Quote: I loved the concept of Fortress but felt that the town needed some serious power upgrade, especially in the lower ranks. A crappy level 2 ranger, unimpressive level 1 were not my idea of a good beginning. Sure you could get Wyverns on the 3rd day but that edge is lost as the game progresses. Dragonflies were my favorite but they couldn't win the battle on their own, especially since range support was so little.
If they bring the Fortress in an expansion, I'd like the town to be jaw droppingly awesome. Something wicked specialty like tropical fever or something. :-P
Fortress creatures weren't always the strongest, but I feel that it's often underestimated as a town. It's dirt-cheap and sturdy if nothing else.
Keep up those write-ins! And make sure you specify H3 Fortress, since those dwarves share the same name.
@Xerox and that's what made them so cool
Fortress(H3) HAS to come back. It was so unique and along with the music, town appearance, swamp theme, and of course the units, the experience of playing it was unforgettable.
As I mentioned before - so what the stats of the creatures were bad in some cases, this can easily be changed in H6 (it's only numbers ) the creature DESIGN and IDEA were and are the most important

Apparently, I'm in the minority... But I could do without the Fortress. The only time I played them in III was during the campaigns (and I can only remember playing Adrienne's). I'd take my Sylvan/Rampart/Sorceress as my nature-associated faction over them.

It's definitely not everyone's favorite, but I feel that it resonated with a fair amount of people. I found it to be far more original in nature and interesting in art style than many of the other factions; the fact that it is the only town to fail to make an appearance in any capacity since H3 (Conflux at least got most of its units into the game in some form, even if they do look a little weird) is rather disappointing.

It wasn't as much Conflux getting its units into the next installments as it was the elementals reappearing on their own. Conflux was a poorly executed decision and that was one town I was always reluctant to play with. I never really got a feel for the units, that idea you get about the relative strength of your stacks vs. the enemy's. Some units were incredibly powerful and others didn't amount to much at all despite costing more.
Exception: Magic elementals. Their defense animation made them awesome. ;-)
When playing H3, I usually picked some other town instead of Fortress because of the weak lower tiers. The campaign where you play the barbarian, then fortress and then have to pick one side to battle against the other, I went for the barbarian. Their troop lineup seemed far more impressive (especially at the point where 180 something behemoths decided to join me for no reason! :-D )

Fortress is definitely a town whose strengths might not be obvious at first; when I first started playing some 8-9 years ago, my friends and I all dismissed it as the "crappy town" and we would always set the AIs to it so we were sure to beat them.
It didn't start to grow on me for quite a while, but I definitely think it has quite a few strengths if you go below the surface to look for them. Plus, Mighty Gorgons are awesome.
And I actually liked Conflux; I really enjoyed the art style and peaceful theme. I do agree that the elementals were poorly executed, though; T2 and T3 were far too strong while T4 and T5 were sub-par. Overall, I found it to be a very aesthetically pleasing town, though; to be fair, I love the art style of pretty much every town in 3.

You are all starting to talk about how WEAK the low levels of Fortress were, its only STATS and can be CHANGED, their design is great.
As for the Conflux, I really loved it because it allowed me to recruit some of my favourite units (elementals) the Sprites were a nice Level.1 and the Phoenix was also great to have in an army (not some crappy H5 neutral that you cannot recruit and see one once in a million years on a map ;/ ) The castle theme and music were great IMO. Lastly, I liked how the Elementals had upgrades. (the town was imbalanced a bit STAT-WISE, BUT it could easily be changed, while leaving the good lineup alone )

I agree that the Conflux was a really cool town. I personally think that the best creature was the Magic Element. I don't want the whole town to come back but I'll love to see the Magic Element as a neutral.

Conflux looked awesome, no doubts about it. But looks don't win battles and the screwed up troops quickly ruined the experience for me.
The same goes for Fortress. The troops really looked like denizens of the swamps and jungles. But they needed way too much spell support, especially haste. The town could shine, definitely, but others would shine more easily which is what discouraged me from playing them. And the fact that any town without good rangers loses quite a few points in my eyes.

I shall stand by my argument yet again: Yes their STATS left much to be desired, but they can be CHANGED and MODIFIED for H6, while it's the DESIGN and APPEARANCE/INDIVIDUALITY of the units (both Conflux and H3 Fortress)

If lizard Fortress returns then I would absolutely hate if it was a nearly identical copy of the H3 Fortress. Though they should keep the architecture.

Fortress & Conflux were my two LEAST favorite towns in Homm3. I get why people like the Fortress, but I don't understand the love affair with it. I'd be fine with it if it never came back.

I'd be fine with it, but I'm not exactly an unbiased opinion.
To Mike80D: I love Fortress because the art style of the town and its creatures, and the musical themes, resonated with me more so than any of the other towns. It's a very personal thing, and obviously will be different for everyone, but I at least love Fortress and still talk about it because I want to see it put back in the series. Imagine how you would feel if your favorite town hadn't appeared in a Heroes game for 13 years; pretty disappointing, right?

That would be funny to see.
This reminds me, I hope some creatures have a shapeshifting ability (similar to the fate spinner). Perhaps an enormous Lizard that can sustain a ton of damage, that then shifts into a Lizard-Man who can shoot. I like the concept of shapeshifting.

I could do without fortress, the III or V version. Neither of them truly spoke to me (though I did like having some northern style mythology in V, even though it was very plain).
I liked the mighty gorgons of course, but as a whole, Fortress lacked offensive power. Ranged troops and spells could wipe em out before any troop besides the awesome dragon flies could come close. Plus, the swamp thing wasn't bad, but I liked the cool Dungeon and the beautiful Rampart more.
Oh and:
Quote:
Quote: The gorgons looked like bulls mixed with some kind of scaly reptilian.
Gorgons are taken directly from D&D, they don't have anything to do with reptilians or/and swamps.
and
They even have the same ability (deathbreath)
Actually, they both come from Greek Mythology, DnD just took it from there.

Let me get this mess straight with some info.. Like some kind of family tree or family order of who came first.
I might not be right about all though I checked the web for sure facts regarding dates. I should have done a more in-depth family tree about who have borrowed from who but I dont bother right now. Though Im pretty sure about the first four franchises/series.
Ancient myths, legends. Gives birth to:
1: Tolkiens works (the first Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics 1936)
2: Dungeon & Dragons (1974)
3: Warhammer (1983)
4: Might & Magic (1986)
5: Kings Bounty (1990)
"related to M&M"
6: Warcraft (1994)
7: Heroes of Might and Magic (1995)
"related to M&M, Kings Bounty"
8: Disciples (1999)
9: World of Warcraft (2004)
"related to Warcraft"
The oldest franchise/works/series being inspired by ancient myths and legends, being Tolkien. The youngest as far as I bother to list are in fact Disciples.

The oldest being Tolkien? Lord Dunsany, Robert E. Howard and George MacDonald may disagree with you on this.
And these three are just off the top of my head. I could come with many more with a tiny little bit of research.

Does it matter? I bet that Tolkien knew them and read their books, anyway. If you know what that means.
