that this is a horrible idea. I would much prefer video technology to be consulted in case of dispute.
This, rule changes, is a very wide topic, which could include things like if a red card should be given on a penalty kick foul or how big the goal should be.
Just thought I'd get the ball rolling and hopefully others will find it an interesting subject.

I used to play soccer but don't like it anymore, I follow AFL, which happens to have no offside rule. I see this as a good thing because it means that players can get more experience in more positions and perhaps they might actually be better in a position which they don't usually play in.

- tape fingers of players together who pull other players on their shirts
- asskicks for people who simulate a foul.
but seriously : i would change nothing, because i like soccer the way it is, including wrong decisions now and then.

This too. But the games would have to be shortened by a lot then. To one hour maybe.

I'd replace the ball with an anvil, then at least there'd be a reason why the players are earning all those billions

By real time do you mean never stopping the clock? I don't quite understand.

Real time = time runs when game is going, time stops when ball is out of bounds or referee stopped the game (free kick etc...)
Please don't compare those terms to computer games, because you hardly can play any kind of modern team sport "turn based".

The ref already stops the clock for injuries which leads to complaints about injury time being too short or too long depending on whether you are on the benefiting side or not.
It would be nice if the ref's watch was hooked up to the clock in the stadium and when he hit 45 and then 90 that was it. Very precise.

The IFAB (international rules committee) just ruled out using video technology on the goal line. Everyone else knows it is a good idea. They do it in tennis right?

Nope. One the same turn, both teams are able to act, so it is not turn based.
Turn based would be billard, snooker, chess, etc..., but those are 1 on 1, not team.
And the referee doesn't stop the clock when game is interrupted. He just values the extra time by all things he still has in mind which took a long time. Player changes for example, injuries etc...
But compare those 2-4 minutes extra time to the effective time soccer is "in action": The normal game lasts around 60 minutes real time. So you can see you have 30 minutes (50%!!) "wasted".

Taking a throw in or a free kick is part of the action. I don't see how you arrived at 60 mins.

@ Angelito
real time and turn based references in video game VS sports are not exactly the main foci here but NO YOU DO NOT TELL ME WHAT TO DO lol jk this time
i didnt know that it was common reference in sports, real time....... Like command and conquer.... Maybe sonic the hedgehog and mario brothers are real time also. I am pretty sure there are a lot of RT games where you can pause too so similar to referee pausing the football games maybe?
(there is a secret hotdog in the above statement)

Taking a throw in is a part of the action in basketball or handball too, but why is the clock stopped in those sports until the ball is on the field again?
And the 60 minutes are not my idea, but were often measured. Especially in worldcups you see the "effective playtime" in the statistics afterwards.
