I'd remove the rules I find absurd, such as yellow cards for taking your shirt off and stuff like that.
Also I'd not allow romanians to watch or participate in it, just to be nice to zamfir!

That is a silly rule. And it is silly that players do it knowing they will get a card.

PR, more referees is sometimes a good thing. If one referee doesn't see something, the other one might.

How is chess a sport? Sports involve heavy physical activity - running around, etc. Chess does not.

I don't disagree William I'm just looking for specifics. Like should they stand behind the goal? Or is each of the four linesman responsible for one quadrant of the sidelines?

@ Mvass
Not all sports require heavy physical activity.
I guess Hunting (which many consider a sport) is not a sport? That doesn't really require 'heavy' physical activity, just walking around and shooting stuff. What about Fishing? That just requires you to be able to reel a fish in and you don't have to be strong to do that and most of the time you're sitting down doing it. Heavy physical activity? I think not.
You can look here for peoples opinions (of which I took some in my post lol ).
Also, Chess is considered a sport and I recommend you read here.
@ PR
They should have maybe one standing behind the goal, to get a closer look at things happening near the goal, and also if a goal is a goal or isn't (there have been some cases I have seen where a goal hasn't been given yet it went in) and maybe two or three field umpires (two I guess, three would be over doing it).

Both hunting and fishing involve much heavier physical activity than chess does. And Wikipedia is wrong.

Why is it wrong? Was the other link wrong as well which had various people from across the world giving their opinions on it?
Saw a quote from a website that said:
Quote: When we look at the beginning of chess as a sport we have to realize that chess can be defined as a sport because it is a competitive activity.
I guess this is wrong too, in your opinion, right?
I think the only person here that is wrong is you given that sports really isn't your forte and I feel that you're only arguing for the sake of it.
But please, this thread isn't about that and I don't want to turn into you or thedeath and derail topics about meaningless **** so I will stop now and hope you will too. Let's get back with the topic about soccer shall we?

Not all competitive activities are sports. HoMM can be competitive, but there's no way it's a sport.

I have to agree with Mvass here. Actually I don't even qualify Hunting as a sport. Now, if they were hunting Grizzlies with nothing but a Army Knife? That..that would be a sport. Shooting something rather defensless (at that range) from a distance? Yeah..not a sport.
Even fishing is not really a sport to me..unless you are wading in to water fishing for Pirana. Then again never understood some of the other so called sports either. Like bobsledding.

@PR
You could observe the experiment with 5 referees in matches of Europe League. Two new referees stand near the goals. Their main objectives are:
1)Looking for fouls in penalty area.
2)Observing if ball intercepted the line of goals.
3)Helping with off-sides.

What is a sport depends a lot in what context. Is it what you define as a sport, or is it what is generally assumed to be a sport?
What you define as a sport is completely subjective and of course you can just write you disagree. What is generally assumed to be a sport, is still subjective, however it has a measure of objectivity at least.
Now in this matter, Angelito wrote:
Quote: Real time like it is in EVERY other better known team sport!
Which gives me the impression he's not talking about sport as each of us may understand it, but as how it's generally understood, otherwise such a statement in the first place would make no sense.
Since chess is general understood as a sport, it is in this case a sport.
However if chess is generally considered a team sport, I don't know. I would guess yes, because I know usually teams compete, however it is completely on a 1vs1 basis of course.
Also, it might be a trick postulate, as he writes every other better known sport. In europe especially, soccer might be the best known sport of all, which makes the postulate really saying nothing.
Anyway, just to make an example of a well known team sport, handball, where there is not always real time. That is, the clock does not stop in every free throw etc. often you see how the time runs out while the team looses time on taking a free throw, lining up, etc.

The ball is still on the field here, can be played on immediately by the player and that is what I meant.
Ball out of bounce --> time stops.
Injury of a player --> time stops.
Penalty applied --> time stops.
Goal scored --> time stops. (Not used in handball and Basketball due to the smaller field I guess, but hockey and football players don't celebrate that often in a game, therfore you have that break)
etc...
A freekick or freethrow is part of the action where there isn't always a whistle from the referee needed to get started again, in opposit to a penalty for example.
With "well known" I meant team sports which are played all over the world and are known in most of the modern countries. I am sure, in mongolia they have some kind of polo, which is not known all over the world. Same goes with Boccia (Italy in France mostly), which is kinda similar to Curling.

There is physical sport, and there is brain sport. that's why we should not only exercise in body related sport to keep the body in good shape, but also in brain sport to keep your brain in a good shape too..
Snooker is sport too, but not very physical.
