Kodial you must have hated Age of Mythology. I mean there you could have giants, Valkyries, Fenrirs and troll all in the same team. What do you say about that?
And like Nightterror says, this isn't heroes of mythology, if you say giants, troll and Valkyries live in happy harmony then they. They can all be in the same faction.
It is all in the hands of the developers...

Oh man. I'm glad I didn't play it.
Anyway, probably Adrius is right about me. I do let my knowledge of mythology and history, traditions and all that, narrow down my imagination.
Well, that's just me. I did it now and probably gonna do it again in the future too. There's no helping it, so take it easy. 
Anyway, here's the thing. Wether you choose to respect the sources you draw your inspiration for your factions, is completely optional.I still think it's best to respect it, but that's just me. However what is not optional, is coming up with a coherent storyline to explain how your units banded up together. It should be of equal importance to explain why are they together as much as you do with showing us who are they. You can even change their nature from good to evil, should you choose to, if you come up with a good story behind it.
Otherwise it's all just random creatures. I could probably come with many different factions all dwarven too, race based or ideological within minutes and you could not fault me because I would say "in my faction, they're friends".
But that's just not good enough, you know?
A good story though that connects the units together, will at least make people like me shut up!
Besides, I think we can all agree that it's more creative and more challenging to come up with the lore of our own factions, than it is to just put seven different vaguely similar monsters.

You are making it bigger then what it is...
Trolls and giants isn't only featuring in norse mythology, In Scandinavian folklore for example(where they are much cooler) they isn't necessarily evil.(or maybe the giants are, but they can be huge human anyway...)
I would love a faction in heroes that is inspired by Norse mythology/ Scandinavian folklore. 
By the way dwarfs was cool in mythology simply for the fact that they were a minor people that didn't exist in abundance. That what I want with them, to just have a small role as a lesser race in a greater faction.

No, they're not necesserily evil, but they're not friendly with Ysgaard's denizens such as Valkyries and Einherjar's, since Thor at least, made a habbit of killing giants and trolls.
Anyway, what do you mean I'm making it bigger than it is?

I was thinking something along the line of, you take the Valkyries from mythology and the trolls from folklore. The troll in folklore can be more or less like human but with minor differences of course. And with this setting they don't need to be enemies of the Valkyries. And hey if gods like Thor and Odin can live with giants(Loki) then I'm sure Valkyries and Einherjars can work just fine with Trolls and giants.

Like I said: Come up with a good storyline and I wouldn't even mind seeing Unicorns being best pals with Nightmares. Well, I would... But you catch my drift!
DarkLord pointed out that Rakshasas in mythology are evil spirits. Though I knew it ofcourse, I never made the connection, because of that one little paragraph that's their description that gave them their own identity in Ashan.
